Pros: Very Authentic feel inside the doors. Recipes that cannot be found elsewhere. Cons: Plastic chairs and plastic water glasses used in the outdoor porch and patio area.
My business brought me to Philadelphia very recently. I thought I would forgo my usual Philly Steak Sandwich in the afternoon and try something even more authentic to the city of Brotherly Love. I went to the City Tavern. SOME HISTORY This ...
Pros: Food is good and fresh. Staff is good. Great atmosphere. Unique. Cons: Overpriced, especially drinks and dessert. Tables too close together.
If you are a tourist and are looking for a place to go that is very unique in Philadelphia, the City Tavern might be the best place for you to go. This restaurant is very schticky ... from the waitors and waitresses and the hosts who wear period costumes ...
Pros: great historic/colonial decor and feel. great (& historical)food, coupons at visitor center, no reservations needed. Cons: The waiter was mumbling in an accent that he was not good at rendering.
I was in a bookstore outlet in lancaster and I came across the cookbook for City Tavern. I had never been to the restaurant but had seen it on TVFN (TV Food Network) and figured I would take a look. The recipes really did look great. A few days later I...
Pros: Shows the best of Colonial Philadelphia Cons: Parking is not conducive
Go back to Colonial Times at City Tavern. The food is prepared in the manner of long ago. Every morsel is delicious. At City Tavern parties of two or 22 are welcomed with a pleasant smile and gracious hospitality.
Relive the times of George...
Pros: Great experience to take you back in time Cons: Too unique to eat here too often
I first saw this restaurant on one of the cooking shows on PBS and was dying to try it. So as soon as I got the opportunity, we went traveling to the city to taste the offerings at City Tavern. The ambiance is wonderful, with the old floor boards and...
Second worst Prime Rib I ever had by ryinnj ,Jan 29 '05
Pros: Ambiance Cons: Tourist Trap
I should have know better! Ordering Prime Rib in any place other then a steakhouse. It was overcooked, did not lie flat on the plate - sort of curled up, an indication that it was not cooked as part of a roast - and it was served with barbecue sauce rather then Au Jus. A restaurant of this quality should remove this item from the menu if it cannot cook it properly, and I should have my head examined for ordering it.
Aside from that, the soup was good (I forget exactly what I ordered). My wife order the George (or Martha) Washington Chicken Pot Pie - that was OK but nothing spectacular.
When the waiter asked how everything was I told him the above and he said I should have told him sooner and he would have done something about it. I now take that advise to heart and in the future intend to complain early if not up to par.
IMHO this place caters to tourists who come for the ambiance, of that there is plenty.
