Pros: Great story, tremendous 3D, fine voice acting Cons: A little too grim for younger children
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this film. I wasn't overly fond of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" or "James and the Giant Peach" which were directed and written for the screen by Henry Selick. However, Neil Gaiman won a Hugo for the ...

Pros: Animation, characters, 3-D effect, Ian McShane, Dakota Fanning. Cons: Animated nudity was disconcerting.
A Henry Selick film wouldn’t be complete without eerily crafted creatures created from inanimate objects that project an independent sense of spookiness. When Coraline opens, we are greeted by mechanical hands fashioned from sewing ...

Pros: ... good puppetry, decent story... Cons: ... just never really cared about what was happening, not enough humour...
I'd been looking forward to seeing Coraline, though a bit miffed that we had to wait months for it to come to cinemas in the UK. Still, arrive in Britain it did, and we duly went to see it. We watched it in 3D because... well, because it was ...

Pros: Neil Gaiman's story and Henry Selicks direction make Coraline a great movie for older children. Cons: This will frighten the heck out of younger children!
The moment I saw the ads for Coraline, I knew I wanted to see it. It looked so Burtoneseque! Moreover, despite being in my early forties, I am a big kid at heart. I dragged my son and one of his friends to see Coraline. The film is based on a Neil Gaiman ...

Pros: Detailed, colorful and exciting animation Action keeps you mesmerized Definite moral to this tale Cons: Could be too dark and scary for younger children
My husband and I brought our two children (10 and 12) to the theatre to see Coraline. It was billed as a movie for the entire family, and we enjoyed the movie overall. Coraline is an animated film unlike the standard Disney fare. The movie begins when ...

Pros: Visually stunning stop motion animation and suitably creepy Cons: It dragged a bit too much at times
Coraline Jones and her parents just moved into an apartment on the ground floor of a very old house. Coraline's parents have no time to spend with their ‘tween daughter and Coraline is left to her own devices for entertainment. She ...

Pros: Fantastic!! Cons: Some scenes not appropriate or too scary for young children.
I went to see Coraline last night with my 10 year old son. I had no idea what the movie would be like and I didn't even know it was animated. I have to say that I enjoyed this wonderful film more than I ever thought possible. ...

Pros: Visuals, dialogue. Cons: Story isn't unique.
When you walk into the theater that Coraline is playing at, the first thing that you'll probably notice is that there are plenty of kids around you. When the movie starts playing, the second thing you'll probably notice is that this movie wasn't ...

Pros:
Great animation, great flow Cons:
Poor development of Coraline and family
Before I saw this movie I read someone describe it as Alice in Wonderland without the Alice. I disagree with this, I call this a version of an animated Twilight zone on acid; then cleaned up for the little ones. This is an absolutely ...

Pros: The 3-D animation, Henry Selick's adaptation, Neil Gaiman's original story, the characters. Cons: Occasionally feels a little slow. Might be too scary for young children.
Coraline is a movie that I have waited years to see. I read the book back in college and I couldn’t wait to see it when it was finally brought to the big screen. Based on the young adult novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman (one of my favorite ...

Pros: Suspenseful, creepy, nice voicing, beautiful animation Cons: Animated nudity, too scary for younger children
Coraline is based off the book by Neil Gaiman. It's a film with a truly original plot, about a young girl who, after moving into a new house, finds her life boring and dull. Her parents don't give her the time of day, the new kid in the neighborhood is ...

Pros: Good family movie with a message. Cons: 3D did not work properly.
I took my two sons on a date to see Coraline in 3D. I really enjoyed the movie and the concept that your parents are the perfect parents for you. We could have done without the 3D I don't know if it was the theater that we were at or if the glasses were ...

Coraline: if your child is scared during Harry Potter, DON'T let them see this one!
by jurgrace ,Feb 19 '09
Pros: Attractive animation Cons: Scared the bejeesus out of my six year-old
My six year-old daughter went to see Coraline with her daycare program a couple of days ago. I had not heard anything positive or negative about the movie beforehand, but had seen some beautiful stop-motion animation in the previews and thought there would be no problem for her.
In retrospect, I should have just kept her home that day. Based on what she saw in the movie, my daughter came home afraid that my husband and I would go into a mirror and leave her forever. My understanding is that Coraline does not stay permanently separated from her parents (by the end of the film), but that has not been helpful to my little girl. She has been terrified and clingy after sunset for the last two days, scared that we are going to leave her.
Bottom Line: if your child is on the young side (maybe seven and under?), and would be scared by a Harry Potter or Star Wars flick, I would not send them to Coraline.
