by nbostaph , May 06 '05
Pros: Great rates, full online account management, fast & reliable site, quick service
Cons: some additional requirements over standard banks
Overview Capital One Auto Finance, who 'absorbed' PeopleFirst, is an online finance institution that offers loans for buying and refinancing new and used cars. The entire system is online, offering no real brick and mortar services, but the idea ...

Very efficient and quick approval, lousy customer service

by hairymon , Mar 06 '05
Pros: Very efficient application and approval process.
Cons: Poor customer service, deceptive tactics.
I had a loan with HSBC Bank back in the late 1990's on a 1997 Hyundai Sonata I bought new. I also had 3 credit cards with Capital One all in good standing. I got a solicitation to "refinance" my loan with Capital One Auto Finance. They are very ...

Capital One Auto Financing: No, Hassle Finance!

by Alkaiser Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jan 29 '07
Pros: They're fast initially.
Cons: Customer Service is about as useless as a poop-flavored lollipop.
I've just gotten off the phone after having one of the most frustrating phone conversations in my entire life. You know those commercials where David Spade is just yelling "No!" at people? I'm pretty sure he's their main customer serivce rep. Allow me ...

Shady Business Practices

by hatecapone , Jan 13 '06
Pros: NONE
Cons: Extra payment does not go to principal but delays billing cycle
A little background on me is that I tend to pay over what is owed monthly on my loans so that I pay them off quicker and pay less interest. CapitalOne Auto Finance bought out my auto lender Onyx. Now normally I would not care since since several of ...

Easy application process, customer service is lacking

Pros: easy application, low rates
Cons: Instructions for the Blank Check could have been clearer. Of course customer service

Cons: No way to contact a human, poor closure, subpar customer service.

Pros: Seemingly easy, hassle-free financing (although I never experienced it)
Cons: Highest interest rates around.

by kingtj , Mar 15 '09
Pros: Good interest rates, decent web site
Cons: Customer non-service

Pros: fast approval
Cons: everything else takes forever to fund the check "blank check" isnt really a check
i applied for capital one financing, got approved within a day, then took a couple days to get the check and had to send them some more information, everything went ok......... then i went to the dealer and used the check, says on the back of the check guaranteed payment within one buisness day and the bank claimed that it would take a week to fund the check........the blank check sucks and isnt even really a check, its actually a draft which has to be converted into a check..... i ended up cancelling it and got financing thru the dealer in about 20 mins.

Deceiving, and could have been embarrassed at dealer.
by stinka ,Aug 09 '05
Pros: Ability to submit your own application online.
Cons: Deceptive solicitation.
I was pre-approved according to the letter they sent me. All I had to do was bring in the required materials (paystub, phone bill, references) to the dealer. I had a suspicion, so I tried to apply for Cap One financing on my own ,on the website, and it declined my application. My down payment wasn't significant enough. Well, the letter didn't specify what kind of downpayment I needed. I would have been really embarrassed at the dealer.

DECEPTIVE & FRAUDULENT PRACTICES
by eastwindstudio ,Jun 22 '05
Pros: NONE
Cons: Deceptive and perhaps fraudulent practices.
I applied for an auto loan on-line through Capital One. I was quickly approved. They sent me a blank check in the amount of my approval. I did not use the check as I was not sure that I wanted to proceed with the auto purchase. A few weeks after receiving the check, I received my first installment payment invoice! The original blank check was still sitting on my desk. No car was purchase, the check was not cashed yet they wanted me to start making payments. I called them the moment I opened the invoice. They told me the funds (the blank check) were funds already drawn on their bank which of course is insane since the check was not cashed. I would strongly suggest that any consumer shopping for a car loan NOT use Capital One. Just a terrible experience bordering on fraud.

Works Great
by new282 ,Nov 01 '05
Pros: FAST, easy
Cons: No human contact (if you need that sort of thing)
I read the opinions posted here prior to signing with Capital One, and I must say that I did have some second thoughts. However, You cannot beat the interest rate (5.45%) when compared to what my bank was offering (10.7%). I submitted my application at 6:10 PM, was approved at 6:15 PM, called them to confirm some things, and was off the phone by 6:30. My blank check arrived the next morning, and I purchased my car two days later. My first payment is due in four weeks. From my perspective, if you have a good credit rating and you know what you want, you can't beat it.

Screwed up payments on account caused past due status
by jhpjap ,Oct 30 '06
Pros: Enticed with an easy loan processing setup: a "bait & switch" on customer service.
Cons: Misapplied payments, Failure to process automatic payments, HARD time getting SOMEONE to CORRECT account payments.
Misapplied payments and Failure to Process Automatic Electronic Payments:

Principal only payments were applied incorrectly. The automatic electronic payment designated by the loan contract FAILED to happen for 3 months. On-line information was inaccurate because it did not reflect payments applied to the account. All of this caused our account to become delinquent and was sent to collections.

Collections called us at 9:38am on a Saturday morning to inform us that it was our fault that WE did not make sure that CapOne was following through and making electronic payments from our account. Furthermore, NEGATIVE information was sent to the credit reporting agencies which lowered our credit rating.

Summary:

1. We were guilty of paying MORE than was owed to lower the principal amounts
2. Payments were misapplied
3. CapOne did not process 3 automatic pmts from our bank account
4. Calls to CapOne to correct the problem encountered employees more concerned with “talk time” than with fixing our account
5. Our account was sent to their collections department
6. Negative information was sent to the credit reporting agencies

DO NOT USE CAPITAL ONE for your loans.

Poor Customer Service!!!!! Do not do business with these guys
by sruzylo ,Sep 08 '06
Pros: 50/50 chance the check won't bounce.
Cons: Employees do not have proper product knowledge. Not worth the headache
Customer Service Reps are hit or miss as far as knowing what they are doing. Bought a car and sent the check to the seller's lein holder. I contacted customer service and asked if it was ok to change the terms of the loan on the check I had used from 36 months to 48months. They said no problem becuase the check had not been cashed yet by the leinholder. A little while later I get an e-mail from Capital One saying they are Federal expressing me a new check!!! Will the check I all ready used bounce or go through? That is the ten million dollar question. If it bounces what do I tell the seller? If you do a person to person transaction with CapitalOne you are asking for headaches. If the seller has a lein on the title the headaches are even bigger.

Liked it better when it was PeopleFirst.com
by ccdangie ,Jun 01 '07
Pros: Quick approval
Cons: Computer underwritten, horrible customer service, horrible rates, frustrating website, and horrible customer service
I am in the process of paying off my third and final auto loan with Capital One Auto Finance. Back when it was PeopleFirst.com I applied online and within 20 minutes they had called both my cell and home phone plus an e-mail letting me know I was approved. I received a fantastic rate and their customer service was second to none. After Cap One bought them, the service level dropped considerably when I financed another car with them. Now their website is jacked up and I can't log in despite repeated calls to Customer Service to fix the problem. Furthermore, I applied for a new loan and received a horrible rate despite having perfect credit. Everything is done by computer so zero human underwriting of loans is another aspect of poor customer service. I used to recommend them to other people but now I tell everyone, just go to a local credit union where they have good rates and they care about your business because in effect, they are lending you their own money.

Capital One/Ascension Capital Group - Horrible Service
by tak7591 ,Nov 20 '07
Pros: None that I can think of
Cons: Poor customer service, almost impossible to speak to a person
Admittedly my credit was going down hill and I was getting ready to file bankruptcy. I bought a car and it was financed at a very high rate through Capital One (at the time I didn't feel I had many options). I filed Chapter 13 and will be done in 4 months. My car loan was never assigned to the bankruptcy it was kept out and I have always made my payments, although at times it has been a struggle, this is one of those times. My account now shows 4 months behind. Thinking this would be a good time to call and see if they could work with me. What a total waste of time and energy on my part, dealing with both those groups. Even trying to get to talk to a real person was a major nightmare. They informed me that I was a bankruptcy case and that they will do nothing for these accounts, not even when the bankruptcy is ended. As soon as my bankruptcy is over I will be trying to find a way away from Capital One.

The Worst Ever
by danichap ,Sep 04 '09
Pros: Average loan rate
Cons: Inconsistent info from customer service, which appears to all be outsourced to other countries
I would NEVER use Capital One Auto Finance again and encourage others not to. I have been trying to sell a financed used car and they have made it almost impossible to do so. Each person I talk to there answers my questions differently.

Basically, to release your title you must pay off your loan. If you do this in any way other than a certified check, it will take them up THIRTY DAYS to process the payment before they contact your DMV to release your title (and then the DMV will take it's time to mail it to you).

Unfortunately, I was told differently by a customer service agent and so I paid my loan off with an online payment. As a result, I have to wait about 6 weeks before the new owner can have a signed title in hand (and I will be leaving the country, so now I have to give someone power of attorney in order to sign the title).  Capital One's process has created an awful mess for me. I have never had such programs selling a car before.

Infuriated!
by rinarotq ,Feb 06 '08
Pros: None
Cons: Misleading Customer 'Support'
Dealing with Capitalone Auto Finance has been one of the most horrible experiences of my life. We got approved for up to $18,000 and sent in all of our require paper work. Under dealership responsibilities, they are require to call Capitalone to check that we have met all the requirements which I assume they did. Anyways...we go our brand shiny, new car no problem, yesterday night. Capitalone called us this morning to say that what we sent isn't enough, that they need more. Their argument is completely ridiculous, we had everything required. We have been fighting with them for over two hours, being promised that they will send through the loan anyways by two different people, to being told there is nothing they can do and won't approve the loan. Today we get to take back are car. We have credit cards with them, we plan on paying them off with the money we are "saving" by no car payment, and canceling them. I'm fed up, we will never do business with them again. BEWARE.

Bad service, RUDE people
by ski2fast ,Feb 07 '06
Pros: It was cheaper than my original loan rate.
Cons: THEY HAVE REALLY BAD SERVICE!!!!!
Refinanced my car last summer with Capital One Auto. Car was totaled last month due to no fault of my own. Insurance paid what they were going to pay which left a balance of $1,400. Capital One COLLECTIONS called the next day to demand payment in full in less than four weeks or they would mark my car as repossed on my credit profile. One of the RUDEST people I have ever had to deal with. I wasn’t even trying to spread out the payment, I said I was going to pay by the 28th(D-DAY) but he said I need to make arrangements to pay it NOW and he just kept saying that and wouldn’t even listen to me....I called back to complain about his treatment of me but was directed straight back to him "Charles". "Charles" said I could not complain to anyone about him. He said he had no boss and I had to deal with him no matter what. Then he "disconnected" on me. What a JERK....No more Capital One ANYTHING for me EVER AGAIN!!!

NO NO BEWARE
by muncy_bunch ,Jun 04 '08
Pros: NONE
Cons: Everything
Easy to get loan approval. Raise interest rate. Customer service horrible. Customer service can't even tell you anything more then 3 months back. Keep getting default letters when all that should be due is a payment for this month and one late fee for 1-day late. I am very thankful that I didn't choose to do auto draft because of the fact of what I am hearing. Waiting! to hear back we will see. Would not recommend to anyone! I think I found mistake from back on July 30, 2007, of course customer service doesn't compute back that far couldn't tell me anything. So I have been sending in more then payment every month to get paid down and off quicker. I guess maybe that is the problem lack of what to do with extra money???? Worthless company to deal with.

Capital One Auto Finance SUCKS!!!!
by dstrick7 ,Mar 21 '08
Pros: Nada
Cons: don't tell you their needs, don't let to let you know if there are problems
Don't rely on the information in the "blank check" booklet...you have to be psychic to know what they really want. After having made a person-to-person transaction, I eagerly awaited the "OK" email from C.O., and after the guaranteed 1 day, nothing. So I called...the also have to have a copy of the title, registration, and a vehicle inspection report. OK, the guy I bought it from went to his credit union & asked for a copy of the title, and sent it to me, and I faxed to C.O. I heard nothing from them, so decided to call. They said there was a problem - the vehicle inspection report had no signature, date, & a statement "passed vehicle inspection". [see the trend...if there's a problem, they're not going to let you know about it...call them every few hours!!!]. Apparently, when you fax them, you're supposed to use the exact same fax sheet you had the seller fill out for the most part. I could go on, but my fingers are tired. NEVER USE CAPITAL ONE AUTO FINANCE!!!!!

There loans should be criminal activity
by bgibeau ,Mar 12 '09
Pros: None what so ever
Cons: They are crooks
Having not very good credit I was able to get a loan on a 2004 Jeep Liberty with 27K miles on it for about 18K... I'm about 1/2 way paid off and the balance is still over 12K and blue book is 7K now. This is a hole that will never end. There must be guys smoking Cuban cigars on the beach from this kind of activity. I'm going to make it but in retrospect.... This is the reason the poor stay poor. If REAL interest rates are not available we shouldn't be allowed to get stuff. These guys are legalized gangsters, they need to go away!!

Think Twice...
by gwuengr2 ,Mar 17 '06
Pros: You can apply on the web
Cons: Capital One, for the average customer, is an impenetrable bureaucracy.
My original car loan was with PeopleFirst, who were great to deal with, and then Capital One bought out PeopleFirst.

I will never take a loan out (of any type) with Capital One, they are a huge corporate conglomerate and your loan will carry all of the baggage that comes along with most corporate conglomerate's.

Yes, their customer service stinks, that's because they don't care about any one customer.

Fine by me
by anony221265 ,Mar 25 '08
Pros: Quick. Website great way to monitor loan and payments, and very easy to pay online.
Cons: none
I paid off my 3 year capital one auto loan in 7 months and after reading some of these reviews expected to wait a long time before getting any lien documentation. I was pleasantly surprise, however, when the documentation came two weeks after I paid off the loan. The only negative I saw was that you had to mail a check to pay off the loan and couldn't pay directly with a bank transfer like all the other payments, and really that's only a minor inconvenience. Getting the loan was a breeze, and it was great to go into the car dealer with a loan offer with 2% lower interest than they were willing to give me. I've had a great experience with capital one and would absolutely recommend them.

No Problems
by ljohnson123 ,Aug 15 '06
Pros: Fast, saves time and hassle when negotiating with the dealer.
Cons: they limit you to a very specific amount you can spend.
I applied online and received the check very quickly. It saved a lot of time at the dealer because I didn't have to negotiate dealer financing into the final cost of the car. The payment is automatically deducted from my bank account.

Capitol One is bad bad bad!!!!
by els8803 ,Mar 14 '07
Pros: NONE
Cons: EVERYTHING IS BAD ABOUT THEM THEY WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE
I too am a victim of capitol one they have taken my credit hostage. I received a payoff letter from them last year. I paid what they told me to. and then 2 weeks later they send me a letter saying i still owe approx $600.00 and then another letter saying i owe approx $800.00 but in the mean time they send me my title. and then then phone calls started they would call every hour on the hour and i would be on the phone and call waiting would ring in and it would be another customer service rep threatning me telling me another amt i would have to pay. I have filed several complaints with the FTC and I pray that justice will be served and we could be involved in the class action law suit against this horrible company!!!!!!

Worst rate for an auto refinancing
by ronald_dato ,Mar 30 '07
Pros: none
Cons: Very opportunistic on refinance, only intent is much profit from your wallet.
The rate given to me is ridiculous from 15% to 13.75% that is with a very good credit record and credit score. This is one of the opportunistic Banks like the car dealers who just want to take advantage of people trying to get out from debt. Don't even waste your time applying for a refinance. Their customer services are the worst dumb people Ive ever have to talk with. They don't know anything about the service they are providing.

overnight delivery invoice
by spammyemail ,Jul 28 '08
Pros: online
Cons: bad customer service
I ordered the Blank Check on May 25th with the overnight delivery. On June 4th, it was still not here, so I called. It turned out that Capital One had never sent it! I get a check sent to me...but I didn't end up using it. I still received a $15 fee for the overnight delivery. I called and told them the situation. They said that they sent me an email telling me to call them before they would send it out, so I still owe the money. This is not true, as the email says to log into my account OR call. I logged into my account immediately. I really hate when phone reps do not know what the website/bulk mail/email says.

by kelijean ,Dec 21 '05
Pros: Low rate for used vehicle
Cons: OVERALL a BIG hassle
I paid my loan in full 5 months ago. They applied my payment incorrectly and it took several weeks to get it fixed.

Never received a title release despite several calls. Now since I moved they refuse to send it to my new address!

Never again.

Worst Company I have ever Dealt With!!!!
by reese77 ,Mar 21 '07
Pros: Great rate...
Cons: worst customer service ever...not worth the rate...
I paid off my Truck in October 2006 2 Years before my loan was scheduled to be paid off. I have fought with them every week asking for my lien release and title, and also my credit to show as paid. Every week they would tell me they were sending it out, and that I would get my title and that they would report at the end of the quarter. Guess what I finally got my lien release (only) the lien release I have to go pay for my title, and it was dated March 13 this year 2007. Seems like all they do is lie. I was told the last time it would be sent overnight, I told them I wanted a tracking number they gave me one..a fake one..and sent it normal mail. they still show on my credit as a 25,000 debt..and well if I call I will just get another line of bull. If you can go elsewhere, do for your own peace of mind.

Terrible when you have an issue
by joepistritto ,Jan 05 '06
Pros: None
Cons: You have to do all the legwork to resolve an issue.
I cancelled the extended warranty and the refund should have been credited to my loan balance. However, CapitalOne says they've never received it. Furthermore, their customer service reps aren't willing to go any further to help than to just look whether they cashed a check for the refund amount. They won't even call the automotive company's finance arm.

Basically, over the last 4 days I've called both about 20 times and neither have been very helpful.

Before this experience I would have recommended them to a friend. However, after this I will never use them again.

Unbelievable
by goya24 ,Mar 18 '08
Pros: NONE.
Cons: Total lack of customer service.
This company has a total and complete lack of customer service. I challenge anyone to find a competent individual to talk to within their organization. Please...do not even consider making an application with this company. They are incompetent, and worse, they don't care a lick about you. You will only wind up extremely frustrated.

The WORST experience ever.
by it_group ,Aug 01 '07
Pros: I honestly can not think of a single one.
Cons: Horrible service. Bait & Switch. Delays. These guys should be investigated and shut down.
They sucker you in by "approving" you instantly and appearing very efficient. The "approval" is not real - they can (ad dis with me three times) do a "real" approvals, confirmations, change rates, and other games after the fact. Then there is the absolute lack of customer service and inability to talk to anyone human, ever. And if you do get a human, they can do nothing more for you than the computer. You might as well be talking to a rock.

Oh, and did I mention that they don't always honor the blank check? It is NOT as good as cash. I had to wait almost three weeks for my car to be released to me because the dealer claims that Capital One checks are about as good as any old personal check. At the time I thought they were playing games, but now I know better.

I honestly wish I could rate this even lower. If you have ANY other option, do not use Capital One! You have been warned!

Hard to use, support is from India, and it stinks
by rrasmussenjrNew Member ,Nov 17 '09
Pros: Sorta convenient for the seller.
Cons: When you get someone from India who is clueless, the frustration really mounts.
After working the automated phone system that is only good at directing customers to their website, I finally got a human from somewhere near Mumbai.  He was great with a script, but he had no clue how to help and transferred me to an native English speaker.  (somewhere in North America I'm presuming from the accent)  If you want to support the export of jobs through your own frustrating experience then hook up with capital one.
