Pros: Good image quality. Lots of included software. Lots of advanced options. Relatively fast. Cons: Included software for Mac out of date. CCD not quite 48-bit, but close.
I was looking through an old bag of 35 mm photo sets and the though came to me that I should archive these old family photos. How best to do this? Most of the photo envelopes had all the original 35 mm print film negatives. Some only had the ...
Pros: Quick, quiet and easy to use. Great results, excellent software. Very versatile. Cons: Size, takes up a big footprint compared to my old film scanner. Glass collects dust.

I just received my Canon 8600F film scanner from Amazon.com and now my collection of B&W negatives can be digitized and put to use with my iMac G5.
So far I am very pleased with the results. The previous review that states that
negatives can not be digitized is now in error. Numerous sites have given this model good reviews, and I do also. The price is right and all is good so far.
Pros: it's shiny Cons: very poor film scanning, poor software, poor print scanning
[UPDATE] This scanner does an exceptionally poor job scanning film. I am astonished this was allowed to hit the market. Canons Canoscan software doesn't even have a film option. To scan film you have to go through a graphics program then select [File] > [Acquire]. Even at the highest resolution film scanning doesn't make a good 3.5 x 5 print and this is from a 300MB file made from a 6 X 4.5 negative. The 35mm is even worse. Also this will NOT scan all 120 film! For 6x4.5 it will only scan every other frame because it is looking for a 6x6.
What I did was take a 120 negative and a print I already had. Scanned the negative and then the print, then compare them to the original print. Very poor, very unhappy. I figured maybe scanning the print would be better. No.
If you are looking for a scanner to transfer you negatives online, this does a horrible job. If you are looking to transfer pictures online, this does a very poor job. That's my opinion.
