  Earth Abides "Re-Write Write-Off"

by sleeper54 sleeper54 is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Apr 17 '03
Pros: My personal page-turner for 20-plus years.
Cons: Somewhat dated (but is that bad?)
"As for man, there is little reason to think that he can in the long run escape the fate
of other creatures, and if there is a biological law of flux and reflex, his situation is
now a highly perilous one. During ten thousand...

Earth Abides: Stewart Predicts The End of Humankind

by lambchops Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, May 30 '02
Pros: Lovely prose with round characters and thought-provoking situation;
Cons: Lacks violence. Other better books of similar nature;

Earth Abides: But you may wish it hadn't.

by tomgray , Sep 28 '01
Pros: Thoughtful, detailed portrait of one possible future.
Cons: Constantly downbeat tone eventually becomes tiring.

Earth Abides by George Stewart

by snpmurray Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Aug 10 '01
Pros: Massive sweeping "what if...?" tale of Earth after our civilisation is gone, works superbly
Cons: Could have made an excellent series of books.
Earth Abides... ah, what a fantastic book this one is! Isherwood Williams, scholar and loner, has never really felt comfortable with people. He has developed a habit of retreating into the Southwestern deserts for periods of time. On just such a ...

Brilliantly terrifying tragedy

by dolphinboy , Jun 07 '06
Pros: Well-developed characters, realistic plot (once premise is accepted), near-perfect writing
Cons: It is an overwhelmingly sad story
In 1957, Nevil Shute wrote On The Beach, the quietly heart-wrenching drama of the graceful farewell of Mankind after World War Three. In 1959, Pat Frank countered with the triumphantly defiant Alas, Babylon! telling us of Mankind surviving ...

Earth Abides...

by joer1978 , Jul 05 '01
Pros: Very detailed and well fleshed out characters.
Cons: No epilogue giving you an idea of how the world will be rebuilt.
This book was excellent. Probably one of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading in quite a long time. Even better considering I found this book when I was just scanning the bookshelves at a local bookstore and the cover caught my eye.
