I am a technical analyst working for a company who prefers Dell PC's. I have been using a Latitude D610 for the past 6 months. The model I am currently using has 1 GB of RAM, a 1.8 Pentium M, and a 60 GB Hard drive. This is a pretty good business ...
Pros: When it works, it's fine Cons: Unreliable and poor service
The laptop was purchased with the docking station. It had problems from the start which got worse with time. They first appeared to be software related but my company's internal computer support could not identify source of the problem. Then intermittently the system did not recognize the mouse when docked. Dell replaced the docking station under warranty. It seemed to work for a while, but the problem returned. Then other problems began to appear and attempts to diagnose them failed. Dell advised that the motherboard should be replaced and that they would send out a tech to do the install (the system still under warranty). The Dell tech did not show up the on day promised. When he showed up 2 days later, he brought the wrong model motherboard. I'm still waiting. This is a system that I use for work and cannot be without. If reliability and prompt service matters to you - Do NOT by a Dell.
Pros: Good size, no technical problems. Cons: Short battery life.
I had to get this particular laptop for my college, and so far I am impressed. My only complaint would be that the battery dies fairly quickly.(About 2 hours). I like the size and weight, it is essentially ideal for students. It was also a pretty good price, (also good for college students.) I would suggest this for anybody who just wants an average laptop for everyday use.
This is my 5th Dell Latitude, all purchased used on Ebay. Started with a PII, 233; moved to a PIII, 800; a C600, 1.2; to a C640, 2.4. The D610 is lighter, runs much cooler than the C640, and looks nicer. In the past I had problems with the touchpad (cursor wandering) and speed when an antivirus program was installed & running. The D610, even with A/V, loads quicker & runs faster and smoother. Internal PC card runs at 54 Mbps and picks up signals from my home router up to 300'. Battery life almost 3 hours. This is an excellent choice for those looking for a reliable traveller, for internet/email, and for word processing. Probably lacking for gamers but for the average user who wants a reliable laptop, this D610 can't be beat!
