  • The Guild D-4 and the Larrivee D03: Battle of the $600 mahogany dreadnought guitars

Oct 15, 2001 by Horswispr is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Musical Instruments
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Two high quality entry-level guitars
    Cons: See review

Summary: Well, I'm going to do it again. I'm going to put a review in the wrong category. Sort of. The guitar I'm all excited about is the Larrivee D03, an entry-level mahogany guitar that can be had for only $599 at Guitar Center. But since Larrivee isn't ... read more

  • Plenty For the Rookie to Like Here

    Dec 10, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: big sound, good price, easy playability for the intermediate player
Cons: lacks subtlety, upper range is a *touch* muted

Summary: Let me be honest with you: I'm not a very good guitar player. I've got a solid grip on the most familiar chords, I can move my way through a folk song, and I can strum fast and loud. No fancy solos, no intricate finger-picking, no Bill Frisell-ian ... read more

  • Great Guitar for the Money

    Nov 8, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Cheap price, good sound.
Cons: It's not as fancy as others.

Summary: Everybody has different opinions about what a guitar should sound like and look like. Some people like black, green, red, blue, or other colored instruments. While I liked the natural, plain dreadnought styling of my Guild D4. I've heard others say ... read more

  • Solidly constructed Mahogany guitar

    Sep 28, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: strong construction, strong midranges
Cons: heavy, tone is overpoweringly midrangey

Summary: I have to admit that I am somewhat disappointed with this Guild model (both this and the Guide DCE1, which I have lots of experience playing) The guitar is fairly standard: rosewood fingerboard, sitka spruce top, and mahogany back and sides. One ... read more

  • Guild 1996 D4 6 String made in Westerly, RI

    Jun 26, 2007 by

Pros: Well made. Good low & mid range. Comfortable playability. Good price. Nice look.
Cons: High range not as bright and crisp as Ibanez.

Summary: Found my jewel in a neighborhood guitar shop it included a well used hard case. Asking price $600. Traded my Ibanez AE acoustic/electric and paid $400, including tax. Playability is fantastic the action is nice and low without "too much" ring. Much more ... read more

  • 12 years and still strumming

    Dec 7, 2005 by
    Rated Show
Pros: great warm sound, stays in tune after long hard strumming
Cons: neck and back finish absorbs hand oils, hard to clean, chips easily

Summary: This was my first acoustic guitar which gives it instant favorite status, but for comparison's sake I also perform with a Gibson J45 rosewood sunburst. It's pushed as a beginner guitar, and it serves well for that purpose, but I've made recorded and ... read more

  • Surprisingly Good!

    Sep 1, 2005 by

Pros: Amazing rich, clear, loud sound
Cons: Plain Jane appearance, no onboard electronics

Summary: I was browsing in my local "Mom & Pop" music store when I picked up a guitar that blew me away with its sound- the Guild D4. I wasn't really planning on buying a guitar right now, but I just couldn't pass it up. I currently own a Martin DM, a Taylor ... read more

  • The Guild D4 is like no other

    Nov 11, 2004 by
    Rated Show
Pros: Great price, awesome tone, MADE IN AMERICA!
Cons: No gloss finish, so it scratches easily

Summary: I have played many guitars in the past 15 years, and the D4 is the best and most rare type of guitar. 1. Deep sounds with great tone (which only grows and deepens over time) 2. There are no bracings on the back which just projects the guitar and adds ... read more
