Canon PowerShot Digital Elph SD1000 7.1-Megapixel Compact Digital Camera

by dkozin dkozin is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, May 11 '07
Pros: Size, looks, weight, large screen, fast operation, pleasing photos, price
Cons: No manual control over aperture or shutter speed, no optical image stabilization
Since I have always liked Canon Digital Elph cameras (e.g. 6 -Megapixel SD600 and the 7 .1-Megapixel SD800 IS), I had to see how good the new Canon SD1000 is. The SD1000 is a ...

Canon PowerShot Digital Elph SD1000: Another Excellent Elph

by noangels Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jun 11 '08
Pros: Excellent picture quality, great price, lots of features, large screen, ultra compact, great battery life
Cons: Little bit of lag with flash, could use image stabilization for low-light zoomed pictures
I have noticed a pattern in the purchasing of electronics in my household. It can only be described by the cliche "when it rains, it pours." My fiance and I will go for periods of several months without making any electronics purchases, only to follow it ...

The Canon PowerShot SD1000, the Best of its Class

Yet another SD in the family

by Ames100 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Dec 16 '07
Pros: Ultra-compact, takes decent shots under most circumstances, easy to use, flexible
Cons: Shutter lag in flash mode, sensor has limited dynamic range, fixed aperture lens
The 7-megapixel SD1000 is the least expensive model in the current generation of Canon’s popular ultra-compact Elph (Ixus in Europe) digital cameras. Our family already has two cameras in this model line purchased over the last couple of years (an ...

Small, but sweet

by Spiderider , Jan 27 '09
Pros: Fits in shirt pocket. Good battery life.
Cons: Prone to lens damage. Not a very durable lens mechanism.
I bought the SD 1000 because I wanted a small point and shoot with good resolution, and enough versatility to meet various needs when carrying it around.  I got it all in this camera. The body is literally smaller than a cigarette pack, has ...

Flawed with no support. Keep looking.

by jlockley , Nov 08 '07
Pros: Small, fast, cute as a bug's ear. Good lcd.
Cons: Flawed circuitry or lens gears render camera useless. Canon does not honor in warranty.
The SD 1000 is a sweet little camera with a less than intuitive interface and fatal flaws in lens synchronization, which Canon refuses to honor in warranty. Don't buy it. With just over a year with the Canon SD 1000, moderate use and good care, the ...

Cons: Dust Halo problems with flash photography, no battery indicator.

Very good & good value too!
by ht39 ,Jun 10 '07
Pros: Small, fast turn-on, easy to use, most default settings fine.
Cons: Making manual adjustments to exposure difficult
One of the smallest ultracompacts available in US now (May/June 2007); very good value.

Very easy to use (purchased as gift for spouse). I really like the fact that it still has an optical viewfinder (useful in bright outdoor settings).

Most of the default settings or automatic settings are quite good. Changing some of the settings are not quite as intuitive as one would like (cycling flash options, for example--turning red-eye on/off is from the tools menu, rather than just cycling the flash button).

Turns on/off pretty quickly (on the order of 1 second or so).

Battery life also appears excellent.

The Canon Powershot SD1000, The best digital camera ever!
by bulbusass ,Feb 09 '08
Pros: Compact camera size with large lcd screen, Incredible battery life.
Cons: Can't think of any.
My wife and I bought this camera right before our wedding. This is our 8th digital camera. Before purchasing I assumed that all digital camera's eat battery's after about 20-50 pictures taken. I was always so disappointed with digital camera's until we bought the SD1000. We took almost 350 pictures at our wedding before it warned us of low battery. The pictures turned out great, the price was fantastic, the rechargeable lithium battery lasts forever, the speed of the camera is better than I have ever seen and the size of the camera is ideal. I will never buy any other camera brand then Canon.

Pros: compact, easy, decent tools
Cons: short battery life, sub-par zoom
This camera works great for basic usage. It's compact and portable. It's easy to use - perfect for point and shoot photography.

The battery life is short, so I always carry 1-2 spare batteries with me. The zoom is not stellar, which is expected.

I especially like using the timer tool and color swap.

My second Canon in a row!
by gladtohelpu ,Feb 18 '08
Pros: Portable, good LCD display, using the basics is easy
Cons: Zoom not that great, challenging to take low light photos
After owning a Canon PowerShot 3.2 mega pixel camera for several years, my wife and I decided to upgrade to a smaller, more powerful camera. We found a great deal at an office supplies store (that I would rather not name due to their continued poor service) and purchased the SD1000 Digital Elph for $149 in November 2007 during a Black Friday sale. After purchasing my first Canon maybe just 5 years ago at more than twice the price (and that was a good deal back then), I could not believe the quality that this camera provided. It is powerful at 7.1 mega pixels and, more importantly to us, very compact, taking up less than half the space we had with our old camera. The menus took some getting used to, but the large display is great, and shooting and downloading pictures is easier than before. I did discover a few challenges taking photos with poor lighting that I had not experienced with my old camera, but found settings to combat that (a little inconvenient though). I have not tried the movie feature yet, but I have a camcorder for that anyways.

Canon SD1000 Digital Elph 7.1 megapixels
by kirbag ,Feb 26 '09
Pros: Compact size, cool features, great action shots
Cons: Flash is a little slow, screen is smaller than I would like
I got this camera for Christmas last year and started playing around with it immediately.  There are some really cool features on it such as Color Accent where you can pick a color that you want to show up and everything else in the picture is black and white.  The pictures look awesome!  One thing I really don't like about it is that it is nearly impossible to take a picture without the flash on.  The pictures always come out blurry.

The best small camera
by jkrishnan ,Sep 27 '07
Pros: cant make a better body. the looks. 2.5 inch screen in such compact space
Cons: battery good, but panasonic fx01 was better, the (picture quality of fx01 was pathetic)
Used it for about a week now. I have used more bulkier canons and sonys, and have decided that everywhere carryability is more important than some extra manual features. Ixus 70 has a lot of manual features, though. The picture is very good. I compared with my sony w1, which is also a fantastic camera. But pics of ixus is more correctly coloured, whereas sony tends to be a bit sweet - like dressing up. No dont get me wrong its a minor feeling. sony is also very good. Ixus 70 is the best.

Extremely Disappointed
by ga_opinion ,Aug 15 '07
Pros: Compact. Sleek. Easy to use.
Cons: TERRIBLE TERRIBLE PHOTO QUALITY unless you are under full sun.
Got an excellent service from S-410 for over 2 years. Then i dropped it and broke its LCD. Hence i started looking for a digital camera. It had to be CANON since it gives best photo quality. I looked at my options and like SD1000 although i did see some people complaining about its picture quality. Well, i have had the camera for over a month now... guess what.... CANON let me down. Something about this model, it is terrible. Unless you are taking picture in the beach under full sun, you will NOT get quality. Your WILL get dithered.

Great Quality for a Reasonable Price
by mattswardson5 ,Feb 20 '08
Pros: amazingly clear pictures; lightweight and VERY DURABLE; neat adjustments; simple layout of menus and options.
Cons: Some adjustments (color accents and color swaps) aren't available with flash.
After using several digital cameras, I've finally found the one I'd like to say I'll keep forever. I've used Kodak, Sony, and another Canon that I didn't feel were appropriate for my level of experience and knowledge. The PowerShot is perfect for both the average user (like myself) as well as advanced users (like my wife) who know what most of those buttons do! The one feature that really sold me was the ability to take pictures with color accents and color replacements. For instance, if you wanted to take a picture with only one color visible and the rest grey-washed, all it takes is two pushes of a button to adjust the camera to do so. If an average user like myself can manage that, anyone could!

Pretty good
by augustdc ,Jul 02 '07
Pros: Great picture quality; lots of controls; large screen; optical view-finder; included SD card.
Cons: SD card is only 32 MB; some darkened edges or purple fringing
The camera is sleek, fits nicely in my small hand, has simple controls and does exactly what is expected. However, every professional review I read spoke about purple fringing and this is definitely the case.

While the effects of the purple fringing can be reduced by limiting the use of the Flash, if you're thinking about taking pictures for anything more than just personal use, the darkened edges are noticeable.

Great Camera
by tampagirl10 ,Dec 27 '07
Pros: Everything
Cons: None
I brought this camera for our family for Christmas. Our 1st digital camera. I had a 35mm Nikon 1000 which was 20 years old but a little to heavy to carry around. This camera takes great clear crisp pictures. A lot of functions for the price. What is nice there are two guides one for basic operation and one for advanced. So far we love this camera. My 16 year old can even operate with no problem and my husband who is not electronically incline can shoot pictures with it.

My son figured it out by the simple pictures on it.

Neat but flawed with lens error
by andyp42 ,Jun 14 '08
Pros: Small, great pic's large viewfinder
Cons: "Lens Error" rendered camera inoperable
Plus: A lovely little camera, takes great pics, recommended by Which? magazine BUT it seems to have a design flaw. After a few weeks it started giving intermittent "Lens Error. Restart camera " messages. Then after another week or two it permanently gave the message, rendering the camera useless.

Love this camera
by bernie157 ,Feb 19 '08
Pros: Compact, great pictures, many features, has a viewfinder (many do not), great battery life.
Cons: Menus, functions more complicated than I would prefer.
I bought this to replace a Canon A520 which was REALLY SLOW to get ready for the next shot whether using flash or not. Uses proprietary battery rather than AAs like other Canons but so far so good. I set it to several notches lower than the default 7.1 megapixels and that is good enough for me. Also got it at a great price.

Canon PowerShot SD1000 - thumbs up
by becks5269 ,Mar 24 '08
Pros: Great point-and-shoot camera, great macro shots, clear photography, good for family photography
Cons: Images have tendency to be blurry, shutter speed (esp w/ flash) is not optimal
I was given this camera for Christmas and it was one of the best gifts I've ever received! I am NOT a hardcore photographer, but rather just wanted a quality point-and-shoot for pics of family and friends. The SD1000 has done the trick and then some!

I am obsessed with the macro setting - it does a great job of shooting your macro pics. I find that many of my black and whites come out blurry, but thus is the nature of b/w.

The size is handy - fits in my purse and I take it everywhere I go. I previously had a very large Fuji digital camera that was hard to carry around and was more for true photographers, not a simple family gal.

The camera has a bunch of neat features and functions that a non-professional photographer can play around with to get more high-quality photographs. All-in-all, a fantastic camera!
