Dyson Animal 17
by brix92 ,Aug 31 '08
Pros: Picks up pet hair Cons: Heavy, the cord gets in the way, lost suction!
Very disappointed! What a load of hype over not that much. I was so excited to get it home and was quickly let down. I currently have 3 dogs and 2 cats and a lot of pet hair. So, when I read about this vacuum made especially for pet owners, I was beside myself with excitement. WOW! I just wasn't thrilled nor impressed with the job it did at all. I just don't think it's worth the money. If it truly was going to be the king of all vacuums and last me till eternity, then it would have been worth the $$.
Other than one rude person on the customer service end, the ones I spoke with were very helpful but I didn't get the feeling that they truly knew about any of the Dyson products.

DC17 Animal eating my floor SERIOUSLY
by mom43 ,Sep 01 '08
Pros: Works nice on carpets Cons: The front rollers eat vinyl flooring while turning/moving
First off ---I need to say up until today I loved this vacuum. It is great on my carpeting. We have been noticing 1/8 inch cut marks on our new top of the line vinyl flooring (this is not linoleum) and my hardwood floor but unsure of the cause. UNTIL, yesterday. I was vacuuming, without the beater brush running and two more cut marks appeared. My husband quickly turned over the machine and started looking and measuring. There are two very small rollers on the base of the vacuum. During vacuuming when the machine is being used and moved back and forth they have been cutting my floor which is less than 1 year old (along with the vacuum, less than 1 year old).
This was instantly reported to Dyson and we are awaiting a phone call back from someone higher up.
Has anyone else ever had this type of problem in their home? If so, please be in touch with me.
Thank you. Kim

Not worth the money
by cdegolier ,Feb 12 '07
Pros: good vacuum, comparable to Hoover Windtunnel Cons: Pricey
Excepting my first child and living with 2 cats and a dog I thought I would test my mothers new Dyson against my 5 year Hoover Windtunnel. I first vacuumed with my Hoover and then went over the same area with the Dyson, to my amazement the Dyson picked up even more. The was shortlived though, when I vacuumed a new area with the Dyson and went over the same area with the Hoover the same thing happened more was picked up. So my husband and I decided that the $550 price tag wasn't worth it considering it didn't do any better than my old Hoover.
Both vacuums were cleaned out before and after testing.

Cleaning queen is disappointed
by jadigirl ,Nov 28 '07
Pros: Great suction and machine sits securely as you vacuum up steps with the retractable hose. Cons: This vacuum cleaner should have included a retractable cord and a head light.
This vacuum does clean very well but could benefit from some design improvements.
For $500 it should feature a retractable cord and a headlight. Within the first 15 months of ownership I had a brush head break plus its replacement. Additionally, the waste canister broke and was expensive to replace. I find it difficult to keep the waste canister cleaned out properly. The button to release the retractable hose is quite stubborn and requires brute hand strength. Lastly, the pet turbo hand attachment will not stay secured when vacuuming steps.

Dyson 17 leaves too many marks in thick plush carpet
by teachmath08 ,Jan 13 '07
Pros: Picks up a lot of dirt Cons: Leaves too many deep marks
I purchased a Dyson 17 three days ago. It leaves deep marks in my plush carpet. I am not happy with the results. It might pick up more dirt but even running it without the brushes on, I cannot get rid of the marks. It looks like the carpet has been raked. I am returning to Sears where I bought it.

Over Priced
by cleanup1 ,Feb 07 '07
Pros: Good if picking up dust particles and dog hair Cons: Sweeper may break if you were to suck up a dime from under something.
You are better off to by a Hoover or another brand, as the Dyson is too over priced for what you get. Wish I would have not bought it. Has great suction, but the sweeping brush head is a pathetic piece of plastic and the bristles are so stiff, they leave marks in semi-plush carpet. After vacuuming you need to go back over the carpet again with just the suction on to hopefully blend out the marks made by the sweeper rotating brushes. Used it the first week and latched on to shoe string from under the edge of the bed resulting in breaking of the belt, and who knows what else. Now taking it to the repair shop. The design is unique and modern, but do not believe it is durable.

Not Worth The $$$
by jamagam ,Dec 21 '06
Pros: Powerful suction Cons: Heavy, Akward,Price Too High
First I vacuumed with my old Eureka and then my Dyson. The Dyson did get more pet hair out of the carpet and I was happy but after using it day after day, I found using the Dyson was hard work. It's a heavy akward machine. Our home has carpet and wood floors. It did not work as well on the wood floors. I found the attatchments to be a big hassle and the design was lacking. I would not buy Dyson again, it's way over rated.

$549.00 VACUUM TEARS COUCH
by krauss18334 ,Mar 09 '07
Pros: good suction Cons: sharp edges, no light, heavy, loud & way to expensive
The first time I used my new DYSON vacuum it tore my couch!! The edge of the vacuum is extremly sharp and when I got close to the couch and pulled back on the vacuum it snagged the material. I did contact Dyson and send them pictures, they just said that the vacuum needs to be defective in order for them to help me out. I don't believe the vacuum is defective, its just the way it was made. So i guess buying an expensive vacuum didn't pay off for me. The vacuum does have good pick up but thats about all. It is loud, hard to use the wand and leaves deep lines in the carpet. i do not like that there is no light either. this vacuum is going back and I will never buy another Dyson product again!!!!

Piece of Junk Don't BUY
by onemoretime2 ,Feb 04 '09
Pros: Good internet hype, great marketing. Cons: Costly, upper cyclone chamber CANNOT be opened for cleaning.
I own this thing, its about a year old and its having its motor replaced right now. Here's the problem with this vacuum. Its sold as for use with pets, yet the whole part of the upper cyclone chamber CANNNOT be opened up and cleared of debris. I spent hours running water through it to try and get the cat hair completely out of the upper chamber and there is NO getting it all out. Also, there is a filter in the motor assembly that cannot be cleaned without disassembling the motor housing and it costs 40 bucks. I'm paying for one of those, though Dyson is paying for the motor. The repair guy where I took it (A Dyson authorized Repair Shop) told me they DON'T recommend them because they don't hold up, the cyclone chamber CANNOT be cleaned and they are over priced. If you don't believe me at least do this, call a vacuum service place that services them and ask them, "Hey what do you think of the Dyson DC-17). The shop I went to had about 6 of em sitting waiting repair for a lot of the same issues I have.

by drrtx ,Feb 24 '08
Pros: Worked good, when new..... Cons: You name it !!!!!
This is one of the WORST vacuums I have ever owned ! I regret spending the extra bucks for it !! I've had the machine for only a couple of years, and it won't pick up a THING !!!! It will cost as much to have it repaired, as it will to get a new vacuum.....but NOT another Dyson !!!!

Don't Buy IT !!!!
by trish429 ,Aug 31 '09
Pros: Vacuum works great when it works. Cons: Customer Service Dept.
After owning this vacuum for 6 monthes the rotating motor broke. I have been waiting 4 weeks for the return of my vacuum. After numerous problems with the factory service and the repair shop I am still waiting for the motor to appear at the service center. Dyson says it was shipped two weeks ago. Unfortunately the customer service dept has no way of contacting their parts dept (believe it or not). I will never buy another Dyson again.

Dyson Dogs It
by abbraxxes ,Nov 08 '07
Pros: powerful suction Cons: awkward, heavy, problematic, expensive
We bought the Dyson because of its powerful suction ability, which we thought would help clean up our dog's shedding hair. And it did. But that is the only good thing I have to say about this vacuum. It is heavy and difficult to use. Dyson advertising would have you believe that there are no filters but there is a filter you have to wash and dry at least every four months. You also have to clean the shroud several times a year. And you have to empty bin far more frequently than you ever have to change bags on a traditional vacuum. Its a pain in the neck. And now after little more than a year it has lost most of its suction ability and I have to have it repaired. Do yourself a favor and do not waste your money.

Hate it
by malibuhanson ,Mar 31 '08
Pros: None Cons: Very expensive, disappointing suction, difficult to use.
I hate my Dyson vacuum and feel like an idiot for spending so much on such a disappointing product. I was fooled by the ads. I wish I had my old vacuum back. The suction is disappointing especially on wood floors. I have to go over spots several times to pick up visible dust and dirt. The attachments are awkward and don't really work. To remove the hose for attachments is always difficult and time consuming. Handle on hose is very awkward. Just not a user friendly vacuum. I would recommend buying anything other than this product.
