Pros: 3.2 Megapixels, ultra compact, Improved Control Layout, tough metal body
Cons: Poor low-light performance, poor battery life, weak flash, poor software.
The first micro digital camera I ever used was the nifty little Canon S10, which I really liked. Since the S10 Ive used every one of Canon's digital elphs except the S330. I was really excited when I heard that Canon was updating my favorite elph,...
Pros: Small Size, 3.2 MegaPixels!, metal body, minor tweaks from S200 Cons: 2x Optical Zoom, Weak Flash, So-So Battery Life
It's only been a few months since the release of the S200 and S330 cameras... Nikon also began to offersome serious competition with the CoolPiz 3500 and the other companies released several models to battle in the mid-range and portable market. Heck,...

WHY I PURCHASED THE POWERSHOT 230:

Pros: Picture Quality, Small size, Versatility Cons: Price
Christmas 2001, I acquired a Nikon F65 (N65 in the US), which is a great SLR, even though I dropped it down a steep, rocky hillside and had to get $200 worth of repairs. However, I often go biking or walking around my house where carrying a camera as ...
Pros: Small Size, 3.2 megapixels, Metal body, AiAF focus system, CF memory, user friendly. Cons: Only a 2X optical zoom.
This camera is perfect for general consumer use with many advanced functions, which most people will never use, but are nice to have. Right out of the box I noticed that it was exactly the same size as the S100. The buttons on the back were rearranged...
Pros: Smallest 3MP camera on the market; loaded with features; great picture quality! Cons: Red-eye issues; more zoom would be nice.
With the release of the Powershot S230, Canon finally introduces a 3-megapixel camera to their popular "Digital Elph" line. The biggest draw for Canon's entire Elph series, of course, has always been the small and attractive stainless steel body which...
Pros: Compact, Lightweight, Takes great photos in daylight Cons: Weak flash, poor battery life
The Canon Elph S230 is a small, solid point-&-shoot digital camera that is for you if you're looking to take photos without any hassle. It's the first camera in that size from Canon to sport a 3.2 megapixel CCD, enough to print reasonable quality 8x10...
Pros: Small size, movie mode, great auto-focus, 3.2 megapixels Cons: Weak flash, very slow response when using redeye reduction
I've had an Elph2 APS camera for years, so when I decided to go digital, the Digital Elph line was a logical choice. I looked at the offerings from Sony, Minolta, and others, before deciding on the S230.
Pros: small, cost efficient, good photos, easy access to computer Cons: battery life after taking a video
This was my first digital camera. I was looking for a small camera that could just take snapshots to record the moment with my friends, and this camera did just that. It's not a very complex camera. It's easy to use, fairly priced, compact, and has easy ...
Pros: Small, compact size; takes great pictures; Canon quality; good flash; sleek design Cons: A little heavy
I've had great experiences with Canons, so naturally, when it came time to buy myself a digital camera, that's where I looked. I wanted a small camera, something that would fit in my small purse, so that I could take it anywhere and take pictures...
Pros: Small and compact, the proof is in the pictures Cons: Mine didn't come with case, but that's the only complaint
First off, I know precious little about photography. If you're looking to read about specs and the nuances of digital photography, read the reviews from people who know what they're talking about. All I know is that this camera is durable, easy to use a ...
Pros: Great Picture Quality, 3.2 MegaPixels, Real small. Fits anywhere. Cons: Takes a while to learn all the features well.
This is my first digital camera I ever used, and I really love it. I think the fact that it has a stainless steel body makes it look really great, and not only that, but it makes it durable.
Pros: Small size, easy to use, great pictures, battery charger, stylish Cons: Limited optical zoom
I recently purchased this camera (my first digital camera) and I have been very impressed so far. The camera itself looks great. The stainless steel frame is very sturdy. After you have held this camera, all others will seem like cheap plastic toys....
Pros: Size, solid/sexy build. Point&Shoot manual mode. Very extensive manual advanced user mode Cons: Navigation through commands are confusing and the instruction manual sucks. Read it anyway and practice.
Ok, get yourself a pair of Dockers geek pocket pants and this camera is going with you anywhere you please. I personally love the lens cover on auto-close; I know this way, the lens is protected while in my pocket. The new batteries are 840mah but if...
Pros: Very good build quality and feel. Relatively easy-to-use and robust. Cons: Battery life seems to vary between good and merely adequate.
For objects 6 inches or greater in distance, the S230 does an amazing job in its ability to take crisp, clear images. I have had very little problem with the auto-focus. Due to its size, I have found it very convenient to carry in a variety of places....
Pros: Size, Picture Quality, Looks and Style Cons: CF Card it shipped with... BOO
This camera rocks and rocks well! I've had it since the day Canon released it. It's compact size and light weight make it perfect for those vacations when you pack the world for travel.
I really like the ease of use between the flash modes....
Pros: Size, 3.2mp, W/B Histogram, Ease of Use Cons: No Case, Somewhat Pricy
After 3 years I finally decided to go digital and bought myself the Canon Elph s230 3.2 Mega Pixels camera. Being a college student, I chose the s230 for its size and picture resolution. What can I say when your having fun, it is always good to...
Pros: Size, ease of use. Cons: Not that great for action shots.
This camera rocks! I've had it for about a month. It's tiny, light, and really simple to use. It's so great to be able to toggle through flash modes, white balance, and shooting modes (single, burst, timer) with dedicated buttons on the back panel....
Pros: Can keep in pocket. Takes great pictures. Cons: Complicated advanced controls.
I really like this camera! Originally, I was looking at a much bigger camera (one from the Nikon Coolpix line), but, after a recent trip to Europe, I realized that my friend with a digital Elph took the most (and best) pictures.
Pros: Great quality pictures (8X11 pictures), decent price, Amazing size, Sturdy build Cons: weak flash, no speaker for video playback, slightly costly, can't take pictures in rapid succession.
THe design is beautiful and the camera's pictures are just as beautiful. It takes about 80 pictures on the highest quality and size pictures when using a 128mb Flashcard (about $25 definatly don't spend more than $30). Video is great to watch and ...
Pros: Small, Tough, Power Efficient, Not Complicated, quality images.
Cons: proprietary battery, shutter lag
This is a very durable yet compact camera. It fits in my pocket easily and has a stainless steel case that seems to be very tough. I took it to the grand canyon along with my Olympus C700 with the 10x optical zoom and the cannon had the truer color ca ...
Pros: Good image & color replication, 3.2 Megapixels, Small size, Up to 15sec. exposure times, Cons: Bad metering, Must be in manual to force flash on, 3.2 Megapixels eat up memory.
First of all let me say I really like this camera. I bought it to replace my year old Elph S-300 with a 3 megapixel camera. Overall I like the performance but there are some problems that I have experienced that did not exist with the old camera....
Pros: Very Compact, excellent picture quality, extended movie time over S200 Cons: Poor battery life when using display, only 2X optical zoom
I picked up this camera last week at Best Buy. What a huge difference from my Kodak DC210. I have a friend who purchased a S200 last year and raved about it. When I heard the 230 was being released, I waited! Well worth the wait. It's so compact, I...
Pros: Takes up to 3 minute Movies! Manual functions, small & elegant, fast Cons: No USB 2.0, 2X Zoom
This camera can take movies up to 3 minutes long in 320x240 format and 30 seconds in high res 640x480 format with sound. Most other cameras only take 15 to 30 second movies. With a 1 GB card in it you could probably take 1/2 hour of video and put the...
Pros: - Small, lightweight
- Great battery, quick recharge
Cons: None for me
The First Camera
I first bought a 3.0 Megapixel camera from CompUSA, and spent about $200 on it. It was not a name brand, but I figured I was getting a 3.0 MP camera, for $100 less than most other brands. I'm a computer geek, and I don't...
Pros: Unbelieveably small and compact, yet a great camera. Cons: None
When shopping for digital cameras, I first purchased a Cannon G3. This camera had amazing quality, yet was very pricey. I returned this camera becasue the cost was not worth it for the quality. However I still was looking for a digital camera to take on...
Pros: Small elph size. Fine photos. Easy to use. Many, many options. Cons: Red Eye with flash.
Excellent Camera I have owned for about 6 months. Small enough for me to carry it in my brief case and use. I find battery lasts about a day in normal use and holds charge for over a month when not used much. Buy an extra. You will need a 256K...
Pros: Compact, Lightweight, and Feature-Filled. Cons: The zoom is not as powerful as the rest of the camera's features.
I purchased this camera a couple months ago for general home and business use. I must say that doing all the research that I did before buying was time well spent as I am very happy with my purchase.
Pros: Small, Good quality build, Great CCD !Worth the buy ! Cons: No battery status indicator, Shutter lag ( ALL average digital cameras have it )#!%$!
As some people are aware it's the quality of the ccd that counts MORE than the Megapixel count. This is exactly the case with the Canon s230 3.2 Megapixel. Does better than my kodak 4 Mega ( Much better actually). Has alot of manual settings for this...
Pros: Battery life, ease of use, size Cons: Does not zoom in as far as most people may like
I received this digital camera as a graduation gift a few months ago. I received it early to catch some of those memorable moments on film of the preceding weeks. First of all, I was very impressed with the size. The size of this camera is perfect - ...
Pros: Size (Small as a pack of cigs), 3.2 mpix, metal body. Cons: Small battery, red-eye
I bought my S230 from best buy with a free gift card i won from a Best Buy contest. This was my first digital camera and at the time I did not even own a computer. With my free $500 card, I bought the camera, and two 128mb cards.
Pros: excellent movie capture, compact, great pictures, easy to use, great lcd display Cons: get good at red eye touchup but this is the ONLY con
I am looking for things to shoot! This is the funnest thing I've bought in a very long time. The picture clarity is second to none. Pay the extra price and go with this camera. It is a little more expensive for 3.2 megapixels but it is WORTH IT. It...
Pros: Small size, rugged construction, movie feature, Lithium Ion battery/charger included, price/performance ratio. Cons: 2x optical zoom. Limited storage on std memory card.
I looked around a year for a camera that fit my needs. I wanted a small one, 3mp or more, rechargeable batt, reasonably fast shutter response, under $300. I tried another product and returned it due to a really slow shutter response. I travel a lot so ...
Pros: small Cons: long lag time, poor focus, poor flash
We bought this camera to replace my old Kodak digital camera. It was smaller and lighter but the camera has a hard time focusing. It sometimes focuses on nothing at all. Even the focused pictures appear blurry compared to other cameras. It also has a long lag time which is bad for taking pics of the kids. It also has a really weak flash and you have to be standing at most 3 feet away to get a decent shot. After being a Cannon Rebel XT fan, I feel that this Cannon product will make me think twice before buying another one.
Canon PowerShot S230 Digital ELPH by yanivdll ,Dec 18 '04
Pros: Good photo quality in most situations
Super fast performance
Good battery life Cons: Major redeye problems
Wish it had a 3X zoom lens
The S230 isn't just a higher resolution ELPH -- it also incorporates the new DIGIC image processor and iSAPS technology, also found in the more expensive PowerShot G3.
The DIGIC processor improves performance and photo quality. iSAPS stands for Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space. The system is a database of photographic data, which has been accumulated by Canon over the last 60 years. When you press the shutter release button halfway, the camera compares the current scene to the scenes in the database, and choose the best settings for that situation.
Since the first ELPHs appeared a few years ago, a lot of competition has cropped up. How well does this latest ELPH hold up against the crowd? Find out now!
The S230 is known as the Digital Ixus V3 in some countries.
Pros: compact, easy to use, good quality Cons: expensive, battery may not last long
Its good to browse around before buying a digital camera. So what if it's a little costly? See it as an investment. Its better than buying a cheap one and having to replace it a year or two later.
This camera have been in my since the first day I bought it. Its fun and easy to use plus of course the picture quality is awesome. The video quality is just as good but the sound quality i shall give it 3 out of 4 stars.
It has options for you whether you would prefer auto or manual. For manual there's black & white, sepia and other effects for you to choose from for photo enhancements.
Oh, did I mention this camera does fit in my pants pocket? Its a little heavy but its alright cos its made with durable parts and the metallic exterior protects your camera from damages.
It Keeps Getting Better by rushjohnson ,Jan 22 '04
Pros: Sleek, high-quality, easy to use, very portable Cons: None -- its a keeper!
After years of swearing that I would not succumb to the pressures of digital photography, I did the next best thing -- I bought my wife one of these for her birthday. I must say that I am more than impressed.
First, the camera is extremely well constructed -- no cheap feeling about this device at all. This is the kind of camera that you can take with you just about everywhere that you go without feeling bogged down.
The pictures are outstanding, and the ability to manually adjust everything from light temperature to shutter speed etc is impressive. Get an upgraded memory card and you can take a whole bunch of pictures without having to download what is in the camera.
Although I would not rate this camera top as a professional grade camera, it is a top rated camera for the average family photographer.
Very few flaws in this awesome compact digital camera by wuzandrade ,Jan 06 '04
Pros: Small. Good battery life. Excellent picture quality indoors and outdoors. Cons: USB interface can be difficult. Mac software has connection quirks.
This camera is worth the $. Paid $270 for a brand new one. Picture quality is great. Features are fairly easy to use. Love the automatic lens cover and lens retraction on power down. Do cover the LCD screen with a piece of plastic film (I cut a piece from one of those clear report binders). Make sure you have two batteries to use with the external battery charger for uninterrupted picture taking. I am getting at least 50 pictures total over 5 - 10 different "events" before needing to charge the battery with the LCD screen on. I suspect this would translate into 100+ pictures for a single event.
MINOR annoyances:
1. Delay between pressing the take picture button and the time when the picture is taken is a little long.
2. USB interface has a connector that is somewhat difficult for older, less electronic minded individuals to use - a dock connector would be better.
3. The macintosh version of the software used to download the pictures does not always connect on the first or second try. (no problems after connecting).
4. Editing features of included software are kind of weak.
This is my second digital camera to own and I am very impressed by the quality of the photos it produces. My previous camera was an old model Olympus and the pictures were slightly pixelated and fuzzy - not so with this camera and it's much more compact too! Great to throw in your bag and have on hand just in case, probably not the best option for someone taking very detailed, artistic photos because the zoom isn't great. For general use, I highly recommend it. Some users complained about the battery life, but I'm impressed with that too. I rarely charge my battery and it never dies unexpectedly. My old camera ran on AA batteries, so this is a much better option. Red eyes show in some light, but not in all photos.
Pros: -Lots of features
-Good for the money
-Quality pictures
-640x480 movie mode Cons: -Sometimes red eye becomes a problem
-Battery life could be better
After shopping around and looking at several cameras, I came to the conclusion that this is the best buy for the money. Sure there are better cameras out there, but do you really need 5 mega pixels? I didn't think so. The features on this camera are amazing and easy to use. I would recommend this to anyone.
Great Camera, but lens device breaks easily! by demkatie ,Nov 06 '04
Pros: Ease of use, great picture quality, size, movies! Cons: Breaks easily, beware! Short battery life.
I loved this camera. It was perfect - could fit easily in a shirt pocket or purse, took short movies... Others were so impressed that 4 other people bought one after seeing ours. Alas, our lens device broke after a year and a half. Apparently, this 'E18' message is a common problem - lint in the lens device which renders the camera useless unless professionally fixed at rates where you are better off buying a new camera. I'm not sure if I will be buying another Elph....
Excellent camera to carry around all the time by snowman1090 ,Sep 22 '03
Pros: Small size, excellent pictures, plenty of features for point and shoot Cons: Heavy, comes with 16mb Compactflash
I have been using this camera for about 7 months now. I usually bring it with me whenever I go out just in case I see something I want to take a picture of.
I bought this product because I needed a digital camera that I could carry all the time yet provide pictures with excellent quality.
I love the small size of the product. It takes wonderful pictures. Since this is my first digital camera, I cannot compare it another one, but I can tell you that you won't be disappointed by the quality of the pictures.
I don't like the weight of the camera. It is rather heavy. Also the LCD can be hard to see sometimes in sunlight.
Pros: compact
Good when working
Cons: durability
noise in night shots
When it works, the camera takes good pictures. Unfortunately mine broke twice in 1.5 years. This time it is out of warranty and the cost to repair is $160. Ouch! Canon is not willing to work with me at all even though this is the second time my camera has had problems.
review of Canon PowerShot SD100 Digital Camera by hgvf ,Dec 25 '04
Pros: This camera is very small and light in weight. Cons: The price is a little bit too high.
This camera has so many features like a 2X digital/optical zoom, stainless steel casing, ultra compact size, and ability to capture crisp and clear photos in the dark. I bought this camera because of its versatility and size.
I bought 2 months ago but my decision to buy was almost 4 months through evaluating amongs 9 comparable brands.I use for evaluating weak zones of security systems in strategic and commercial buildings, and making short simulations of training for an anti terrorist special force. Also for comparing designs of interiors and equipments.Very easy to use, easy to store the data in my computer, using it as a play back movies equipmt, wide variations of creatives photographs, speedy accidently movie recording.A reasonable pocket size zoom camera, sharp print resolutions in repro even with a simple printers.I doubt in the durability.I had recommed to 5 friends to buy.
I bought a few cameras... by aschi_dt3000 ,Dec 14 '02
I bought a few cameras before getting this one. I had two Nikons (885, 3MP and the 4300, 4MP) and one Pentax (5MP, not sure the model). This Canon has: the best picture quality (by far), best resources (BW, 9 point focus, film w/ sound, you change b/n modes easily, you can review pictures easily). The interface program is also the best among the three. Really happy with it.
This camera will appeal to almost everyone looking for a small camera to carry around. Pictures are very good. Movie clips are excellent. One minor gripe;you cannot touch this camera without leaving your fingerprints. You'll need a larger CF card so pick up a good carrying case and a soft cloth to keep it clean, too. All things considered this is a very good camera! I would recommend this little gem to all in the market for a small, compact, well-built camera.
I am really happy with this buy. The mini movie is great with its sound recording. The 16MB included in the package though is very limited in terms of capacity and the accessories are very expensive (e.g. direct power connector, Compact Flash cards, etc.). The company should lower its prices on these accessories. Nonetheless, i highly recommend this product.
The compact size of the camera makes it extremely portable. However, the significant downside is that the telescoping lens must rotate with every power-up. Within a few months the assembly failed. Cannon's minimum quote for repair is $155. I strongly recommend against purchasing any item in this product line.
