Sliding door that pops out and deposits freshly ground and brewed coffee everywhere
by elsie07041 ,May 25 '08
Pros: If you want to stand and monitor the chew and brew, you'll be ok.
Cons: Makes a mess, did I mention it makes a mess?
Owned a previous Cuisinart 'chew and brew'. That had mixed reviews, too, but I learned to love it. When it died a couple of months ago, I used a stand alone grinder and coffee pot. So, when I happened upon this newer incarnation I was happy to purchase it and bring it home, thinking that some of the design flaws of the earlier model had to be gone. That was true, but this machine has a doozy of a flaw of its own. The drawer that holds the filter filled with freshly ground coffee spontaneously pops open, spewing coffee everywhere. The first time this happened, I wasn't in the room and came back to find a coffee lake on my counter, cabinets and floor. I figured it was a fluke -- new machine. The second time, I happened to be standing right there when it popped out. I made a quick save and shoved it back in. I thought, maybe it's me, I'm not replacing the parts correctly. The third time, I made sure to do everything 'perfectly'. Uh-Uh. It's going back today.

Grinding and Brewing no more.
by morgansuntan ,Sep 17 '05
Pros: Stainless steel finish looks cool.
Cons: Cold, weak, gross coffee! Too many parts - uncleanable!
We received this as a gift and have been trying to live with it... but we finally decided to give up.

With pre-heating the carafe and grinding our own beans to compensate for the well-documented design flaws, we were able to maintain sanity for a year and a half. But, the inability to reach inside the carafe (due to its design) and give it a proper cleaning has resulted in every pot of fresh coffee tasting stale and old. Even buying the most expensive and delicious beans doesn't help.

Don't buy this coffee maker for yourself or anyone else, and if you get it as a gift, return it!!!!

Cuisinart DGB-600BCC Grind & Brew Coffeemaker
by sixteentons ,Jul 07 '09
Pros: Can be programmed to grind and brew your morning (or anytime) coffee.
Cons: Grinder may wear out prematurely, as ours did (4 years).
We purchased this item from AirMiles 4 years ago.
We have had numerous 'spills' while this machine brews.
Mostly, though, these were caused by operator error.
The grinder wore out prematurely as well, but when set up and operated correctly, makes very good, freshly brewed coffee.
It is very important to ensure that the basket has 'clicked' into place, and that the lid is on correctly.
Any of our problems have been caused by the basket swinging partly open during grinding, or the carafe lid being on incorrectly.
Cleaning is best resolved by using the faucet sprayer to remove all the left over remains from the grinder bowl and lid. It is very important to dry these items before use, so that you don't get a build-up.
The results from this unit is directly proportional to the quality of beans and preperation.

18 Months of Aggravation
by zoesmom ,Sep 06 '07
Pros: Attractive and makes good coffee.
Cons: Price, maintenance, noisy, leaky, awkward thermos.
Bought this because I love the look and think of Cuisinart as a quality product. This product is difficult to use, lots of steps and parts to get in just right or it leaks. Maintenance is high...daily cleaning of the grinder is a must as the steam wets the grounds and they harden like cement in the holder. The grinder is NOISY. Guaranteed to wake you up without the caffeine. Thermal container is awkward and difficult to pour. Just too many steps and maintenance for me. We've used it daily for 18 months and it's still going strong and it does make very good coffee. Wouldn't buy it again.

Don't do it!
by noirin ,Jun 11 '06
Pros: Beautiful looking
Cons: Hard to clean, Weak Coffee, Very loud grinder,
I bought this coffee maker because it looks beautiful, and I had another Cuisinart with a thermal carafe, so I felt that this would be an improved version. This machine is a joke. You have to clean the coffee grinder section (two parts) and the grounds basket (two parts) every time. It makes a big mess. In addition, because it is so different than other coffee makers I have used, and I only use it at the weekend, I invariably forget one of the six steps required to brew coffee, and end up with grounds everywhere and have to start from scratch.

I had a party last weekend, and discovered that 4 of my friends have the same model, and they are all unhappy with it.

If you buy this, keep it near the sink, because it requires a lot of cleaning. Be prepared to use 1.5 times the normal amount of coffee, because the grinder is not good. Also, the coffee is not hot enough for my taste.

cuisinart grind and brew
by craigjordaens ,Sep 18 '07
Pros: Good coffee went it was new
Cons: Doesn't last long enough to justify the higher price
Returned the first one for warrantee, grinder broken. The replacment worked good for almost a year before the grinder did the same thing but this time we decided to use it without the grinder. Now, once in a while, while it is brewing, the basket full of wet coffee grounds pops out, overflows and dumps coffee and coffee grounds all over the counter and beyond. Needless to say, we will not be returning this one for another just like it, we will try a different brand.

Too much work for a cup of coffee!
by jwcallahan ,Dec 22 '06
Pros: stylish, water filter, bean grinder, timer
Cons: complicated, poor design/function, lots of work to keep clean
Although very stylish, this model has many small parts and - with the required cleaning after/before every use - is very difficult to clean; particularly if you used the built-in bean grinder. Compared to other coffeemakers that have a water reservoir, coffee basket, and carafe, this unit has six or seven pieces to clean. The other inconvenience - in our kitchen - is that the coffeemaker's water reservoir is built in meaning that you have to fill the reservoir from the carafe (unlike other models where you can remove the reservoir for filling in the sink - nice when your coffee maker is not situated right next to the sink). One final note, pouring coffee from the carafe requires you to turn the carafe almost on end. The coffee trickles out the spout. Why it's engineered this way, I don't know (someone's idea of "safety" I imagine. All in all, don't buy it - keep looking.

Good at first but prone to repair
by bbaillod ,Nov 13 '05
Pros: Attractive looking and works well
Cons: Won't pump the full amount of water, needs repair frequently.
This is a good looking coffeemaker but after owning it for a year both myself and my neighbor are looking for something different because we both have a brewing problem. The coffeemaker won't pump all the water into the coffeepot, you have to hit brew 4 times to get a full pot. It sounds to me like it is just unreliable so I'm going to buy something different.

Faulty design--don't buy!
by liz78 ,May 29 '05
Pros: Very stylish looking, and it's nice to have the thermal carafe.
Cons: Built-in bean grinder is very poorly designed.
I had the same problem with this coffeemaker as another reviewer did. The grinder gets stuck and can only be removed for cleaning with a pair of pliers now. There is a broken plastic seal that I think is the source of the trouble. It probably melted from the steam that gets trapped in the machine every time you brew a pot. This coffee maker is only 2 years old and so I am hoping the Cuisinart warranty covers it. Otherwise it will have been a big waste of money on a $150 machine that lasted fewer years than my last $20 coffee maker did.

Even when the pot WAS working, it was a pain to clean out the grinder each time. I would much rather have a separate bean grinder and have saved myself this misery every morning.

Great Coffee taste...but cleaning is time consuming
by coffeenut-24-7 ,Mar 06 '07
Pros: Great tasting coffee, Grinds Fresh beans. Easy to use.
Cons: Time consuming on cleaning the grinding unit.
We purchased this at Great Outdoors, it was expensive.
We loved fresh ground coffee beans, figured this would be best machine for us. We love the taste of the coffee. We like the built in grinder. The coffee stays hots up to four hours. I hate the cleaning! It is messy and time consuming. We have had this since 2001 and the grinder is now shot. For me, that is a record on length of time I have kept a coffee pot. I give it a great rating. I have had every kind of coffee maker, Braun, Black & Decker, Kitchenaid, Cheap ones and expensive. This one has worked better than all the others and lasted 4 times longer.

It looks pretty, but....
by thekingsk ,Mar 29 '06
Pros: It's pretty.
Cons: Time-consuming use and cleaning, and the grinder doesn't work properly.
We were pleased when we received this coffeemaker as a gift. We always grind our coffee, and this looked really handy. It's not - it's very time-consuming to use and to clean. Worse yet, the grinding results in such large chunks of bean getting to the filter area that you have to use HUGE amounts of coffee to get something more than light brown water. Plus, it's difficult to see how much water you're putting in. So, we're using our old grinder and coffeemaker, while this one just sits on the counter and looks pretty.

Not easy to pour
by jbelson ,Mar 07 '07
Pros: Freshly ground coffee. Pot keeps coffee warm.
Cons: Difficult to pour. Grinding is kinda loud.
I like the idea of freshly ground coffee each morning and have pretty much liked the machine so far.
My only issue is the coffee pot itself. It has to be turned almost upside down to pour. The spout is after the lip which makes it difficult. The grind feature is a little loud, but hey, it's grinding coffee.

Started to Die after 15 Months; Died in month 16
by as404346 ,Nov 14 '06
Pros: Convenient (when it works).
Cons: Pain to clean. Died at 16 months old.
I prefer buying coffee beans vs ground coffee. For 12 months I liked this machine. But in month 15 it started to give me a headache. I had to plug it out and plug it in constantly to reset the machine to make it work. Now it simply does not work. This machine didn't even last 18 months. Cuisinart quality machine.

Just bought our 2nd one...
by bristlecone ,Jun 02 '07
Pros: Works great, not difficult to clean, easy to set up, etc. We're happy with it.
Cons: None.
The first one lasted ~5 years until it started running eratically. I believe this was was due to the periodic (once or twice per year) thorough cleaning of the door mechanism, which required me to rinse the unit under a running faucet for a minute or two. That's my method anyway.

Make sure you unplug it FIRST if you rinse the unit under a running faucet!

But it did last 5 years and worked great overall and we used it EVERYDAY.

So we just bought our 2nd one at Costco. Bought the 1st one there also.

If Costco has been selling them for ~5 years you know it's a quality product because they do a good job researching all their wares before offering them to their member customers.

Anyhow, after a few days use one can learn how to clean the unit sufficiently in just under one minute.

That's our experience anyway.

It's also very easy to set up. Just fill the bean cup up to the rim, add water and grind and brew right then or set the timer for automatic startup at a later time.

And the most important thing, it makes great coffee!

BUY IT!
