Pros: easy set up, light, easy to read Cons: flimsy belt clip, +/- 10% count accuracy, can zero count accidentally
I bought the Freestyle Tracer pedometer as part of my overall fitness program. The Tracer is easy to set-up, is extremely light, and is easy to read. At the beginning I would walk 20 paces to see if it accurately counted my steps, it didn't. I did ...

Love it and great price
by cyberpyxi ,Sep 20 '07
Pros: Very accurate, highly recommended by Consumer Reports, easy to use, small, reliable! Cons: Can accidentally reset, and must be careful of clasp, is plastic.
I have used pedometers for the past three years. When my last expensive one broke, I decided to do a lot of digging before buying a new one.
I checked out all the best rated pedometers, this one came highly recommended from Consumer Reports. It was claimed to be the most accurate, most durable, and most user friendly. I have had no issues with it, it keeps track just fine, and it's small enough to go under my clothes comfortably.
Watch that you don't put it somewhere where you will accidentally press and hold the reset button, such as in the way of the seat belt, where your cell phone case can contact it, etc.
otherwise, BUY THIS PEDOMETER!
***UPDATE***
The above was written, I had been using this pedometer for a short time. It is now 6 months later, and I still love it. Great product

Counts steps accurately, but belt clip flimsy; reset button too sensitive
by mimiwill ,Mar 13 '05
Pros: Accurate step count; small and lightweight Cons: Flimsy plastic belt clip; Reset Button - Too sensitive
After seeing an article in the Wall Street Journal touting this pedometer as the most accurate and the Best Value, I purchased it. WJS left out two key criteria from its evaluation--durability and the design of the reset button.
The flimsy plastic belt clip broke after using it a few months--not jogging, just walking.
If the reset button is inadvertently pressed for 2 seconds or longer (by your arm or a chair back), all the settings go back to zero. The position and sensitivity of the reset button make it difficult to place the pedometer on your body so that you don't accidentally press it. Most frustrating when you are trying to make that 10,000-step-per-day goal.
You need the instruction manual to program it the first time for stride length, weight & measurement type (metric vs. imperial). I would have liked a more intuitive interface. However, at $20 or less, and the fact you have to program only once, I'm willing to forgive that shortcoming.

Nice concept - Poor execution
by jerisman ,Mar 20 '07
Pros: Love the top meter. Easy to read. Cons: Way too easy to accidentally set or reset
I loved the looks of this thing and the top-mounted dial, which means you can look at it while in use. Mine came without instructions (from REI), but it was easy to figure out the logic. Works great as a step counter, BUT you need to remember to take it off if you're doing any unusual exercises involving bending or twisting. It is very easy to accidentally reset it. The design could be greatly improved if the set and re-set buttons were recessed so that you could only depress them on purpose - such as with the top of a pencil. This seemingly minor - but very significant - design flaw prevents me from recommending it.

Bought two, no more!
by callemlikei ,Sep 05 '07
Pros: The Freestyle Tracer is accurate and easy to read(especially when walking). Cons: It is not sealed well enough to withstand even a moderate amount of perspiration.
I purchased a Freestyle Tracer Sport Pedometer after reading several favorable reviews on the product. Adjusting the pedometer for stride and distance took a little bit of trial and error but I was able to make the adjustments and obtain fairly accurate results. I walk (and sometimes jog) four or five days each week. I found that the pedometer was usually less accurate while jogging but overall, I was pleased with the purchase for a few months. THEN, the LED started to become fogged, which made it impossible to read the LED. I replaced the battery but after going a mile or two, the same thing happened. Thinking that it was fogging up due to moisture after replacing the battery, I ordered another pedometer (same model). Used it for a few months and the same thing happened. Hey, if you live in a warm climate and exercise, you're going to sweat. And if you sweat, your Freestyle Tracer is going to stop working...sooner, than later!

Two went haywire in less than a week.
by gwynfar ,Jun 30 '07
Pros: Size and easy to read screen. Cons: Flimsy, too sensitive, malfunctioning screen.
I bought one of these on the recommendation of a salesperson where I buy my running shoes. As others have said in earlier reviews, it's way too easy to reset by accident and lose your data.
Also, mine wasn't counting all my steps. For instance, when I took it out for the first walk, I stopped at one corner and got a reading. Two blocks later, I'd only walked 7 more steps, according to the pedometer. My stride isn't THAT long!
The very next day, I put it on, and less than an hour later, the LCD screen stopped working properly - you couldn't read all the numbers. Not a big deal if it's just the ones place, but kind of a pain in the hundreds and thousands place. So I took it back to the store, and they exchanged it for a new one.
Next day, I had to take it back for the same issues. They ended up refunding my money (normally they only do store credit), and now I'm going to spend some time researching brands before buying one.
I wouldn't recommend this item to anyone.

Freestyle Tracer Pedometer
by showertreat ,Nov 24 '04
Pros: Easy to use, affordable, measures steps, calories & distance. Cons: Belt clip is thin, broke within 2 months of light use.
I received one of these for a birthday gift, and at first, I was delighted with the pedometer. It's easy to use, measures steps, distance and calories, and has a clock. You can calibrate your weight and stride length, too. The only flaw is the belt clip is fragile! I'm a 41 year old woman, and I'm pretty sure I didn't subject the pedometer to any undue stress. Within 45 days the clip disintegrated into several pieces. Now I have a perfectly good pedometer and no way to attach it. Look for a model with a sturdier belt clip!

Displeased with the Freestyle Tracer
by talljoey ,Jul 27 '05
Pros: I enjoy the screen and being motivated to walk by watching the numbers. Cons: The reset button is an awful idea.
I bought this Tracer with lots of expectations. I was informed it was highly rated. As I have found out, the reset button is in an awful place and I erase my information nearly every day. I have moved the pedometer from one side of my body to the other to see if I could stop hitting it with my arm. But today I erased over 9700 steps, and it was only 3:30. I would not suggest this product to anyone.
