Pros: great variety, decent dessert presentation Cons: long lines, sporadic and occasional rude service, tables close together.
What is it?
Cafe Lalo, a well known spot to many on the Upper West Side, was made even more popular because it was the meeting place for Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in the movie "You've Got Mail". Like many cafe's in NYC, Cafe Lalo has a...
Pros: so many choices of desserts Cons: lines, tight seating
Café Lalo is one of the only true cafes on the Upper West Side. Their selection of cakes, pies and tarts is mind boggling. Last time I counted, they had 34 cakes by the slice, 12 pies by the slice, 9 tarts by the slice and about 8 different types of...
Pros: Excellent baked goods and varied menu Cons: Long waits, tight seating during peak hours
Cafe Lalo is beyond compare on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. The menu is European influenced as are the surroundings. Exposed brick, soft lighting (not dim!), large french windows opened in late spring to early fall; all add to the ambiance.
Pros: huge selection of wonderful pies & cakes Cons: lines, lines, lines and crowded seating
If you live on the Upper West Side you have definitely decided on more than one summer Saturday night that the pies in Cafe Lalo are still worth the ridiculous lines. (For winter dining - they deliver too!)

Pros: Fantastic desserts and atmosphere Cons: All the way uptown, fair service
I'm a big fan of downtown, and don't like going above 25th Street. But I'm always easily convinced to hike all the way up to the Upper West Side if you mention Cafe Lalo.
I love to travel to Europe, and one of the things I miss most about...
The worst cafe in Manhattan by jbeswick ,Nov 15 '04
Pros: The power of movie folklore Cons: Service, food, value-for-money - oh, and no credit cards.
Average food is matched by truly appalling service at this Upper West Side cafe that can only have overcome its mediocrity by clinging onto it "You've Got Mail" reputation with unsuspecting tourists. Expect a line, a 45 minute wait for a menu, about the same for some overpriced salad, served by clueless waitstaff with bad attitudes. If only the real Cafe Lalo experience had been in the movie, I'm not sure than Tom and Meg would have got passed a cappuccino.
Strange??? I am not sure why people would return here..... by asti99 ,Mar 31 '04
Pros: The capachino's Cons: Just about everything else.........
Well I have to say I was being a tourist and wanted to see the site for the You've got mail location. We went on a Sunday around 10:30pm. There was no lines and we were seated right away. The place was packed the seating arrangement was a joke. If I wanted to sit that close to strangers I would go to a subway during rush hour and try and have a intimate cup of coffee and a dessert. The service was border line rude. The dessert was average I had carrot cake and my friend had a raspberry chocalate thing that she really did not like. What we both did like was our capachinos they were fantastic. One of the best I have ever had. The place so was so noisy we could only stay about twenty minutes and we wanted out. I can say I will not be visiting this place again any time soon.
