At 8Mp and low noise this camera performs right at to just below maximum resolution of most Canon L series lens. At 1800 to 1900 LW/PH you need excellent glass to take full advantage of the sensor/processor. Used with a F2.8 lens the viewfinder is bright and focusing crisp. I see no reason to wait for the next generation of this series camera. Buy it now if you need it now. Skip the kit lens and buy nothing slower than F4.0. The 580EX and 420EX flashes work extremely well as master/ slave for portraits and weddings with the 30D. The sync speed up to 250/sec is very useful in fill flash situations. The larger 2.5" LCD screen is a pleasure to use... the 10x zoom feature allows confirmation of focus. I love the pop up flash when just taking snaps at parties or Holidays. Pick up the cheaper Canons and Nikons SLRs and you immediately feel the superiority of the 30D. I see no reason not to use this camera for the next 8 to 10 years like I have with my Canon EOS film cameras.

I love this camera I will never own another camera , if youa re a beginner or advanced it is great I love the pictures it takes and I love the speed . its just the best camera I have ever owned

This lens has some faults but with any super zoom give and take is the name of the game. My only complaint is the vignetting but it is easy to correct in PSE-5 or NX.

Oh this lens is not soft it is very sharp, sharper than most lens out there. Again if vignetting is not something you want to post out of sky and light pictures you may consider something else.

I purchased this camera online in May. Overall the camera fully meets my expectations, it's a little heavy - I knew it would be, its a little bulky - I knew it would be. My experience using the camera has been overall very positive.

However, I noticed an imprefection in my photo's, that was VERY noticeable at small arpeture settings. I troubleshoot it to something on the sensor - looked like a smudge of some kind. I returned it to Canon service - very quick turnaround, BUT it cost $30 for me to ship it back, and they chastised me that this would be 'courtesy' cleaning.

Since the camera was 'dirty' out of the box, I did not appreciate any of this. The Internet is full of warnings not to clean the sensor with anything but air, so I did not want to void my warrantee - feel kind of like a Catch22 here.
