Pros: One of the most beautiful if not the most beautiful road I've seen. Cons: You need 2 days. Take them!

When I first started researching our trip to Hawaii some people both online and off told us not to bother with the road to Hana. My best friend told me that it was boring and if we wanted to see a...
Pros: Enchanting surroundings, colors explode, surprises around each turn, a healing experience Cons: Cons? What cons, this is the Road to Hana!
Introduction Its December, 1987 and after eleven months of flying almost constantly to places with names that are hard to remember (and sometimes harder to pronounce), its time for the Xenos to catch up on some much needed R&R, but ...
Pros: Beautiful scenery and tons of places to stop Cons: lack of bathrooms and eateries
On a recent trip to Maui I decided to do the Hana trip with my fiancée who had never been. Since I am Hawaiian and have traveled all over the islands I was more inclined to go and be totally prepared for the long drive.
Pros: A driving experience and scenery that will leave a lasting impression Cons: Very little room for error. You must drive CAREFULLY!
If you are a fan of driving, this is a "must drive". On our honeymoon 20 years ago, we drove this road in a tiny Chevy Cavalier with little or no power steering. It left me exhausted but yet exhilarated at the same time. It is a challenge, and I ...
Pros: most beautiful drive, must see Cons: must drive carefully, need to pack a lunch
I was reluctant to take the drive myself hearing that it was a somewhat dangerous road flooded with tourists. I was pleasantly surprised. We left for Hana from Kahului about 9:30 am and planned 5-6 hours for our round trip. It's a good idea to take it ...
Pros: Waterfalls, swimming in waterfall pools, sub-tropical rainforest, BEAUTIFUL! Cons: Long drive with many curves
We took a tour with a shuttle group and had a tour guide. The tour guide was helpful, and we stopped at many spots during the drive. Each stop was very interesting. We stopped at a black sand beach, the Seven Sacred Pools, two waterfalls, a fruit stand,...
Pros: Scenery, scenery, scenery Cons: Very narrow road and all one-lane bridges. It's the other drivers that are scary :)
I finally drove the road and it was wonderful, despite the patches of rain and gray skies. As a photographer, I was disappointed that I could not get the shots I had envisioned, but I am planning on doing it again on my next visit and this time, spending a couple of days in Hana.
The road to the end of the rainbow by hanaperry2 ,Aug 31 '06
Pros: Secluded lagoons and falls, unlike the more populated tourist destinations of the islands. Cons: Some parts of the road too narrow for two cars.
This is more than just a road. The Hana Highway is more like a trip down the yellow brick road. You know that there is a treat at the end of it, while the road itself is a large part of the enchantment.
Yes this road is narrow in spots, and no there aren't many places to eat. Packing a lunch is a good idea, I would rather eat by a blue lagoon than in a restaurant anyway.
What you DO get is what has to be among the most beautiful scenery on our planet. There are waterfalls galore and wild vegetation unlike any other place. The flowers are so abundant that with the windows down you can smell them while driving.
TIP: Plan your trip in the morning after work traffic. If you truly want to enjoy this trip plan to make the 50 mile journey in much longer than the two hour drive. I would plan at least 4-5 hours to truly enjoy the trip.
