Pros: Great ( false ) reputation...historically so-so Cons: Overhyped and overrated ( but when was the last time they actually ate there?? )
UPDATE: This restaurant recently burned to the ground. No plans as of yet by the deceased owner's children as to reopening. As any visitor to San Francisco knows, food --good food-- is virtually everywhere. And nowhere is this more evident than in ...
Fior D'Italia is a special occasion restaurant for me, or a great venue for a business lunch. It's expensive, there's no doubt, but the food is magnificent, the ambiance pure gentrified old-style Italian, and the service excellent.
Pros: Great food and service Cons: More expensive than average
It is an environment you don't get at the chains of so called italian restaurants. The food will tantalize your taste buds and make you want to eat more. You will enjoy quality food, wine and service!
Pros: Historical and charming, Good salad Cons: The taste of food is ordinary
If your taste buds long for authentic and traditional Northern Italian fare in a classy setting, Ristorante Fior d' Italia offers that and lot more. Established in 1886, Fior d' Italia holds the distinction of being the oldest Italian restaurant in the ...
Pros: Gina: gracious and professional hostess; ambiance and decor especially the bar: wonderfully old San Francisco Cons: Poor service. Can't comment on food from personal experience. Rude, unprofessional wait staff/floor management
Whether its in French, Italian, Latin or German, Fior d'Italia is by far the worst restaurant I have ever been in. Note I did not say eaten in, but more on that later. The only bright spot in our group's non-dining experience on Friday night, Octobe ...
Pros: Absolutely nothing Cons: This restaurant was horrible!!!
Everything about this place sucked. The food was bad, the service was bad. I got the italian meat appetizer platter. Like 11 bucks for a piece of non-Italian bologni. I am very familiar with Northern Italian cooking and travel there twice a year to visit...
The decor of Fior d' Italia was good. The food presentation was good. But the food was not worth the price. The entree (ravioli) was sweet and the chicken with sun dried tomatoes was so bland, people with asian palate who like spicy food will not find...
This was the only poor meal we ate during our 2 week stay in San Francisco.
We wanted a pasta starter. We were told this was possible, only I wanted Lasagne, and then was told it wasn't possible - so I ordered a dish, and about 20 seconds later realized the starter and main may have been too similar so asked to change it and was told "its already been ordered, you can't"
When the pasta arrived, it was dull and unexciting - the sauce tasted bottled. The main course - Osso Buco - was quite the most revolting concoction I have ever tasted, one mouthful was enough. You would think an Italian kitchen could produce non-lumpy polenta. The sauce was reminiscent of gloopy school-dinner gravy. I sent it back and opted for a chicken breast with salad. I thought I would be safe with that!
We didn't stay for dessert - and we didn't leave a tip, which I hope made the point clear and plain.
This restaurant clearly exists on its reputation alone
Pros: Best Italian food we have had in ages. Cons: Very hard to get into on the weekends.
If you want authentic Italian cuisine and terrific service go to the Fior d' Italia. We had the best Ossobuco and Calimari ever. The Caesar Salad they serve is also a classic.
Our friends had some of the restaurants pasta and loved it. The waiter told us it was all (pasta and sauce) made in house and we believe it. They had gnocchi and the cannelloni. Very good.
We finished with a world class tirimisu.
Being America's Oldest Italian Restaurant certainly gives it some credibility which we appreciate.
The flower has wilted and died by lep33 ,Jan 01 '04
Pros: It was open on New Year's Day Cons: The flower has wilted and died.
A few years back, I took my wife and friends to Fior D'Italia for her birthday. Unlike previous years, the service was less than acceptable and the food was barely acceptable. The waiter obviously didnt like my wine choice. I was a wine that I knew and liked.
This year, I tried it againhoping that the last bad dinner was some kind of quirk. Sorry. Their wine list showed a wine as vintage 1999. They served a vintage 2000. The price was a bit hefty, but for my wifes birthday, I went for it.
They brought my wife a birthday bottle of wine.
When I got the bill They charged more for the wine than I saw on the wine menuand they changed for the birthday bottle that I didnt ask for and though was a gift.
As far as we are concerned, the flower has wilted and died.
