I bought this vacuum almost a year ago after doing much research as well as looking at Epinions. I guess I didn't do enough research because I hate this vacuum. First of all, anything that goes into the vacuum gets spit back out at your legs or becomes statically attached to the outside of the vacuum. To use the hose, you need to take it out of the side of the vacuum at which time dirt still proceeds to go into the vacuum and out that unclosed hole. I really miss my bagged vacuums because the filter in this one gets so corroded, and it takes about 5 hours to clean it. The actual container gets so much static that I've been shocked when trying to clean it. When emptying it into the trash everything comes back out at you in a big cloud. I think I'm going to have to make the investment and buy an Oreck.

This vacuum is a major step up from the Dirt Devil I previously owned. It picks up very well, moves easily and has a filter that has made a big difference in our home. It is bagless but the canister empties easily. The only major flaw I have seen so far is that it does not reach under beds or in tight places. I bought it because the Dirt Devil stopped picking up at all. The whirlwind definitely solves that problem. The 5840 model has HEPA filtration, a headlight and a hose to get into small places. I haven't attempted to use it on uncarpeted surfaces so cannot comment about how well it does there.

Pros: Like the filtration system and having a hose.
Cons: Heavy, hose doesn't secure well.

I have owned a 5843 for about 6 months--got it after reading epinions, from a wholesale club. Initial reaction was good, except for the extra care needed to keep the cord away while going under the dining room table(a small area got skinned a little because I wasn't holding the cord away.) I also quickly got rid of the "duster" attachment(pretty useless.)I did better dusting with the hose and simple brush attachment. After a few more months, I have noted the following: The hose is too short, and tends to come loose from the bottom if you are bumping anything--have to keep an eye on the end of the hose, as dirt begins to fly around. The stair/furniture attachment is also not very useful--it uses some of the suction to run the beater, so you lose some suction. I also think the machine doesn't go low enough to get under furniture well. But on the plus side, I really like the filtration system (Hepa) and being bagless, and I feel that it cleans well. (Of course, I was using a 15 year old Oreck, which by the way is very light compared to this machine.)

We bought this vacuum after having looked at many different models. We chose Eureka because we had had good experiences with the brand before. I was horribly dissapointed when not one but 2 belt broke on the power head before I could finish one room!! I have returned this product with disgust and would not suggest it to anyone.
