Pros: No BHA/BHT Cons: Easy to chew for small dogs, high quality food
This is a great food. I have my 9 year old dog on Canidae and he is doing great on it. I used to have him on another brand and he had chronic skin infections. Ever since he has been on Canidae, he hasn't had one problem. Great food. I plan on switching him over to the canned food when he gets older and has trouble chewing.
My Carin Terrier Wouldn't Touch It! by bckysar ,May 05 '07
Pros: Great ingredients! Cons: My dog doesn't like the taste!
I tried this food after one of my friends swore by it. My little Newman wouldn't eat a bite! I tried all the different flavors, still wasn't to thrilled at meal time. Then I had him trained by a professional trainer and she suggested Innova. She said that Canidae is a great dog food with all the best ingredients, but she feeds Innova to her german shepards and they love it. So I tried it and Newman loves it! The best part is that now he only has one stool a day compared to three on Canidae! Not a huge deal to me but a nice bonus! We will be sticking with Innova.
Pros: A healthy food that dogs love Cons: Can be hard to find
One of the rare dog foods that is made from ingredients that humans would eat.
Our local shelter only uses Canidae because of the success that they have had using it with all dogs.
Our dog never seems to suffer from any upset stomach issues, and the vet always raves about how good her coat looks. And...our dog loves this food!
I've also found that the serious dog people that I know (those that compete with their dogs, and are way serious in to the smallest health details), list Canidae as one of only 2 or 3 dog foods that they would even consider giving their pet.
The only downside is that it can be hard to find. Others have listed the cost as a con, but you'll find that you need to feed less Canidae than other brands (since it is all food, no fillers), so the cost evens itself out (and you'll have less to clean up in the yard!
Pros: Healthy, No carcinogens, Good for certain food sensitivities. Cons: Costly.
This food has become a blessing. My older dog has always had a sensitive stomach and used to frequently goes through bouts of vomiting or diarrhea. With a month of switching to Canidae, that changed. He no longer seems to have an irritated stomach, no more vomiting or diarrhea. Both my dogs have great soft & extremely shiny coats now also. They've always had good coats, but never this shiny before.
Pros: Quality nutrition Cons: Not available in local stores, must order online
I sent my cousin's dog a few bags of Canidae as a gift. She reports that her little dog who weighed 40 lbs but should weigh about 25 has lost a significant amount of weight since being on the Canidae. Her dog also had chronic loose stools/diarrhea. She also reports that now her dog has normal formed stools.
Pros: Dogs love the taste, humans love the nutritional value! Cons: A bit difficult to find, but increasing popularity will hopefully increase stores that sell.
For a dog that will eat almost anything, Canidae had a way of really getting my dog's attention! I was visiting a new local pet store to buy my dog some new toys and treats, and an employee approached me about the type of food my dog eats, which at the time was Science Diet. He asked if I would like some samples of Canidae and I quickly accepted even though I was not looking for a new type of dog food. Now, I have a chocolate lab who at the time was 2 and very active (and very excitable when in a pet store surrounded by all sorts of toys and treats.) The second the store employee returned with the food samples my dog stopped in his tracks and stared at this bag of food. I was in awe!!! I couldn't believe how focused he was on this food. At home I gave him the samples and ever since he devoured it, absolutely loved it! I have been feeding him the Canidae ever since and to this day he still can't get enough of this great food!

Pros: Great Food with superb ingredients! Cons: Not sold in enough places. =)
We have had our 4 mo. old chocolate lab on Canidae for just over a month now and he is doing great! We get sooo many compliments on his shiny coat and calm temperment. I think Canidae is very comparable to Innova. They are about the same cost wise in the long run, as Innova is a little bit more dense per cup. If your dog agrees with Canidae, have no regrets feeding it!
