Whatever happened to our American companies that could make good simple things like toasters in the past? Long ago I had toasters that worked well for decades, but the last 3 I've bought, including this Proctor Silex 22605, were made in China and they all do the same thing - they toast or scorch one side of the bread and leave the other with only a very light browning, with that being in uneven splotches. Turning the timer to get normal toasting on the lightest side always results in the other side being partially burned, carbonized. This would have been a corporate embarrassment in past years, but nowadays engineering skill seems to be irrelevant. Looking down into the wells, you can see that the heating elements are numerous and close-spaced on one side, and few and spread way out on the other, resulting in one side of the toast being overheated.
