Great First Digital for SLR Fans

by scmrak Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Dec 09 '03
Pros: Very good photo quality, simple and intuitive interface, lens converters
Cons: Limited manual override capability, short flash range
Back in the old days I was sort of a photography snob. You know the type: color photography was for tourists, autofocus was for kids, and no one serious used film faster than ASA 50. I could develop and print in B/W or color; push my film all the way to ...

Fuji Finepix 3800 - great outdoors, not so otherwise.

by asafono , Jul 12 '04
Pros: Good colors outdoors, strong zoom, ergonomic controls, decent bundled software.
Cons: Weak flash, slow shutter in automode indoors, troublesome autofocus.
Before delving into the review, I must make the following confession: I am a complete amateur in digital photography, and photography in general. Being also quite lazy, I never figured out this camera's manual mode (one justification being that the ...

The Fujifilm 3800 is the replacement for my Canon A20. I was very satisfied with the A20 so I was expecting alot from the 3800. I chose the 3800 because despite it's SLR-like look, it's a point and shoot camera with some great features. Overall, i'm...

Pros: Uses AA batteries! Feels great in your hands. Good pictures.
Cons: Lens cap keeps falling off.
This is my first digital camera, but I've owned SEVERAL camcorders and they all sucked monkey turds. Know why? Cause of the stinkin proprietary battery designs. You have to use a special battery, charge it in a special charger, and make sure the battery...

Cons: Uses XD which isn't readily available, zoom is in awkward place

by adatole , Apr 24 '03
Pros: Good price, great zoom, SLR "feel", good docs, lightweight, easy controls
Cons: XD memory card, a little bulky, ASA (200 only), pics can be blurry without flash

A Fine Picture Taking Tool

by clutterqueen68 , May 25 '03
Pros: Up to 100 pictures per memory card. No more film developing!
Cons: Batteries seem to run down quick, flash pics stay dark until snapped.
The FujiFilm 3800 replaced my old 35mm camera I had been working with for years. With a 35mm I was always misplacing my exposed film, or forgetting to take it to get it developed, not to mention the prices for developing the film. With the 3800, all I...

I love my Fuji FinePix 3800!!!

by angelrab , Apr 04 '05
Pros: For the pro, it's fun; for the novice, it'll make you look like a pro.
Cons: The photo program on my PC is easier, but with practice I'd enjoy the Fuji.
Although I'm no camera guru either, as an Art Major I did take a couple photography classes in college, so I've done it "the hard way" with a standard 35mm camera, so I have some comparison experience. The purchase of the Fuji FinePix 3800 was the ...

Pros: Great resolution, excellent zoom
Cons: Another different memory card

Cons: Electronic view-finder is opaque at low light. xD memory card is the most expensive.
The 6X optical zoom is unusually good at this price range, the shutter delay is minimal, the image quality is excellent, battery-life is long and the menus are intuitive. I have been using this camera for four months now and it takes great pictures. ...

Fuji Finepix- Works FINE for the money
by tiffanyjg ,Nov 29 '06
Pros: Great zoom, nice pictures.
Cons: Big for a woman, bad LCD, SLOW, sensitive to movement.
First let me begin by saying I'm not a professional I'm a broker turned stay at home Mom that takes a couple hundred pictures a week of my friends and family. I received this camera as a gift last year from a good friend who just got a nicer camera. I had previously owned a Olympus Camedia and a Cannon Powershot. Both 2 mp. I thought I really liked those cameras until I started using this one. The Fugi Finepix has a lot of nice features and excellent zoom capabilities. The pictures come out awesome. I personally wouldn't have chosen this model because I think it's ackward to hold with small hands. This model is much more sensitive to movement than either of the other cameras I used before. Because of this I find I end up missing shots or getting a blurry picture. The LCD is very hard to see in bright light and almost impossible at night and I have perfect vision. The shutter speed is very slow. The flash is unpredictable too.

Problem Child
by zerokiller698 ,Jul 16 '08
Pros: its cheep
Cons: price reflects quality, just the wrong choice in a camera
I use this camera at work, taking pictures of cars for ebay and other websites. This camera eats up batteries, has a long shutter delay, and turns off at complete random.

Fuji is a respected company that has produced many good quality cameras and have a giant staff that designs them and produces them. I think they were all out to lunch when this camera was made.

Other than all of that, the complaints keep coming, its too bulky, has only 3.2 megapixels (my phone takes better pictures and also makes calls and plays games) and finally it uses AA batteries. No camera should use AA batteries.

Excellent camera for under $300
by nhughes5 ,Dec 14 '05
Pros: A very fine camera for about $300.
Cons: When batteries are replaced all internal settings are lost and have to be reset.
This camera has a fine 6x optical zoom and takes very nice macro pictures also. You can even buy optional lenses and filters for it. Battery life is also very good and works well with rechargeables. Only drawback I see is when batteries are replaced all internal settings are lost and have to be reset. Otherwise it reverts back to it's lame default settings of lowest quality format, quality and size. I have had mine for 2 years now and just bought my daughter one from a dealer that was factory refurbished with all original accessories for under $150. I paid a little over $300 for mine when it was new. Hope this review helps someone.

Beware
by Glidedon ,Apr 08 '05
Pros: Worked ok while it lasted
Cons: Didn't last long
I paid $400.00 dollars for this camera after reading good reviews and recommendations from PCMagazine. 18 months after I purchased the camera it failed due to poor manufacturing. Screws inside the camera that had held the lens ring in place became loose and short circuited the camera. I searched the internet and found that this was not uncommon for this to happen ! I sent the camera to Fuji for repair along with a letter to customer service stating what had happened and that my repair experience with this camera would dictate whether or not I would be purchasing any more Fuji products. I sent two letters one to the repair facility and one to Customer service. I received no correspondence from Fuji . I received only a computer generated repair tag estimate for the repairs at $118.00. Needless to say I will not be purchasing anymore Fuji Products.

Buyer beware of Fuji.

Terrible Camera!
by eilmac ,Dec 27 '04
Pros: If perfect light, new batteries, still subject matter then it takes OK photos.
Cons: Everything!!! Shutter, battery, workmanship, quality, lag time, expense, repair and parts expense, the list goes on...
Shutter speed is awful, I've missed more great shots of my toddler because of the 1 second delay. The lens ring and cap fell off permenantly. It's been in for repairs twice, the battery life is very short. It can't take motion shots unless the flash is on even in a well lit room. The on/off switch lags and now mine is stuck and won't turn off. I'm ditching this camera, don't recommend it and will not be buying Fuji again.

Fuji quality is amazing
by pdcanady ,Nov 11 '03
Pros: Unbelievable zoom, 8x10 pictures look like professionals, easy to use, plus movie mode.
Cons: Driver download seems to be a problem on more than one model, including this one.
I ordered this camera earlier this year and was happy with almost everything it has to offer. However, the zoom was not as crisp as I would have liked and taking pictures of wildlife from 20 feet away did not impress me. However, the kicker was that I could never get the camera installed on my computer because it kept telling me there were 3 drivers missing, even though I downloaded them from a web site onto a floppy. After spending about 8 hours on the phone with both Dell and Fuji, and each blaming the other, I gave up and sent the camera back. I am glad I did as the Fuji S5000 has everything and more than I could want. The 10x optical zoom is fantastic and, although I am still getting the same driver errors, I am not giving up so easily this time as I have fallen in love with this camera.

Great little digicam
by rodkent ,Jan 02 '04
Pros: 6X optical zoom, great pictures, AA batteries, intuitive menus
Cons: Low light limitations, lens cap needs modifications
Having shot over 5000 pictures in the last year with my FinePix 3800, many in trying circumstances, I can state that this digicam is worth every cent. Low light photography is a matter of luck and taking enough shots so you get the one you want, but in general the photo quality is amazing with wonderful color saturation. I solved the lens cap problem by installing a better 55mm cap and teathering it with nylon cord to a velcro strap around the lens base. This camera has survived the Amazon jungles, swamps, beaches, New York City, climbing, hiking, and lots of moisture, grit, and general yuckiness. The generous optical zoom was a main reason to purchase and has proved extremely useful. Battery life averages 150-200 shots. This digicam should satisfy all but the most demanding pro.

Happy with my FUJI - great camera used or new
by executivejock ,Jan 22 '05
Pros: Quality of pictures, optical zoom and ease of use
Cons: Big for my pocket and LCD is dark at night!
Purchased from Staples for 300 bucks with 64 meg card and some other extras. This camera took quality pictures that are better then the small cameras of today.

You need to buy 4 long life AA batteries from any store for 10 bucks. Charger is another 20 dollars, but these last a long time.

The camera died after about 4 years, but now I find myself looking for the same camera on Ebay and I own a Cannon 600.

Good camera for the money
by johnwo ,Nov 08 '04
Pros: Ease of use, 6X zoom, good optics
Cons: Difficult to get good photos indoors without using flash.
I purchased my Finepix camera over a year ago now, and I have to say that overall I am very happy with it.

It is quite tricky to take indoor photos without using the flash, the manual mode requires some playing around-with, but for all the camera buffs and old-schoolers, this is not so much as one would have with a high end film camera. The quality is good, and the ease of use is outstanding. I often (although perhaps unwisely) let my 8 year old take the camera out for photo shoots, it can be very "point and shoot" oriented.

Good for newbie that wants MORE Camera to start with
by cmh8133 ,Dec 06 '04
Pros: Price, general features, add on lens easy to find (and not expensive).
Cons: The biggest flaw, no shutter speed control. With that feature I'd never buy another camera.
Very happy with this camera. I have shot people: full shots and head shots. I have shot musical concerts. Done some night time shots *tripod a must*. Macro's of snow, bugs and plants. I have even shot car races. Took a bit of practice but I got great shots of the cars. It also works well as a basic point and shoot. I have some nice party shots using it like that.
Zoom works great, closeup macro looks great. I have shots of spiders that freak people out. Manual was not bad, it told me what I needed to do what I wanted.
I used the video feature once, don't buy it for that, but then don't buy any digital camera for that!!!
Over all this is a great camera. I highly recommend it.

Need to work on lens cap, shutter time
by dplank ,Dec 13 '04
Pros: Software, battery life, zoom.
Cons: A bit bulky, slow shutter, lens cap defect.
Camera takes lovely posed pictures but many missed action shots due to slow shutter in 'auto' mode, also blurs easily. Easy to use, good software package, satisfactory battery life (although there is no low-battery warning until the last minute). Haven't used video feature.

Not happy with the lens cap ~ won't stay on ~ very irritating, impossible to see through viewfinder in low light.

Not recommended for indoor or low light.
by rbobaru ,Jan 18 '04
Pros: Great picture quality in good light, manual settings.
Cons: Cannot take pictures in low light.
Excellent picture quality when taken outdoor or certain indoor conditions. Out of focus pictures when taken indoor or low light because it cannot auto-focus (at all). To me it is very important that it can perform well outdoor and indoor. If all you do is take outdoor pics or carry a tripod everywhere, this is a very nice camera. However, I missed some good shots at dinner parties. It's embarrassing to show up with a fancy looking camera that can't take pictures. I'm selling it! My friend showed me his comparable camera. Spend a little more and buy Sony.

Fuji Finepix 3800: QUALITY AT A GREAT PRICE
by twinstwice ,Sep 14 '04
Pros: Quality at a great price. Easy to use. Great picture quality.
Cons: Shutter lag is slow.
I purchased this camera on ebay a few months ago. With all the technology and advances in camera quality and features that are coming out everyday, I am happy to say that I still love this camera. I am far from being a professional photographer and if youre like me who needed a camera just for taking pics of the family and other misc. functions then this is definitley for you. Easy to use, awesome picture quality for a 3.2 mp camera, sleek design and even easier picture downloading makes this camera a great buy. Highly recommended.

Great little camera if you are shooting in bright light.
by ozman22 ,Jul 01 '04
Pros: Great for bright light and outdoors.
Cons: Won't focus in low light situations.
My vacation pictures and all the pictures I took outdoors were absolutely breathtaking. BUT, indoors in anything other than bright ambient light, such as bright florescent lighting, this camera simply will not focus!
I had some very disappointing results with my photos of my daughters wedding reception. Most were out of focus. Not noticeable until you put them on the computer and view them in a larger size. Forget using this camera if you are doing candid shots indoors!

Very Slow Shutter, Catches Action Shots Poorly
by wayslc ,Feb 19 '04
Pros: 6X zoom is nice, Battery life good, picture quality good
Cons: Slow to take the shot, slow shutter speed (action in the shot is often blurred)
This is the 3rd digital camera I have owned. It has better picture quality than my Olympus D490 (2.2mp)and the 6X optical zoom is good. My complaint and the reason I am getting rid of the camera is that it very slow getting ready to take a picture and if there is much action in the picture it will be blurred. The subjects can not be moving too much even in bright light. I have tried a number of settings to solve this problem and have had no success.

Battery life is good.

by yankeeprod_dt3000 ,Dec 16 '02
I have had mine for two weeks now and it's done great. It looks good, feels good in your hand, and it's very easy to use. The image quality is great. Taking stop action pictures requires that you learn how to use the cameras auto exposure lock and then it's easy. Taking pictures in low light isn't the problem some people seem to think...it needs to be really dark before you can't see anything in the view finder, and when that happens I just point and shoot, and it has worked fine. The only complaint I have is the lack of more advanced manual controls and the 3 second maximum exposure time, but I'm just being picky, this camera can do 99.9% of what anybody wants. You won't be sorry you bought this one.

Easy to start shooting, but read the manual and practice a little and your good shot pecentage goes straight up. I like everything about it and it impresses other camera users I've shown. Down load to pc is a breeze after one loading of included software. 128 memory card is overkill, play with 16 mg card before buying next card, 2 or 3 16 mg memory cards may be all you need unless you are a freelance "poparazi".

FinePix 3800 was a Fine Pick
by digicamstryder ,Feb 21 '06
Pros: Great price, excellent zoom, excellent picture quality, good evf/lcd, ease of use
Cons: small memory card, no usb cable, poor af in subdued light, shutter delay
I've converted from using a Minolta SRT101 with a 70-210mm Macro Zoom for 30 years. Within one month of purchasing, I was using the FFFP3800 almost exclusively. I researched digital cameras for 6 months with two professional cameramen. They were aware of what I was capable of and what kind of pictures I was shooting and my budget. The purchase of the 3800 was the result. Set the picture quality on High-F and leave it there. After purchases included 4 x 1800 nmhi batteries and charger, usb cable and a 256 meg xd memory card. I've had people ask me where they could get this camera from. I got more than I paid for and am very pleased.

This is my first digital camera and I've had it for about 2 weeks and I just love it. I did alot of researching and decided on this one. I am use to a manual focus SLR so I wanted something close to the feel of that. It takes wonderful pictures and the ease of downloading them is great. It's easy enough to use and has some great features. The only thing I wish it had was a shutter speed control but I'm being picky. The additional lenses are great and it's small enough and light enough (something my SLR DOESN"T have) to fit in most any small pack (I take it on trail rides with my horses). Overall I couldn't be any happier with my first digital camera.

As for blurry shots... use the sports setting.... and the flash if indoors, in this mode pics taken from a moving car were not blurry! Much research prior to purchase. Very happy with this little pup. Intuitive feel and good bang for the buck. Use Sports setting to reduce blur and flash in low light situations. I keep my adapter ring mounted with a skylight filter in place and use a standard 55mm lens cap which I have painted silver to match the camera. Works great, stays on, and really protects the lens, but Fuji really should provide a decent lens cap that works with or without the adapter ring in place for this great little camera. (It's not too late Mr.Fuji - provide one as a goodwill thing)

I like it!!!
by itsmeeelisa ,Aug 30 '04
Pros: Nice zoom for the money! Easy to use.
Cons: Must adjust the LCD from inside and outside. But at least it has one.
I will say I don't think the picture is as crisp, if you will as my Olympus. Even though the 3800 has a lot more megapixels. But I haven't had good luck with Olympus like I have the Fuji's.

Fuji FinePix 3800 in shop more at home
by mluria ,Oct 17 '04
Pros: decent pictures
Cons: spent more time in shop than at home
I've had this camera for about two years and am finally giving up. It takes good pictures, but it's broken twice. Once was under warranty, but I still needed to wait over a month to get it back. The camera just froze up totally. The second time I paid about $120 .. I know it seems silly given that you can buy a new one for $185, but I figured it worked well, so why not. It came back, but then the battery pack didn't work. I told the shop to just toss it. It wasn't worth another $50. In any case, we had a family trip and I went out and bought another Fuji for $150.

Good (maybe even great) camera!
by lockjawdavis ,Oct 28 '03
Pros: Ease of use, picture quality...
Cons: LCD screen, red-eye reduction ineffective...
This is my first digital camera. Let's start there. I bought this a few weeks before our first child was born knowing I would soon be taking hundreds of quick snaps, and the Finepix 3800 did not disappoint. It was easy to learn and intuitive in almost every respect. The quality of pictures are standard to standard-plus compared to most 3.2 megapixel cameras I've seen. Downloading pics using the provided Fuji software is easy, as well. I recommend getting a set of AA rechargeable batteries as this camera sucks battery juice like a demon. My gripes are few: The LCD screen is too dark for most indoor shooting situations. The flash is a bit harsh, especially on faces. The red-eye reduction flash does not do a great job of removing the dreaded red eye. Other than that, I'd have to recommend this camera to novices everywhere.

perfect webcam as well!
by aggiegrl ,May 10 '04
Pros: picture quality, webcam, video recording with sound, zoom
Cons: short battery life (get the adapter!)
I got my Finepix cam at BestBuy for half off (it was originally $300!!) last year and have been pleased with the results! The color and quality of the pics are amazing! I just wish I had a printer to be able to print out that resolution!! I had no idea it could act as a webcam as well. At the time of purchase, I was looking for a webcam separately...but discovered that this feature-packed camera could double as both! also, it has a separate "video" mode that can capture clips of video with sound recording!! i am still amazed at the durability, resourcefulness, and quality of this device!

by krassi2k3 ,Sep 23 '03
Pros: Very good quality at 1M, excellent at 2M and 3M JPEG.
Cons: No TIFF format. The camera powers off in 1.5-2 min, needs restart.
The camera is slick and easy to use. Most features are self explanatory, access to the menu and the numerous camera features is intuitive and simple to implement.

Fuji 3800 - Great Pictures, Great Price!
by sasori3 ,Aug 19 '04
Pros: Picture quality, feel, ease of use, zoom lens, battery life.
Cons: Size of camera.
The 3800 is what one should expect from a digital camera and much more. The quality of the picture in highest quality are great for reproduction, you just will need a bigger memory card. I have on many occasions taken my XD card down to the Sony ImageStation and developed incredible prints from this camera. I have also shared tons of these photos with friends and always get asked what camera I have. The camera is a breeze to use with minimal involvement into the manual. The zoom is quite nice also. The battery life observed with NI/MH batteries was quite decent (no need to jump to the store amidst vacationing and snapping tons of shots). The Fuji FinePix software is severely simple to work with and has other nice perks like online photo sharing capability. The only thing that one might not take to is the shutter speed, since it lags behind some higher end models. Shutter speed aside, for the money (average in the $200-$300 range) you can't really be let down by this camera. I've tried other cameras and the Fuji series seems to be the easiest to use and very reliable too.

Great pictures when the light is right!
by curty2002 ,Feb 07 '04
Pros: Easy to use. XD memory is fast. great battery life. great shots in good light.
Cons: lense cap. ISO 100. shutter lag. toy like weight.
This is a great camera for the beginner. Easy point and shoot. Not a pocket camera because of is size, but this is also a plus as you can grab it very comfortably. Low light is a big problem, ISO 100 ONLY, the more zoom you use the more light is needed and the shutter speed slows. The result is many blurry pictures. Shutter lag is not too bad in bright light but again as the light dims it seems worse.
This was my first purchase of a digital and I did get more memory. xd is very fast loading into the computer, and the card reader is the only way to go.
I take many outdoor shots and they look like my cannon AE-1 (Great). Group shots turn out fine if the zoom is not used to far. Medium flash range.

Some friends advised against the Fuji brand compared to a more familiar camera manufacturer, like a Canon or Olympus.... However, I have been very pleased and am constanty using it (new toy concept!) But the beauty of DC's is the fact they give immediate gratification..Good value and lots of features for the 1st time DC owner...

This is a great camera. I love the simplicity and ease of use with this camera. The colors reproduction is great, you are getting "true colors" with this one. I have also found that even regular AA bateries seem to last a very long time. Enjoy this one....it is truly a steal for this price.

They say we can't adjust the F stop, but when I had that on my 35MM I seldom did anyway. Don't see an issue with point & click types like me. Best price / value after tons of research.

I just got this camera and it did not take me long to figure out. It has lots of easy to use features. It takes nice pictures. I took some of my pics that i took to wal-mart and got them developed and they turned out great. Also is a great by for the price. The new Xd cards are great too. The only problem I have found is the lens cap does not stay one well mostly when you have on the 55mm converter.

by brjax_dt3000 ,Jan 02 '03
Easy to start shooting, but read the manual and practice a little and your good shot pecentage goes straight up. I like everything about it and it impresses other camera users I've shown. Down load to pc is a breeze after one loading of included software. 128 memory card is overkill, play with 16 mg card before buying next card, 2 or 3 16 mg memory cards may be all you need unless you are a freelance "poparazi".

I had a 35 mil camera and decided to move up into some thing else. My 1st camera took excellent pictures so I was hesitant to make the decision. This is my first dig camera I purchased. I researched it all and found it was difficult to make a choice however I finnally did. I am very pleased. It gives a lot of bang for the buck. Allows you some control and I love it so farand would defininately recomend it.

This is my first digital camera. I did the research on digital cameras and bought this one which seemed the best value for money. It is easy to figure out how to use it. It has a comfortable feel in my hands. The picture quality is excellent. I have recommended this camera to several of my friends who are looking to buy a digital camera. As this is my first digital camera I am more than happy with the experience as I was prevoiously a devoted 35mm camera user. An excellent camera
