  • The Epson 4870 Perfection Flatbed Scanner: Perhaps Perfection was too Strong of a Word.

    Dec 31, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Very high resolution, scans documents and film, USB and FireWire, PC and Mac compatible
Cons: Hinges seem fragile, very large, scan quality is slightly disappointing

Summary: The Epson Perfection 4870 Scanner is a flatbed scanner. Unlike most flatbed scanners, the 4870 can also scan film negatives and slides. The niche that this product seems to be aiming for is people who do some film scanning but who don’t want to ... read more

  • Good workhorse - lasted 3 or 4 years

    Oct 12, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Has given 4 years good service, and probably ten thousand scans before breaking down
Cons: Very expensive when new. Several bundled options that I tried and never used again.

Summary: I bought my Epson Perfection 4870 scanner in the UK about 4 years ago. It cost about 400 pounds. A cheaper one would have done just as well except I needed the firewire connection to my Mac computers, so choice was limited. Its big and ugly (grey and ... read more

  • a true multiformat "utility" film scanner

    Apr 16, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: great scans, great software (if you need it), excellent price point
Cons: Silverfast is a disappointment, scans film thru glass, long scan times

Summary: Nobody buys one of these scanners to scan flat art...at least not as the primary use. Lets face it, the intended market for this item is for the multiformat film shooter who either cannot afford the $2000 entry fee for a Nikon 9000 or who NEEDS the ... read more

  • Epson Perfection 4870 Photo Color Flatbed Scanner

    Feb 14, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Superior quality with more resolution than most people really need
Cons: I wish this scanner had a 14-inch bed.

Summary: This device is my latest acquisition. I have wanted a scanner since I purchased my first PC 5 years ago. I also wanted a scanner that could perform at the same level as my computer and the software that is installed in it. The Epson Perfection 4870 ... read more

  • Fine all-around scanner

    Jan 1, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Extended density range over other flatbed scanners, Digital ICE, outstanding results.
Cons: Price a bit high, not the fastest scanner, takes up a lot of space.

Summary: The two previous reviewers have covered most of the setup and descriptive items, so this will fill in some cracks and voice some personal opinions not covered elsewhere. I found installation to be easy, if not straightforward. My scanner came packed ... read more

  • High resolution, high price. Worth it

    Nov 8, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Highest resolution, FireWire interface, Negative support, Macintosh support.
Cons: Expensive. Doesn't integrate fully with MacOS.

Summary: Recently, I decided that I needed a scanner at home. I have boxes of photographic negatives that I want to commit to digital, plus lots of other material (like album covers to add to my music database, etc.) In order to make an 8x10 print at 600 dpi, ... read more

  • Seeing Gray = Seeing Red

    Aug 21, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Superior set of features
Cons: Inferior quality control and/or design

Summary: Pros: • 4800x9600 optical resolution trumps competition and even specs provided by Epson and competitors for scanners marketed to graphic artists and corporate customers at a $1,000-plus pricepoint. • Dmax of 3.8 is virtually unheard of in ... read more

  • Throw it away when it breaks

    Jan 18, 2006 by

    Pros: Looks nice.................................................................
Cons: The repair technician's think they're brain surgeons. $105.00/hour to repair a $400.00 scanner???

Summary: This scanner is a piece of garbage. The lid hinges broke and the transparency light just burned out..Cost of repair is $105.00/hour with a 1 hour minimum charge Parts. Do yourself a huge favor and buy another ... read more

  • Baaaaad luck with tech help / drivers

    Mar 31, 2005 by
    Rated Show
    Pros: None form Epson
    Cons: Drivers and tech help

Summary: Could not load drivers, called Epson tech help who insisted the problem was with Dell or Microsoft and got rude when I explained that after going to step four research with Microsoft and step two with Dell both parties came up with the same response. The ... read more
