  • The Best Movie Everyone Refused To See - Gosford Park

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 10, 2002
Pros: I couldn't fit them all in the whole review, how do I fit them here?
Cons: If there must be one, let's say it demands more than one viewing.

Summary: When you enter the theater, and the pictures start flashing by on the silver screen, there are three classifications for what is about to unfold before you. Movies can be wonderful or terrible. Some films are better than others. But, if someone ... read more

  • Best Movies: Robert Altman's Triumph--Gosford Park --DVD REVIEW NO SPOILERS

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 27, 2012
Pros: Maggie Smith, Alan Bates, Helen Mirren and dozens of others.
    Cons: too few to mention

Summary: Robert Altman's Gosford Park ( 2001) should be required viewing for all film directors prior to working on their movies. It could be used in the same way that professional boxers go to Boxing Camp to get into shape before a fight. Altman ... read more

  • About as much fun as watching elegant British people talk for two hours

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Mar 3, 2010
Pros: If you're interested in the class system, or if the title intrigues you
Cons: About twenty uninteresting people talking for two hours

Summary: I was only ten or so when Gosford Park was first released, and I remember it being well received and being nominated for several Oscars. It even won best screenplay, so I finally got around to seeing it. I figured Robert Altman would have an interesting ... read more

  • Well, I suppose life must go on. Unhook me!

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Dec 17, 2005
Pros: Deep, all-star cast, witty script, excellent period detail, good cinematography and soundtrack
Cons: Too many characters to keep track of in a single viewing

Summary: Gosford Park (2001) is a film treasure except for one major flaw. The story includes such a large number of significant characters and such a high density of significant lines in the script that it is next to impossible to digest this movie ... read more

  • Who Dunnit? (Who Dun WHAT, exactly?!?!)

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Aug 23, 2005
Pros: Complex plot, excellent cast, oodles of period atmosphere
Cons: Not enough screen time for_some of_the stars, some will find_the number_of characters a_little overwhelming

Summary: Gosford Park is your typical "who dunnit" murder mystery... except that, in many ways, it is anything but a typicla who dunnit murder mystery. Featuring a cast absolutely loaded with star names, Gosford Park does indeed contain a ... read more

  • Running around GOSFORD PARK Like Geese with Their Heads Cut Off? Not Robert Altman!

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Feb 27, 2002
Pros: Brilliant direction, setting, acting, photography and allegorical screenplay.
Cons: Altman's typical off-hand style and overlapping dialogue.

Summary: PRIME SUSPECT FOR THE OSCAR? As in the case of several films nominated for the Oscar this year, GOSFORD PARK causes some viewers and critics to clutch their forelocks and mutter, "Shallow, elitist and entirely unimportant!" Others are throwing ... read more
