A Good, Affordable Laptop for Average Users

by fyvel , Aug 19 '06
Pros: A lightweight, durable laptop that performs better than expected.
Cons: No, I do not want to buy a TV.
Sometime around May/June 2005, I realized that a laptop would be a really convenient thing to have. I had just started my summer internship, and after 4 weeks of not having access to a computer at work, hand-writing my assignments during the day and ...

Should have got a better laptop

by unitg2 , Nov 26 '05
Pros: Feels solid, quiet, good keyboard.
Cons: Ugly grainy screen, poor wireless signal and no TV out.
Well built feels solid and is very quiet. Keyboard is much improved over my previous Dell in feel and layout. Size and weight is fine for how tough it feels. System updates are thorough and easy to find and install from the Dell website. Extended ...

I Want My Seven Gigabytes!

by Bruguru Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Aug 19 '05
Pros: Basic functions work well, free wireless card and printer.
Cons: Poor screen picture, missing drive space, horrible support.
These days, the trend with computers is towards increasingly lower prices. I think that the trend has probably peaked, with brand new desktop systems being offered by top names like Dell for as little as $299, and laptops going for as little as ...

Excellent laptop for the price

by mrp124 , Jul 10 '05
Pros: Excellent value for 640 dollars, DELL reliability, good batt life, good screen resolution(14.1)
Cons: Graphics card fixed, slow on boot up,unnecessary software junk
This is my second DELL. The first is a desktop 4600. This laptop is not for the high end power users (get a XPS Gen 2, but it is an excellent choice for the budget minded consumer looking for general all purpose use like word processing, Internet ...

Dell Inspiron 2200 Notebook Computer
by texrodeo ,Apr 16 '08
Pros: 15-inch screen and resolution, ease of use, portability, Very well constructed, Innovative.
Cons: Substandard Dell Support, High Dell Prices on parts, recommend aftermarket parts use common since though.
I got my Inspiron in a barter deal 2 years ago, Bartering off 2 full Pentium-3 Systems. I have had to get a battery for it and replace the original on-board keyboard that was missing keys when I got it. This is a Inspiron is a 1.7GHz. Pentium M Processor, 15-inch TTF Screen, 512 MB of RAM and an 80GB Hard Drive. when I got this, it originally had Windows XP Home Edition, and I wiped the drive and installed Windows XP Professional and customized it to fit my needs. This is my Main Laptop and really have enjoyed this one. I have been a PC/MAC tech for more than 16 years and this is the computer for me and my needs. My Home System is also a Dell (Dimension 8100) and so far it does very well. I have a Backup Laptop that is an HP Pavilion N5240 that I recently acquired and really see potential in.

Beware before you buy!
by ctijohn ,Mar 25 '06
Pros: Great price and runs fine when you remove all of the fluff.
Cons: Basically a cheap piece of crap that I can't believe bears the Dell name.
I bought a 2200 for my daughter for school and the first thing I had to do was remove all of the useless junk that was preloaded on it and slowing it down to a crawl. I then added extra memory. Within days of the UNBELIEVABLE 90 day warranty expiring the keyboard became possesed and started typing double letters and numbers with every keystroke. I couldn't even log on in safe mode. I did a system restore and still the same thing pointing to a bad motherboard. Tech Support is firmly sticking to "it is not a warranty problem" and I would have to pay for repairs. I am fighting my way up the chain until someone agrees it is a warranty issue or I'll hand deliver it to corporate in Texas!

Terrible Support/Much Head Banging
by white_buffalo ,Jan 17 '06
Pros: PC fine, loaded software buggy.
Cons: Worst possible support, obstructionist, stonewalling.
We wanted an inexpensive laptop for my daughter so that she could do her homework. We bought a Dell Inspiron 2200 because that's what we could afford. She needed wi-fi
software loaded and this PC had it but the wi-fi software
was buggy. Tech support in some 3rd world country could not
help so they told us to send the computer back after 3
days of hassling with them by telephone, i.e, hang-ups,
dead-end telephone extensions, etc.

We got the new computer and everything seemed to work for a month, the wi-fi was working and then she couldn't connect, like before. The software says it's receiving a strong signal but she cannot access any websites to do her homework. We suspect the same problem; buggy wi-fi software.

She's been using my desktop when I need it.

Dell cheated us on the $150 rebate we were to have received
from them on the first computer because the second computer,
the replacement, was not written up with the rebate! Well,
if the 1st computer is loaded with bad software, what are we to do and why don't we get out rebate since Dell sent us junk the first time?

Basic but good value
by brasche ,Dec 11 '05
Pros: Price, size, weight, battery life, wifi, DirectX9 graphics.
Cons: Screen, keyboard, lack of features
Bought for $800 with 256mb, high capacity LI battery, and DL DVD burner. Added an aftermarket 512mb dimm for $60.

Pros: The built-in Dell WiFi works well with my super-G Netgear router (as well as my removable Netgear nics). Battery life is 3+ hours, and recharges in about the same amount of time. The weight is about 6 lbs. and it's relatively compact for a 15-inch screen. It processes web pages quickly and runs Google World smoothly. The construction is not the best, but it is sturdy and the plastics are solid. It is quick to boot and quick to resume from standby. Stays reasonable cool.

Cons: The keyboard is a little narrow (for a 14" screen model) and has a stiff feel. The touch pad lacks sensitivity and sometimes misses taps. Color replication is poor (incorrect hues), color saturation is poor (dull colors) and light shades are washed-out to full brightness. The screen is absolutely not suited to photography, but is OK for browsing, graphics and DVDs. Ports are minimal with just sound, monitor, ethernet, modem and 3 usb connections.

In summary, a solid budget computer with a lackluster screen and undersized keyboard.

Good deal for the money
by esjack ,Jul 22 '05
Pros: executive design; lightweight; good price for features (about $850 after coupon)
Cons: Fingerprints show on black case; unnecessary programs
I've had this laptop for about three weeks. No problems thus far. I added a Microsoft office suite after purchase and deleted some of the unnecessary programs. I upgraded to the 15" screen, Pentium M processor, and internal wireless card. I am pleased with my purchase as I have used it mostly for word processing and internet browsing. It is lightweight and convenient for travel. Excellent for this graduate student always on the go.

Nobody can believe it only cost $750
by jakew8 ,May 30 '05
Pros: Wireless, bright screen, light enough, nice keyboard
Cons: No discrete video, no s-video out, lots of useless software loads on start-up
This laptop has amazing specs for what it costs. We got:

14" display
1.4 GHz Celeron M
512 MB RAM
30 GB Hard Drive
CD-RW/DVD Drive
Internal B/G Wireless card
2 Years On-site service

The computer isn't too slick-looking: it's a matte black finish all over. And it doesn't have its own video memory, nor can it output video to a television (a feature I love about my Latitude D600).

Everything else is great though. Has everything listed above, and was only $750 ($250 off and $100 rebate). The screen is very bright if you turn it all the way up. The keyboard feels nice, although some of the buttons aren't in their normal locations.

The computer doesn't come with an XP installation CD, but you can burn one with an included utility. And boy was I glad...

This computer (and any new Dell in fact) is so loaded with memory-hogging, useless software that this computer took longer to boot up than the 300 MHz P-II it replaced! The first thing I did was burn that XP cd, format the hard drive, and reload from scratch. After that, this thing runs great.
