Dyson DC17 - The best vacuum .. but for a price!

by shoplmart Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Dec 04 '04
Pros: Reliable, relatively quiet, Animal tool, It's a Dyson.
Cons: Price not for everyone, Color scheme better left for a 1965 Barracuda.
In the past I have had way too many vacuum cleaners- a vacuum hoarder if you will. It's not that I collect vacuum cleaners per say, but I have always felt that if one breaks I should have at least another five or six to fall back on. Realizing that this ...

The Dyson DC 17 Animal: Amazing Results After The First Use.

by Steelfan, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, May 04 '08
Pros: Powerful Suction, Bagless, Helps People With Allergies, Onboard Attachments and Suction Hose.
Cons: Heavy, Pricey but worth it.
After many years of denying that any vacuum could pick up all of the hair and dirt in our carpets, we finally decided to spend the money on a Dyson. Our carpets are used very hard and the combination of cat hair, dirt and dust from our pellet and coal ...

Dyson DC-17 Animal - Finally a Vacuum That Doesn't Suck

by Andyman Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, May 21 '07
Pros: Good suction, good tools, good design excellent brush. All around works well.
Cons: Trouble traversing the "lip" between uneven floor surfaces. Can't lie down and get under furniture.
So far I'm happy with my Dyson DC-17 Animal even though $500 does feel like a lot to pay. It's got powerful suction, a good design, versatile tools, and a robust brush that really gets the grit and hair out of my carpets. Let's get the bad stuff out ...

by jjsharkman , Apr 24 '09
Pros: Excellent filtration, no bags/belts/filters to buy, 5 year warranty, and well designed.
Cons: Hose can pull vacuum along, canister may have to be cleaned occasionally.
I've had this vacuum for almost a year now and thought I'd share my findings, both good and bad.  Overall, I like the design and features.  It has auto height so you don't have to guess what level your carpet is, and a button ...

by jemoiselle , Jul 07 '08
Pros: Carpet looks professionally cleaned, crisp lines, fluffed pile. Lighter than my last vac.

Impressed by a vacuum cleaner? Now this is a first.

by theostrich , Feb 01 '07
Pros: Design, suction, hidden telescoping hose, bottom-emptying collection bin, lifetime HEPA filter, NO BAGS!
Cons: Too pricey for some folks. Hose is not as flexible as I would like.

Pros: Excellent Suction, Easy to Use
Cons: Frequency of Canister Emptying, Worthless customer service.

Pros: Lots of suction
Cons: Belt for roller brush broke within a couple of months

by santiagodraco , Jul 13 '07
Pros: Powerful and consistent suction, Advanced features, Condensed design.
Cons: Expensive, No light, Somewhat firm hose.

by paoyu , Sep 22 '07
Pros: Powerful suction, no bags. An amazing feat of marketing.
Cons: One of the most over-hyped, poorly designed things in the great wide world.
I'm sure that the main reason people buy a vacuum is to clean things. Lots of reviews here praise the Dyson for it's suction power, but that is only one part of the equation. In my opinion, the Dyson fails miserably as a design for cleaning things. ...

DC17 vs DC07 - Worth an upgrade?

by cruz3 , Jan 21 '08
Pros: Powerful, on-board attachments, durable, very well designed, and 5-year warranty.
Cons: Clear plastic will dull, air powered brush is so-so.
We have had our DC07 for about 3 years and decided we were ready to upgrade. If you have researched the Dyson family of vacuums, you know that there is a price swing of over $100 between the DC07 and DC17 series. Can I say it is worth $100 more? So ...

"Dirtyness" of canister

If your pet sheds, this is for you!!

by davysmom , Jan 28 '07
Pros: suction is amazing
Cons: expensive, heavy, stair attachment completely worthless, documentation is HORRIBLE, wand is awkward to use
I am amazed that something can actually pick up the dog hair in my carpeting. We used to change the bag in our old vacuum at least 2 or 3 times a month just to keep the suction going and the smell down. I was mortified after using this the first time ...

Wow! Top notch value with this product! Manual is the easiest ever!

by simpora , Aug 28 '08
Pros:

Product quality, price vs value...and customer service, it is all superior.

Cons: you would think the cord would be retractable in this price range.
I read every review, good and bad, on the Dyson site and others before purchasing. I even called Dyson several times in one day, to ask questions, (as I read the reviews and Yes they answered everytime!) people complained about the manual being hard to ...

Unbelievably Good

by katwomanmn , Aug 19 '07
Pros: Highly efficient cleaning; easy to use; well-designed
Cons: It takes a while to get used to using the hose
I'll admit I'm a gadget geek. I've had a variety of vacuum cleaners of varying sizes and styles. The quality varied as much as the shapes, but none of them seemed to do the trick -- especially with a household of one dog, three cats and a bird. I ...

Another member for the "I Love My Dyson" family

by burnman42 , Aug 20 '07
Pros: Performance and value
Cons: I didn't own one sooner.
I did a lot of research before buying this vacuum. The biggest drawback being the price. Luckily, Kohl's had a big sale and we got a rare 30% off from their catalog promo. So we ended up getting this unit for the price of the regular upright all floors ...

Dyson is a genius, but this vacuum doesn't work

by boobynez , Jan 08 '08
Pros: Doesn't lose suction as you vacuum.
Cons: Doesn't start out with adequate suction
When I first opened the box, I was disappointed by how toy-like all the parts were. It's also very heavy, especially since my last few vacuums were Orecks. Turning in it on, it was pretty loud but not the loudest. I found it very hard to maneuver, ...

Cons: none, whatsoever.

Cons: Horrible manual, needs retractable cord

Pros: Quality on board attachments, long hose, extra long plug cord.
Cons: Two attachments not on board, hose has one part that extends to only one length.

Dyson DC17 Animal Works better than the DC14 which is phenomenal

by shafman1 , Oct 04 '07
Pros: Works great! No bags, belts, or filters to be replaced.
Cons: A retractable cord would be nice.

Cons: A bit pricey, documentation is poor, and a retractable cord should be standard.

Pros: great for cleaning up dog hair and small dirt particles
Cons: Pricy. VERY LOUD, hard to control, heavy.

Die Tumbleweeds, Die!

by noelfeliz , Jul 22 '08
Pros: Long hair (and lots of it!) is no match for this thing!
Cons: Can't think of any!
I have a large dog (a rottweiler mix), and he sheds long, black hairs all over my beige carpets all year long. It has gotten so bad that we have black tumbleweeds that blow over the tile and berber after only a week of not vacuuming. I have burned ...

In love with my Animal!

by shoppingmom122 , Jan 01 '09
Pros: Works
Suction
Colors
useful attachments
5 year warranty
Cons: Price, thought it's worth it.
Hard to get used to at first
I became sick and tired of buying an inexpensive vacuum cleaner every year. I was literally going through one sweeper each year, because of them breaking down. I decided to bite the bullet and buy a Dyson. I did my research. I talked to other people who ...

Model DC 17 Review

Pros: Really sucks up the dirt
Easy to push
Inculded all the attachments
Cons: A little pricey but well worth the investment.
I have had my Dyson DC now for a couple of weeks. My husband vacuum first with my old vacuum and we thought it was clean. My old vacuum was a Sears Kenmore Canister that I have had for about  20 years plus it's been a great vacumm but it was ...

by calimommy1211 , Jan 31 '09
Pros: -No more vaccum bags
-Eliminate alergies
-helpful attatchments for hard to get areas
Cons: -The vaccum is very expensive
-The vacuum is somewhat heavy
My husband had been suffering from terrible allergies from our cats. We really didn't want to give the cats away. So I looked into many vaccums online for a while. Our friend had a DC17 animal bagless upright cyclonic vaccum. He said it worked awesome. ...

Pros: Great vacuum
Cons: Pray you never need to have it repaired.
A great vacuum until it doesn't work. I live alone - vacuum every other week. Just within the 1 year warranty the vacuum began stalling out while in use. I called Dyson, was told it would be covered by warranty and referred to an authorized repair shop. ...

DC17

by sarglong , Dec 20 '08
Pros: It cleans WAY better than our more expensive oreck.  Easy to use and empty container.
Cons: Little heavy (just adds to cleaning power), and wand is short for a 6'3" guy.
My wife and I both have allergies that are aggravated by our two indoor dogs. We have been using our oreck for the last few years but finally got fed up with the strong dog smell emitting from the vacuum every time we used it. We spent a considerable ...

Not Worth The $$$
by jamagam ,Dec 21 '06
Pros: Powerful suction
Cons: Heavy, Akward,Price Too High
First I vacuumed with my old Eureka and then my Dyson. The Dyson did get more pet hair out of the carpet and I was happy but after using it day after day, I found using the Dyson was hard work. It's a heavy akward machine. Our home has carpet and wood floors. It did not work as well on the wood floors. I found the attatchments to be a big hassle and the design was lacking. I would not buy Dyson again, it's way over rated.

Dyson 17 leaves too many marks in thick plush carpet
by teachmath08 ,Jan 13 '07
Pros: Picks up a lot of dirt
Cons: Leaves too many deep marks
I purchased a Dyson 17 three days ago. It leaves deep marks in my plush carpet. I am not happy with the results. It might pick up more dirt but even running it without the brushes on, I cannot get rid of the marks. It looks like the carpet has been raked. I am returning to Sears where I bought it.

First vacuum and last
by baileyjk ,Apr 27 '09
Pros: The sucking power! Dyson is the first and only one I will buy.
Cons: Emptying the canister can be a little messy but don't let that stop you.
I reviewed the Dyson all over the place. I finally found this one online refurbished.  I wanted one with the ball but this one is AMAZING! I read somewhere that it started to suck up their carpet fibers. I had the same experience. I don't know a whole lot about carpet.  But I'm guessing it was picking up the loose ones.  This product also picked up dog hair that has been vacuumed over so many time and never picked up.

Do not buy if you have thick carpet
by thekevster ,Dec 14 '07
Pros: Very powerful machine that does not loose suction.
Cons: Will not work on long thick carpet. Hose attachment and wand are cumbersome to use.
This vacuum worked great on our Berber carpet. However, we just bought new very expensive California Berber which is higher and thicker carpet that feels great when you walk on it and it has a very rich look to it.
They Dyson vacuum does not have a height adjustment because it rides on top of the carpet so you don't have to bother with adjusting when you move from one surface to another. That is the problem.
This vacuum sucks itself to the carpet and wont let go!!! You can't move it! It is worthless on this type of carpet. Don't waste you $500 like we did if you have or plan to have this type of carpet.
But if you have short carpet you will love this machine.

Not worth the money
by cdegolier ,Feb 12 '07
Pros: good vacuum, comparable to Hoover Windtunnel
Cons: Pricey
Excepting my first child and living with 2 cats and a dog I thought I would test my mothers new Dyson against my 5 year Hoover Windtunnel. I first vacuumed with my Hoover and then went over the same area with the Dyson, to my amazement the Dyson picked up even more. The was shortlived though, when I vacuumed a new area with the Dyson and went over the same area with the Hoover the same thing happened more was picked up. So my husband and I decided that the $550 price tag wasn't worth it considering it didn't do any better than my old Hoover.

Both vacuums were cleaned out before and after testing.

A bit expensive, but well worth it.
by qcn88exr ,Dec 10 '06
Pros: Clean-up a breeze, Spectacular suction, useful attachments
Cons: Wish the cord was retractable.
When we built our new home we included a top of the line central vac system, within in a year the motor had burned out. We decided to spend a little more and purchase the Dyson DC17, we have no regrets. You will be amazed by the debris this machine pulls from your carpet. It leaves your floors free of even the tiniest of dust particles that can aggravate allergies and just like the commercials say, you will not loose suction. The clean-up is so easy and mess-free, it is nice to be able to see what the vacuum is actually sucking up. It comes with a variety of really useful attachments, my favorite is the stair and upholstery attachment. Yes, you are spending a little more for a vacuum, but it is well worth it to have a visibly cleaner and allergen-free home with this vacuum.

Didn't get it for the wedding, so bought it ourselves.
by zaysea997 ,Sep 21 '07
Pros: Attachments are very easy!
Cons: None, this vacuum is a dream!
I've been wanting a Dyson for a very long time. I have two dogs, and 1 long haired cat, not to mention the husband, the daughter, the younger sister and the nephew that all are contained in 1200 square feet. My Hoover Fold Away just wasn't keeping up with the mess. I have to say, it was the best money I've ever spent! It keeps up with the kids and the pets. My favorite part is the attachments, it's so nice to not have bend over and switch so many things to get on my stairs. Truly I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new vacuum. Yes it's a lot of money, but it is worth every red cent.

AMAZING!!!!!!
by pennbruins ,Dec 10 '07
Pros: great pick up, great mobility, awesome machine!
Cons: hate the purple, but some spray paint will take care of that! LOL
This vacuum is often referred to as "luxury" - that is not accurate, with a golden retreiver, german shepherd and a cat at my house it is a necessity!!!

I read the reviews and thought that upon purchase I would be impressed. The first time I used it on the same area I had just cleaned with my old vac I was absolutely amazed at how much dirt it picked up, how great the carpet looked and felt. This is the best money I have ever spent --except for my marriage license :-)

fabulous for carpet, but has a couple of drawbacks
by milnet ,Dec 13 '06
Pros: picks up hair and fine dirt like a champ
Cons: awkward on stairs and awful documentation
This vac outperforms every other vac I've ever owned, including the two Kirby's I wore out prior to buying the Dyson. It cleans carpet like nothing I've ever seen. Fine dirt and animal hair that must have eluded the Kirby's for years came up in staggering quantity on the first pass with the Dyson. It is maneuverable and very easy to push. Though light, it seems quite sturdy, unlike the Bissell steamer I had that fell apart.

After one attempt to vacuum stairs with the included attachment, I went back to my handheld. Holding the attachment at the required angle was extremely awkward, even painful. There may be a different way to set it up for this purpose, but the poor documentation makes it impossible to tell. I wouldn't recommend buying this vacuum expecting to make full use of the attachments unless the company revises the incredibly bad and incomplete documentation.

Over Priced
by cleanup1 ,Feb 07 '07
Pros: Good if picking up dust particles and dog hair
Cons: Sweeper may break if you were to suck up a dime from under something.
You are better off to by a Hoover or another brand, as the Dyson is too over priced for what you get. Wish I would have not bought it. Has great suction, but the sweeping brush head is a pathetic piece of plastic and the bristles are so stiff, they leave marks in semi-plush carpet. After vacuuming you need to go back over the carpet again with just the suction on to hopefully blend out the marks made by the sweeper rotating brushes. Used it the first week and latched on to shoe string from under the edge of the bed resulting in breaking of the belt, and who knows what else. Now taking it to the repair shop. The design is unique and modern, but do not believe it is durable.

EXCITED to vacuum
by evanic22 ,Jan 10 '07
Pros: suction, attachments, easy to empty, also cleans bare floors well, 5 year warranty
Cons: HORRIBLE documentation
Yes, I finally broke down and spent $549.00 on a Dyson DC17 Complete Animal. Was it worth it? Absolutely! I thought the Hoover I had been using was doing an okay job, but the first time I used the Dyson I was amazed at the amount of dirt and dog hair it pulled up. I was disgusted that my carpet had so much unseen dirt in it. The canister is easy to empty and it comes with numerous attachments. The attachments actually do a great job, but good luck figuring out how to use them. The documents that came in the box were so bad I had to go to the Dyson website to find out which attachment did what. If you have pets that shed, you MUST have this vacuum. It also does a great job on bare floors like tile and linoleum because the rotating brush on the bottom can be turned off so it doesn't kick dirt behind it.

Fantasmic!!!!!
by sedmiston ,Jun 17 '07
Pros: Five year warranty, bagless, washable filter, attachments work well, sucks the spots off a Dalmation.
Cons: Could use a longer hose for stairs.
My wife and I have had a Kirby Heritage 2 for over 10 years. It served us well until the motor finally died. Kirbys are very good vacuums, but they are heavy and overpriced. We purchased a Eureka ($139) 2 months before the Kirby. The Eureka not only did not work well, it broke within 2 months, hence the Kirby (I guess you get what you pay for). After reading reviews on the internet and epinions, we finally chose the Dyson DC 17 Animal. We were also looking at the Kenmore progressive 36932. We ultimately chose the Dyson because of the five year warranty, washable filter, and because everyone said it is good if you have pets. WOW.... My wife and I are truly impressed. Believe all of the reviews! It is expensive, but IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! It picked up dirt my Kirby didn't even know about! Like everyone else, I was shocked, disgusted, and amazed all at once. For what it's worth, in my opinion, if you don't want the brain damage, spend the money, buy the best, and cry only once!

Grossed out by what dyson picked up!
by momof2w3pets ,Nov 18 '08
Pros: Great suction. Easy to use.  Comes with a lot of attachments.
Cons: It's a little spendy, but with a 5 yr warranty totally worth it.
We are getting new carpet put in, and with a newborn baby not yet crawling and 3 animals I wanted a good vacuum that would pick up all the animal hair.  After researching online we decided on the Dyson animal.  I just used it today on an area rug and was totally amazed and disgusted by what the dyson picked up.  It filled the bin about halfway up with pet hair and dirt that our regular vacuum obviously missed.  I am a convert now and will never go back to a "regular" vacuum.

$549.00 VACUUM TEARS COUCH
by krauss18334 ,Mar 09 '07
Pros: good suction
Cons: sharp edges, no light, heavy, loud & way to expensive
The first time I used my new DYSON vacuum it tore my couch!! The edge of the vacuum is extremly sharp and when I got close to the couch and pulled back on the vacuum it snagged the material. I did contact Dyson and send them pictures, they just said that the vacuum needs to be defective in order for them to help me out. I don't believe the vacuum is defective, its just the way it was made. So i guess buying an expensive vacuum didn't pay off for me. The vacuum does have good pick up but thats about all. It is loud, hard to use the wand and leaves deep lines in the carpet. i do not like that there is no light either. this vacuum is going back and I will never buy another Dyson product again!!!!

This is the ONE! An Absolute Animal!
by jc2ski ,Jul 28 '07
Pros: Suction power, user friendly, low emissions, a great vacuum!
Cons: Initial cost (but no bags or filters to buy once purchased)
This vacuum is the ONE! My husband and I returned the Dyson Animal Ball DC15 due to a hideous noise! We purchased the newer Dyson Animal DC17 instead and LOVE IT! This vacuum has AMAZING power, it is user friendly, is lighter in weight than the other Dysons, and it costs $50 less than the Animal Ball. And you cannot beat the lifetime HEPA filter and the very low emissions--any vacuum that is good for the environment is good for all of us!

P.S. You can use the 20% off coupon at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and save $110.00 (we did)!

Good-bye Kirby!
by wmsd ,Feb 12 '08
Pros: really gets the pet hair, easy to use
Cons: price
Just bought this vacuum and my son immediately used it on our family room rug. I could not believe the dirt and dog hair it got up with relative ease. He then used it on the hall and another room upstairs. Anything that can get him to clean is worth its price in gold! The ultimate test was a navy blue runner that I have been trying to get the dog hairs out of. It worked better than I could imagine. My husband says it was nice to get a product that finally does exactly what it says. As to its weight...I had a Kirby! Now that was heavy, this does not compare!

Awesome Vacuum
by lnewporttx ,Jan 11 '07
Pros: Powerful, out cleaned my old vacuum
Cons: Very Pricey and a not good for shag rugs!
I just bought this Dyson and on the first night I vacuumed like normal using my old vacuum (Dirt Devil Platinum Force with HEPA filter) then I used the Dyson. I was amazed about the amount of dirt the Dyson vacuum managed to pick up.

The Dyson is a bit heavy but using it is a breeze, I swear it seems to be self-propelled because my old vacuum was harder to push and pull than the Dyson was. It is not overly loud but when you turn it on you can really hear how more powerful it is.

I did discover a problem with it however and it is with my shag rug. The Dyson has some very, very stiff brushes on its rollers which I think is one reason why it picks up hair so well. Well I have a red, shag rug in the middle of my room and I used the Dyson to vacuum it and the Dyson’s stiff brushes managed to pull up lots of fibers from my shag rug. I have found I can vacuum without the brushes going so that maybe my solution for now.

Cleaning queen is disappointed
by jadigirl ,Nov 28 '07
Pros: Great suction and machine sits securely as you vacuum up steps with the retractable hose.
Cons: This vacuum cleaner should have included a retractable cord and a head light.
This vacuum does clean very well but could benefit from some design improvements.

For $500 it should feature a retractable cord and a headlight. Within the first 15 months of ownership I had a brush head break plus its replacement. Additionally, the waste canister broke and was expensive to replace. I find it difficult to keep the waste canister cleaned out properly. The button to release the retractable hose is quite stubborn and requires brute hand strength. Lastly, the pet turbo hand attachment will not stay secured when vacuuming steps.

The Dyson DC17 First Time Use Feedback
by cotandem ,Jul 21 '08
Pros: Cleans carpet like no other, useful for all surfaces, super powerful
Cons: Heavy, costly, takes getting used to from previous vacuum cleaners, useless owners manual
Used our new Dyson DC17 for the first time last night. I found the results, in a word, amazing! I had just vacuumed three days ago with our Eureka which we have been using for 2 years. Always thought it did a decent job. But after using the Dyson it is clear I thought wrong. It is just my wife and me, and two cats. We are clean people. The Dyson tells me our cats shed a lot that was not being picked up before. Plus I like the ability to go from carpet to tile floor by simply turning off the rolling brush feature. Out of the box, it looks like no other vacuum cleaner I have used. In fact, a bit intimidating at first. I doubt my older parents would have the patience to figure it out. The owners manual is good for the pictures only. Online is no better. Still not sure of the use of the attachments, or if I really will use them/need them. But again, my first impressions are really strong. Appears to be worth the money (a lot).

Thank You Mr. Dyson!!!!
by urbaita ,Jan 21 '07
Pros: Lots of attachments / extras New 5 Year Warranty Performance is unmatched
Cons: Attachment holder on vacuum can be tricky
Everything they say here is true. I replaced my old Hoover Windtunnel (which Consumer Reports still rates higher than the Dyson... ignore them) and was amazed at how much more dirt this thing picks up. You will not believe it until you try it. Its also much easier to push around than the old one.

I am a guy and USED to hate to vacuum... that should be the marketing line - my GF has yet to use it because I am vacuuming all the time now...

Even the Dyzorb carpet cleaning powder worked great on high traffic areas.

Buy it and you will not regret it. Its expensive but totally worth it.

Dyson Animal 17
by brix92 ,Aug 31 '08
Pros: Picks up pet hair
Cons: Heavy, the cord gets in the way, lost suction!
Very disappointed! What a load of hype over not that much. I was so excited to get it home and was quickly let down. I currently have 3 dogs and 2 cats and a lot of pet hair. So, when I read about this vacuum made especially for pet owners, I was beside myself with excitement. WOW! I just wasn't thrilled nor impressed with the job it did at all. I just don't think it's worth the money. If it truly was going to be the king of all vacuums and last me till eternity, then it would have been worth the $$.

Other than one rude person on the customer service end, the ones I spoke with were very helpful but I didn't get the feeling that they truly knew about any of the Dyson products.

Hate it
by malibuhanson ,Mar 31 '08
Pros: None
Cons: Very expensive, disappointing suction, difficult to use.
I hate my Dyson vacuum and feel like an idiot for spending so much on such a disappointing product. I was fooled by the ads. I wish I had my old vacuum back. The suction is disappointing especially on wood floors. I have to go over spots several times to pick up visible dust and dirt. The attachments are awkward and don't really work. To remove the hose for attachments is always difficult and time consuming. Handle on hose is very awkward. Just not a user friendly vacuum. I would recommend buying anything other than this product.

Thank you for a good product
by nomoreideas000 ,Apr 04 '07
Pros: attachments easy to use canister easy to clean less noisy than the Kirby
Cons: At this point I have not found any cons to the Dyson DC17.
I just purchased a DC17 Dyson vacuum and was thrilled with the performance and the ease of using it.

After using my Kirby for 12 years, it finally lost its suction. I thought I had a clean house until I ran the Dyson DC17 over my 10'X16' living room. The canister filled very quickly with dog hair and dust and lint. I ended up emptying the canister twice after cleaning that one room.

As far a cost goes, the Kirby had a $800.00 price tag. Although I used it for 12 years, it really didn't clean that well after about 8 years. I paid $549.00 for the DC17 and I think it was a good decision.

It is much easier to control than the Kirby. It is not as heavy, and the attachments are easy to use. I would definitely recommend the Dyson vacuum to anyone who wants quality.

got this once and for all
by cyclee ,Nov 22 '07
Pros: great suction, easy to carry, relatively quiet for such a powerful tool.
Cons: power cord tends to get in the way
With 3 pets in the house, this is the vacuum we decided on. It was pricey but we wanted to do it right once and for all, and never to complain about the vacuums that don't suck anymore (we all have too many of those). Well, it definitely didn't disappoint. It didn't come with very much instructions but I found it quite easy to figure out what goes where. After vacuuming, the carpet feels soft and fluff and definitely cleaner than ever. I even carried this vacuum up and down the stairs several times with ease. The canister has small capacity but I find the emptying quite simple, so it really isn't a problem. The only thing that can be improved on is adding the retractable cords. It can be winded on the back of the vacuum but it tends to unwind itself while vacuuming, and gets in the way. Other than that, it's worth every penny we spend and I definitely will not go for anything less good after my experience with this Animal!

great on terrazzo tile
by zzmollie ,Oct 18 '07
Pros: great suction, hair removal,no flying dirt particles
Cons: none
I bought the dc17 animal. High priced but well worth it. I have terrazzo tile floors downstairs and it worked so well. Usually when you vacuum you will feel the dirt particles blowing back at your feet, but not with this Dyson. This really impressed me! I like where the electrical cord is placed on the body of the vacuum near the top; it doesn't get in the way like other cords placed at the bottom of the body. I have 4 dogs and 2 cats and it is as all the other reviews say, it picks up the hair. There will always be a bad review, but just look at all of the good ones. The great reviews outnumber the bad. You will be very pleased. It is a little heavy carrying up the stairs, but it is heavy plastic, what do you expect!

by bcald7 ,Apr 02 '07
Pros: Powerful-n-easy to move on deep carpet. Easy empty, auto height adjustment is great. Glides smooth.
Cons: Documentation is vague, online registration odd, no complaints with the vac .
Great suction, and very powerful. It's heavy but easy to wield. I have 2 dogs and 1 (had 2) cat and deep carpeting. I've gone through 5 vacuums in the last 7 years including a Kirby and Electrolux. I was always eying the Dyson and trying to convince my wife that spending the extra cash may be worth it in the long run. Well we'll see in time if I was right. The 5 year warranty is comforting. So far so good though.

This vac may be heavy to carry from room to room, but it glides during operation. It takes less muscle to push than my old vac. This may be due to the auto height adjustment feature. I haven't had time to try the gadgets that came with the DC17 so I can't review them.

Note to all that are complaining they have to empty the canister too often... That means it's working. It's not a negative. It means your old vac wasn't powerful enough to fill the bag/canister as quickly.

Dyson Dogs It
by abbraxxes ,Nov 08 '07
Pros: powerful suction
Cons: awkward, heavy, problematic, expensive
We bought the Dyson because of its powerful suction ability, which we thought would help clean up our dog's shedding hair. And it did. But that is the only good thing I have to say about this vacuum. It is heavy and difficult to use. Dyson advertising would have you believe that there are no filters but there is a filter you have to wash and dry at least every four months. You also have to clean the shroud several times a year. And you have to empty bin far more frequently than you ever have to change bags on a traditional vacuum. Its a pain in the neck. And now after little more than a year it has lost most of its suction ability and I have to have it repaired. Do yourself a favor and do not waste your money.

DC17 Animal eating my floor SERIOUSLY
by mom43 ,Sep 01 '08
Pros:

Works nice on carpets

Cons: The front rollers eat vinyl flooring while turning/moving

First off ---I need to say up until today I loved this vacuum. It is great on my carpeting. We have been noticing 1/8 inch cut marks on our new top of the line vinyl flooring (this is not linoleum) and my hardwood floor but unsure of the cause. UNTIL, yesterday. I was vacuuming, without the beater brush running and two more cut marks appeared. My husband quickly turned over the machine and started looking and measuring. There are two very small rollers on the base of the vacuum. During vacuuming when the machine is being used and moved back and forth they have been cutting my floor which is less than 1 year old (along with the vacuum, less than 1 year old).

This was instantly reported to Dyson and we are awaiting a phone call back from someone higher up.

Has anyone else ever had this type of problem in their home? If so, please be in touch with me.

Thank you.
Kim

Dyson Vacuum DC17 clumsy and heavy, dirty to empty and other negatives
by bluesgal1 ,Jul 01 '09
Pros: The pros for this vacuum are the colors purple and smoke gray.
Cons: I would steer clear of this thing unless you like heavy plastics!
This is the worse handling vacuum I've ever had.
It had no pedal to push on and off, you have to reach your foot around the front.
The booklet didn't describe how to pull the tool handle out. When using the tools, the plastic tube bends and cuts off the suction so you have to lean the vacuum down so that doesn't happen.
Emptying this thing is extremely unsanitary and disgusting. No matter how careful you are, the dust poofs up and you breathe it in. Any bacteria are now in your lungs!
In the plastic canister, large clumps of dust gets stuck between the all those tiny holes (have you noticed?) You have to use a swiffer or long stick to dislodge them. This should not happen.
You have to empty the vacuum at least 3 times (if you have pet hair around) which is annoying especially if you have long hair breeds like Golden Retrievers.
Sorry, but I hate this thing and will never buy a Dyson, again.
Any vacuum without bags is not a money saver. You'll be buying filters instead which are equal in cost to bags for 6 months.
It's all hype. I'm back to using my Hoover Windtunnel WITH Hepa BAGS.

Surprised!
by marlab412 ,Feb 26 '08
Pros: Awesome suction, many tools, feels self propelled, easy emptying canister, never have to replace filter
Cons: exstension tool wand stiff and hard to manuever
I love my new Dyson. I knew my vacuum (Dirt devil) wasn't the best but I vacuumed this morning with it and then with my new Dyson. I could not believe how much I still picked up with the Dyson. It filled up the whole canister after I was done with my whole house! The suction is amazing!
The only complaint I have really is the wand. It is really hard to get it off to use and then it is really stiff and hard to manuever. I used it on my stairs and realized I had muscles that I didn't know existed! I do like how I can leave it at the bottom of the stairs though, and still reach the top(barely).
Anyway, overall, I think it is money well spent. My 3 cats and 2 small children leave hair and mess everywhere and the dyson is wonderful in helping me keep my carpets clean and for me, allergy free, since I am allergic to my own cats!

Did you clean the filter yet?
by jfasching ,Aug 26 '07
Pros: Excellent in picking up animal hair
Cons: Hose is awkward to use. Plus see my review
So sorry I wasted the money on this much hyped vacuum cleaner. While it does an excellent job picking up animal hair, beware of anything else that might be on your carpet. This will be the 3rd time to the repair shop for this vac. The beater brush has stopped working again. Believe me I do not abuse this vac. The brush just stops working. The first time they replaced the belt because the company found the first to be insufficient. I am not sure why it stopped working the next 2 times, but I have had it. Also beware when you clean the filter. Instructions tell you to soak it in cold water for 3 minutes then run under cold water and squeeze until the water is clear. My whole bathroom was covered in "black soot". I am still coughing up black "stuff". I followed the directions and cannot believe this "soot" became airborne while in water. Believe me it did. Enclosed directions are poor. The wand is awkward to use. I emailed Dyson for my money back. I am calling the store I bought it at to return.

The Proof is in the Canister!
by fabermn ,Jun 12 '08
Pros: Excellent Suction, no bags, washable filter, easy setup, it CLEANS
Cons: Heavy - pricey
I can't even begin to tell you how much I am already in love with this vacuum cleaner - and I just bought it yesterday! I have only vacuumed one room so far and just had to get on line and write a review. After a very quick and pain free set up I have put this "animal" to the test and it has far exceeded my expectations. I was very leary about spending the $$ but after going through Windtunnel after Windtunnel I said enough was enough. This Dyson DC17 Absoulte Animal ROCKS! And to think my cleaning people, who come every two weeks were here, not kidding, yesterday, the canister is FULL of dirt and pet hair - AMAZING. With 3 boys, a dog and a husband who trek in dirt all the time, this vacuum is going to get a workout and I am happy to say that I am glad to have spent the extra $ and am pleased to see that despite it being in use for 1/2 an hour - it has surpassed and outperformed my skeptisims! Go get yourself one!!!

I Love My Dyson DC 17 Animal!!!
by possielou ,Nov 01 '08
Pros: Great suction, beating action, tool convenience, ease of emptying the debris container.
Cons: The only way it could be better is if it ran and emptied itself!! :)
I have had my Dyson for 2 months.  It is the best vacuum that I have ever had.  I have had the more expensive vacuums and they didn't compare.
I have a dog that sheds and I use the machine, daily.  Before when I  vacuumed, I thought that I was being thorough.  I didn't have any idea how much debris that I was leaving.
My close friend has a rather new Oreck.  She paid a couple of hundred dollars more than I did.  She vacuumed her living room to her satisfaction.  I then went over it with my "Animal."  I got a container full of dog hair and dirt.  She was amazed, and angry!!  :)
I should be receiving a commission for selling the machines!!
I bought my Dyson DC-17 online from Home Depot.  This machine is my new best friend!!

Piece of Junk Don't BUY
by onemoretime2 ,Feb 04 '09
Pros: Good internet hype, great marketing.
Cons: Costly, upper cyclone chamber CANNOT be opened for cleaning.
I own this thing, its about a year old and its having its motor replaced right now.  Here's the problem with this vacuum.  Its sold as for use with pets, yet the whole part of the upper cyclone chamber CANNNOT be opened up and cleared of debris.  I spent hours running water through it to try and get the cat hair completely out of the upper chamber and there is NO getting it all out.  Also, there is a filter in the motor assembly that cannot be cleaned without disassembling the motor housing and it costs 40 bucks.  I'm paying for one of those, though Dyson is paying for the motor.  The repair guy where I took it (A Dyson authorized Repair Shop) told me they DON'T recommend them because they don't hold up, the cyclone chamber CANNOT be cleaned and they are over priced.  If you don't believe me at least do this, call a vacuum service place that services them and ask them, "Hey what do you think of the Dyson DC-17).  The shop I went to had about 6 of em sitting waiting repair for a lot of the same issues I have.

I'm Sold
by kokopelli80 ,Jan 06 '08
Pros: Great suction, long cord, easy to empty canister, quiet, great attachments, ONE FILTER FOREVER!!
Cons: Not sure if I like how the attachments attach, but I'll get over it.
Great Suction! Made my carpets look new again. I couldn't believe what my old vacuum was leaving behind. I also love the mini turbine head, I've never had anything that would take the cat hair off of my couch so well. It was a bit spendy, but if I take into consideration how many vacuums, bags, and filters I've purchased in the last 10 years this will pay for itself in no time. Take it from me I have 3 cats and a two year old, you can't go wrong.

Don't Buy IT !!!!
by trish429 ,Aug 31 '09
Pros: Vacuum works great when it works.
Cons: Customer Service Dept.
After owning this vacuum for 6 monthes the rotating motor broke. I have been waiting 4 weeks for the return of my vacuum. After numerous problems with the factory service and the repair shop I am still waiting for the motor to appear at the service center. Dyson says it was shipped two weeks ago. Unfortunately the customer service dept has no way of contacting their parts dept (believe it or not). I will never buy another Dyson again.
