Best geotagging option for midrange to pro Nikon DSLRs

Pros: Works as advertised, very easy to use, relatively power saving, excellent time to first fix
Cons: Drains power until unplugged. Long term durability uncertain due to plastic hot shoe foot.
Nikon DSLR bodies have had the ability to geotag pictures for ages (embed GPS coordinates inside the picture's EXIF metadata). Unfortunately, that required buying the inordinately expensive ($85) adapter cable that fits into the remote control socket, ...
