The Dyson DC17 First Time Use Feedback
by cotandem ,Jul 21 '08
Pros: Cleans carpet like no other, useful for all surfaces, super powerful Cons: Heavy, costly, takes getting used to from previous vacuum cleaners, useless owners manual
Used our new Dyson DC17 for the first time last night. I found the results, in a word, amazing! I had just vacuumed three days ago with our Eureka which we have been using for 2 years. Always thought it did a decent job. But after using the Dyson it is clear I thought wrong. It is just my wife and me, and two cats. We are clean people. The Dyson tells me our cats shed a lot that was not being picked up before. Plus I like the ability to go from carpet to tile floor by simply turning off the rolling brush feature. Out of the box, it looks like no other vacuum cleaner I have used. In fact, a bit intimidating at first. I doubt my older parents would have the patience to figure it out. The owners manual is good for the pictures only. Online is no better. Still not sure of the use of the attachments, or if I really will use them/need them. But again, my first impressions are really strong. Appears to be worth the money (a lot).

Thank You Mr. Dyson!!!!
by urbaita ,Jan 21 '07
Pros: Lots of attachments / extras
New 5 Year Warranty
Performance is unmatched Cons: Attachment holder on vacuum can be tricky
Everything they say here is true. I replaced my old Hoover Windtunnel (which Consumer Reports still rates higher than the Dyson... ignore them) and was amazed at how much more dirt this thing picks up. You will not believe it until you try it. Its also much easier to push around than the old one.
I am a guy and USED to hate to vacuum... that should be the marketing line - my GF has yet to use it because I am vacuuming all the time now...
Even the Dyzorb carpet cleaning powder worked great on high traffic areas.
Buy it and you will not regret it. Its expensive but totally worth it.

First vacuum and last
by baileyjk ,Apr 27 '09
Pros: The sucking power! Dyson is the first and only one I will buy. Cons: Emptying the canister can be a little messy but don't let that stop you.
I reviewed the Dyson all over the place. I finally found this one online refurbished. I wanted one with the ball but this one is AMAZING! I read somewhere that it started to suck up their carpet fibers. I had the same experience. I don't know a whole lot about carpet. But I'm guessing it was picking up the loose ones. This product also picked up dog hair that has been vacuumed over so many time and never picked up.

got this once and for all
by cyclee ,Nov 22 '07
Pros: great suction, easy to carry, relatively quiet for such a powerful tool. Cons: power cord tends to get in the way
With 3 pets in the house, this is the vacuum we decided on. It was pricey but we wanted to do it right once and for all, and never to complain about the vacuums that don't suck anymore (we all have too many of those). Well, it definitely didn't disappoint. It didn't come with very much instructions but I found it quite easy to figure out what goes where. After vacuuming, the carpet feels soft and fluff and definitely cleaner than ever. I even carried this vacuum up and down the stairs several times with ease. The canister has small capacity but I find the emptying quite simple, so it really isn't a problem. The only thing that can be improved on is adding the retractable cords. It can be winded on the back of the vacuum but it tends to unwind itself while vacuuming, and gets in the way. Other than that, it's worth every penny we spend and I definitely will not go for anything less good after my experience with this Animal!

great on terrazzo tile
by zzmollie ,Oct 18 '07
Pros: great suction, hair removal,no flying dirt particles Cons: none
I bought the dc17 animal. High priced but well worth it. I have terrazzo tile floors downstairs and it worked so well. Usually when you vacuum you will feel the dirt particles blowing back at your feet, but not with this Dyson. This really impressed me! I like where the electrical cord is placed on the body of the vacuum near the top; it doesn't get in the way like other cords placed at the bottom of the body. I have 4 dogs and 2 cats and it is as all the other reviews say, it picks up the hair. There will always be a bad review, but just look at all of the good ones. The great reviews outnumber the bad. You will be very pleased. It is a little heavy carrying up the stairs, but it is heavy plastic, what do you expect!

The Proof is in the Canister!
by fabermn ,Jun 12 '08
Pros: Excellent Suction, no bags, washable filter, easy setup, it CLEANS Cons: Heavy - pricey
I can't even begin to tell you how much I am already in love with this vacuum cleaner - and I just bought it yesterday! I have only vacuumed one room so far and just had to get on line and write a review. After a very quick and pain free set up I have put this "animal" to the test and it has far exceeded my expectations. I was very leary about spending the $$ but after going through Windtunnel after Windtunnel I said enough was enough. This Dyson DC17 Absoulte Animal ROCKS! And to think my cleaning people, who come every two weeks were here, not kidding, yesterday, the canister is FULL of dirt and pet hair - AMAZING. With 3 boys, a dog and a husband who trek in dirt all the time, this vacuum is going to get a workout and I am happy to say that I am glad to have spent the extra $ and am pleased to see that despite it being in use for 1/2 an hour - it has surpassed and outperformed my skeptisims! Go get yourself one!!!

Fantasmic!!!!!
by sedmiston ,Jun 17 '07
Pros: Five year warranty, bagless, washable filter, attachments work well, sucks the spots off a Dalmation. Cons: Could use a longer hose for stairs.
My wife and I have had a Kirby Heritage 2 for over 10 years. It served us well until the motor finally died. Kirbys are very good vacuums, but they are heavy and overpriced. We purchased a Eureka ($139) 2 months before the Kirby. The Eureka not only did not work well, it broke within 2 months, hence the Kirby (I guess you get what you pay for). After reading reviews on the internet and epinions, we finally chose the Dyson DC 17 Animal. We were also looking at the Kenmore progressive 36932. We ultimately chose the Dyson because of the five year warranty, washable filter, and because everyone said it is good if you have pets. WOW.... My wife and I are truly impressed. Believe all of the reviews! It is expensive, but IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! It picked up dirt my Kirby didn't even know about! Like everyone else, I was shocked, disgusted, and amazed all at once. For what it's worth, in my opinion, if you don't want the brain damage, spend the money, buy the best, and cry only once!

fabulous for carpet, but has a couple of drawbacks
by milnet ,Dec 13 '06
Pros: picks up hair and fine dirt like a champ Cons: awkward on stairs and awful documentation
This vac outperforms every other vac I've ever owned, including the two Kirby's I wore out prior to buying the Dyson. It cleans carpet like nothing I've ever seen. Fine dirt and animal hair that must have eluded the Kirby's for years came up in staggering quantity on the first pass with the Dyson. It is maneuverable and very easy to push. Though light, it seems quite sturdy, unlike the Bissell steamer I had that fell apart.
After one attempt to vacuum stairs with the included attachment, I went back to my handheld. Holding the attachment at the required angle was extremely awkward, even painful. There may be a different way to set it up for this purpose, but the poor documentation makes it impossible to tell. I wouldn't recommend buying this vacuum expecting to make full use of the attachments unless the company revises the incredibly bad and incomplete documentation.

This vacuum sucks! So far so good..
by bcald7 ,Apr 02 '07
Pros: Powerful-n-easy to move on deep carpet. Easy empty, auto height adjustment is great. Glides smooth. Cons: Documentation is vague, online registration odd, no complaints with the vac .
Great suction, and very powerful. It's heavy but easy to wield. I have 2 dogs and 1 (had 2) cat and deep carpeting. I've gone through 5 vacuums in the last 7 years including a Kirby and Electrolux. I was always eying the Dyson and trying to convince my wife that spending the extra cash may be worth it in the long run. Well we'll see in time if I was right. The 5 year warranty is comforting. So far so good though.
This vac may be heavy to carry from room to room, but it glides during operation. It takes less muscle to push than my old vac. This may be due to the auto height adjustment feature. I haven't had time to try the gadgets that came with the DC17 so I can't review them.
Note to all that are complaining they have to empty the canister too often... That means it's working. It's not a negative. It means your old vac wasn't powerful enough to fill the bag/canister as quickly.

Do not buy if you have thick carpet
by thekevster ,Dec 14 '07
Pros: Very powerful machine that does not loose suction. Cons: Will not work on long thick carpet. Hose attachment and wand are cumbersome to use.
This vacuum worked great on our Berber carpet. However, we just bought new very expensive California Berber which is higher and thicker carpet that feels great when you walk on it and it has a very rich look to it.
They Dyson vacuum does not have a height adjustment because it rides on top of the carpet so you don't have to bother with adjusting when you move from one surface to another. That is the problem.
This vacuum sucks itself to the carpet and wont let go!!! You can't move it! It is worthless on this type of carpet. Don't waste you $500 like we did if you have or plan to have this type of carpet.
But if you have short carpet you will love this machine.

Surprised!
by marlab412 ,Feb 26 '08
Pros: Awesome suction, many tools, feels self propelled, easy emptying canister, never have to replace filter Cons: exstension tool wand stiff and hard to manuever
I love my new Dyson. I knew my vacuum (Dirt devil) wasn't the best but I vacuumed this morning with it and then with my new Dyson. I could not believe how much I still picked up with the Dyson. It filled up the whole canister after I was done with my whole house! The suction is amazing!
The only complaint I have really is the wand. It is really hard to get it off to use and then it is really stiff and hard to manuever. I used it on my stairs and realized I had muscles that I didn't know existed! I do like how I can leave it at the bottom of the stairs though, and still reach the top(barely).
Anyway, overall, I think it is money well spent. My 3 cats and 2 small children leave hair and mess everywhere and the dyson is wonderful in helping me keep my carpets clean and for me, allergy free, since I am allergic to my own cats!

Dyson Animal 17
by brix92 ,Aug 31 '08
Pros: Picks up pet hair Cons: Heavy, the cord gets in the way, lost suction!
Very disappointed! What a load of hype over not that much. I was so excited to get it home and was quickly let down. I currently have 3 dogs and 2 cats and a lot of pet hair. So, when I read about this vacuum made especially for pet owners, I was beside myself with excitement. WOW! I just wasn't thrilled nor impressed with the job it did at all. I just don't think it's worth the money. If it truly was going to be the king of all vacuums and last me till eternity, then it would have been worth the $$.
Other than one rude person on the customer service end, the ones I spoke with were very helpful but I didn't get the feeling that they truly knew about any of the Dyson products.

Not worth the money
by cdegolier ,Feb 12 '07
Pros: good vacuum, comparable to Hoover Windtunnel Cons: Pricey
Excepting my first child and living with 2 cats and a dog I thought I would test my mothers new Dyson against my 5 year Hoover Windtunnel. I first vacuumed with my Hoover and then went over the same area with the Dyson, to my amazement the Dyson picked up even more. The was shortlived though, when I vacuumed a new area with the Dyson and went over the same area with the Hoover the same thing happened more was picked up. So my husband and I decided that the $550 price tag wasn't worth it considering it didn't do any better than my old Hoover.
Both vacuums were cleaned out before and after testing.

DC17 Animal eating my floor SERIOUSLY
by mom43 ,Sep 01 '08
Pros: Works nice on carpets Cons: The front rollers eat vinyl flooring while turning/moving
First off ---I need to say up until today I loved this vacuum. It is great on my carpeting. We have been noticing 1/8 inch cut marks on our new top of the line vinyl flooring (this is not linoleum) and my hardwood floor but unsure of the cause. UNTIL, yesterday. I was vacuuming, without the beater brush running and two more cut marks appeared. My husband quickly turned over the machine and started looking and measuring. There are two very small rollers on the base of the vacuum. During vacuuming when the machine is being used and moved back and forth they have been cutting my floor which is less than 1 year old (along with the vacuum, less than 1 year old).
This was instantly reported to Dyson and we are awaiting a phone call back from someone higher up.
Has anyone else ever had this type of problem in their home? If so, please be in touch with me.
Thank you. Kim

Dyson 17 leaves too many marks in thick plush carpet
by teachmath08 ,Jan 13 '07
Pros: Picks up a lot of dirt Cons: Leaves too many deep marks
I purchased a Dyson 17 three days ago. It leaves deep marks in my plush carpet. I am not happy with the results. It might pick up more dirt but even running it without the brushes on, I cannot get rid of the marks. It looks like the carpet has been raked. I am returning to Sears where I bought it.
