  • Catatonia: Welsh Band Falls Flat With Equally Cursed and Blessed

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Apr 11 '02
    Pros: Ummm...decent songs (?)
    Cons: Cerys Matthews (the vocalist)

Summary: It’s not often that a band’s vocalist annoys me. Catatonia’s lead voice, that specifically of Cerys Matthews, scrapes at my tender eardrums. As one of the few decently well-known Welsh acts in music, it would have been nice if they ... read more

Pros: Ravishing, accomplished, clever. Everything you'd want in a woman. And then there's a band too.
Cons: Like Luke Skywalker, it's not without a dark side.

Summary: As a promotional tool for this momentous event, I envision a UK fight night that features Cerys Matthews and Shirley Manson as the main event, and just for jollys sake, the Gallagher brothers on the undercard duking it out over each other’s ... read more

Pros: A fantastically gripping piece of modern art. A true classic
Cons: Not for conventional pop fans.

Summary: With the sad demise of one of British music’s most diverse and consistently appealing bands, the time now seem perfect to evaluate arguably their best work. Catatonia, who went a long way to help constitute something of a Welsh invasion, taking ... read more

Pros: Wicked singles: Dead From The Waist Down, Londinium and Karaoke Queen. US version's bonus tracks.
    Cons: Some slow, weak tracks.

Summary: Catatonia lit up the world with International Velvet and are back with Equally Cursed and Blessed. Perhaps not as good, but then it's hard to beat perfection..... There are the wicked singles Dead From the Waist Down, Londinium and Karaoke ... read more

    Oct 11 '00
Pros: Londinium, Road Rage and Mulder and Scully (both from International Velvet)
Cons: Songs lack life, not as good as International Velvet

Summary: Catatonia's album "International Velvet" was one of the best decisions I have ever made in purchasing in album. Each of the tracks were creative and the vocals by Cerys Matthews were as briskly satisfying. It's hard for a band to match up the ... read more

  • Honey with the Gall

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Aug 05 '00
Pros: fresh alive witty insightful new troubling
Cons: you might overlook the depths for the beautiful surfaces

Summary: Catatonia’s "Equally Cursed and Blessed" springs out at you fresh and engaging right from the first beat, as rich in voice and tone and mix and rhythm and musical allusion as it is powerful in its (deceptively) simple poetry. ... read more
