Pros: Price Cons: Poor quality
I bought this Coby DVD player a few years ago. Actually,it was my first DVD player. For the longest time, I couldn't understand why everyone loved DVD's so much. Their picture quality was horrible, the sound wasn't great, and even brand new DVD's would ...

Pros: Size, price, Format supported, remote Cons: audio and video quality just not there
I bought this on an impulse, sort of. I had been looking for a DVD player for some time now. In my old system I used a 1991 sony CD player for audio and a PS2 for my DVD's. both of these had flaws. The sony would skip if you played music loud enough ...

Worthless Machine
by beevyarr ,Jun 04 '06
Pros: None. It is only cheap so they can sell off a bad product. Cons: Not durable. Not long-lasting. Not worth it.
OK, so of course this thing is inexpensive, which I believe the technology of Digital Media Players should be by now, but the thing lasted exactly as long as it's 90 day warranty. After viewing maybe 12 times in that period, now every disc I insert only gives a "DISC ERROR" message. Makes me wonder why their warranty is only 90 on their DVD Players to begin with, but 1 year on most other COBY Merchandise.
Also, an issue with this same model # that a friend related to me was flaky playback of home-mastered DVD-R/+R discs. He put his right into the trash can.
Don't buy it. Save your money up for another week to get a better product. My first ever DVD Player was a Sharp at $100 that lasted 4 years as DVD & CD Player of a college household. Lots of use & abuse.

Coby 514M a piece of garbage-Beware of this machine
by solitarysherlo ,Jul 22 '07
Pros: Cheap piece of junk--which worked long enough for the 90 warranty to expire-- Cons: Dies fast. After the warranty, but costs too much to even consider fixing.
Bought it cause it was cheap, dumping it in the garbage because it is cheap and became possessed within months by a devil--that plays different tracks on DVDs with extra tracks. So when you are trying to watch a movie, you get director's commentary blah-blah-blahing throughout. Not even worth giving to Goodwill. Doesn't even sell on Ebay for a penny. Don't waste you time or money on this gizmo, even for a child.

Dead out of the box.
by medana17 ,Nov 20 '05
Pros: Looks, features, slim and compact design. Cons: Dead out of the box.
I bought this DVD player because it had good features and played DVD+/-R/RW discs. The price was also right ($39.99) and it looked nice and stylish on the picture. Well, after I connected everything and put batteries into remote, I was up for nice surprise. This remote control did not work at all. Either remote itself was dead or the unit was not responding to it. Manual buttons on the player worked fine but there is no point to have a unit without remote control. I do regret my decision to make a purchase based on price (and some nice features). For sure will never buy anything made by COBY again.

Good Product and Great Price
by jcorque ,Nov 29 '05
Pros: Progressive scan, optical and coaxial outputs, easy to use setup guide Cons: connections are too close together and a bit confusing
I purchased this item because of it's features and price. I was amazed at the picture and sound quality. It played computer generated DVDs flawlessly.

Coby 514 does the job...
by twistnrev ,Jun 19 '09
Pros: Compact region free play ability. Runs cool. Remote control, cable, and guide provided. Low price. Cons: Two BRIGHT front lights. The unit itself has a (low) buzz/grind noise when playing.
I purchased the Coby 514 (TheNerds.net) and am satisfied with the performance. I plugged the provided audio/video cable into my Sharp 32" TV and installed the remote control batteries (provided)and was ready to go. The provided guide book goes over all of the DVD players functions.
The first disc I tried was a concert DVD (pal 0) from Finland. It loaded and played beautifully with good sound and very nice quality on close up images. The second disc I tried was a mpeg disc (burned from the internet). It showed a clear menu of contents and played very well.
