Pros: A comfortable leash, great for training Cons: Cannot be left on the dog during the day
Kaycie, our West Highland White Terrier, is an escape artist. When she was a puppy, she tried every means possible to slip out of the house and roam the neighborhood. For a long time, commands meant nothing to her. Stay? Whaddya mean stay? ...
In the spring of 1996, I decided to adopt a Greyhound, as I had to put one of my dogs to sleep, and the remaining dog was lonely. And since I have always supported adopting these wonderful animals, I thought she would make a great pet (which she has)....
Pros: Safe, difficult for the dog to escape from Cons: Cannot be left on the dog except while supervised
Imagine that you are walking down the street, enjoying a leisurely walk with your dog. It's time to go home so you turn around to return to your house. You walk a few feet then your way too smart for her own good dog realizes that the walk is over, and...
Pros: Inexpensive, lightweight Cons: Not as good as the the nylon/chain training collars
We have two German Wirehaired Pointers, Chelsea was our first, got her as a puppy and we just got Tug as a rescue. "Tug" is a misnomer as a name. He doesn't tug and walks very well.
Chelsea has been in agility for a year, obedience(not her...
Pros: The best collar I've ever seen Cons: Not easy to find in stores
When I adopted my corgi, Logan, in mid-1995 he came with a nylon choke collar. Which seemed to do the job, but his fur was always matted down under the collar. And if he really wanted to, he could slip the collar by hunching his head back towards his...
Pros: Works great on the pet who likes to slip the traditional leather or nylon collar. Cons: Hard to find in extra large size!
This pet collar is a great buy for someone who has a dog that likes to slip his collar, be it when you are trying to grab him while he is headed out the door or while you are out on a nice walk.
As a volunteer with a dog rescue I have the luxury of seeing every kind of collar on almost every type of dog. At the rescue we use ONLY no slip collars. This is the only collar we have found that does not choke the dog and does not slip off the dog. A very active, strong, frightened dog can slip out of just about every kind of collar there is. This collar is the exception. We have never had a dog escape one of these, they are excellent!
Pros: don't know Cons: you can't unsnap it in an emergency!
This weekend I witnessed an awful situation involving a slip collar at a dog park, I don't know what brand it was. Two dogs who were wrestling got horribly stuck, as one dog managed to get his jaw under the slip collar, or his lower teeth stuck in one of the slip collar rings--It was hard to tell as there was no room to maneuver and the dog's mouth became pretty bloody. The more he pulled the tighter the collar got on the other dog. It was horrendous. The collar had to be cut off with a knife, which fortunately the owner had in his pocket. It took two of us to hold them while he cut the collar off, which was difficult because of its sturdy construction. I shudder to think what would have resulted if that had happened while he was at work. I guess the point is to NEVER keep a slip collar on a dog who isn't on a leash and NEVER let your dog wear one if he plays with other dogs.
