Handspring Treo 300: The Ultimate (2002) Cellphone

by Ed.Williamson Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Dec 16 '02
Pros: A veritable plethora of mind-boggling techno-jollies
Cons: Expensive but weigh the cost and it is well worth it in the long run.
I had been having a running battle within my mind for a long time as to whether or not to get a PDA (Personal Data Assistant). All my experiences with PDAs up until recently were frustrating enough that I stayed with my Day-Timer paper organizer. A ...

Handspring Treo 300 - Ack... Not Quite The Smartest Phone.

Cons: Everything else...
I love the Sprint PCS network, it offers so much. With Sprint PCS Vision, you can have the internet in the palm of your hand. By using a PDA device, you can take the most advantage out of this. I've seen some of the Smart Phone performers on the Sprint ...

Treo 300: It grows on you...

by chenmyu , Aug 21 '02
Pros: Compact size, speakerphone, voice quality
Cons: Difficult navigation, screen lighting, need for stylus + keyboard
Ok, I'm an early adopter and when the treo 300 came out for use on the Sprint network, I had to get it. In the past, I was using a Sprint Touchpoint phone which was about 2" x 1" x 1" and had the most intuitive phone menu around--making the standard for...

Nice PDA - Terrible Phone

by CreamChief , Sep 30 '02
Pros: Nice screen, 16MB, built in keyboard
Cons: Sprint, sprint, sprint
Okay, so the phone itself, as a phone, is not really that bad, but, being that it is a phone on the Sprint Vision network, it is barely worth considering as a phone. Ah, so what is wrong with Sprint you might ask at this point. Great question - check out...

This is the future

by sukim , Apr 22 '03
Pros: the ultimate communication device, integration with outlook, cutting edge programs
Cons: low battery life, clunky flip lid, expensive
Intro
I split my time between 3 metro areas for my work (LA, New York & Las Vegas), and needed a way to keep in touch with my business and personal contacts 24 hours a day via email, instant messaging, text messaging & phone. The Treo 300 is...

My favorite new toy

by jdstevenson , Apr 15 '03
Pros: Perfect small combination of phone and organizer. And opens up interesting new possibilities.
Cons: No memory expansion. No GPS. Single band (no cell roaming). Sprint support blows.
Every so often you make a purchase that turns out to go beyond your expectations. My Treo easily falls into that category. It lets me do things I didn't even think about when I first bought it... And that makes it both useful and fun.

Definitely worth it

by phillyjgs , Mar 08 '03
Pros: Combo PDA, phone, internet & email
Cons: No expandable memory, Sprint (depends on your location)
This product is probably the ultimate in gadgetry out there right now. For those of us who dislike carrying multiple items (pda, phone, beeper) and like to remain connected (at least to our email at ANY time and at ANY place) then you should look at the...

Nice device but shop around first

by net_wizard , Feb 26 '03
Pros: all in one device, color, speakerphone, Palm OS, keyboard
Cons: pricey; no email, voice-recording or expansion slots; battery
I had the Treo 300 for about three months now and am satisfied with. I got this device for free from Sprint PCS as a replacement for an older PDA phone but the list price ($499) is definatly pretty high.

A small business owner's best friend . . .

by tempo02 , Sep 12 '03
Pros: Packs a lot into a small device, easy to use, relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Phone can be cumbersome due to size, not many accessories to add on.
How does a small business operate in today's financially unstable markets? Given the technological advances in today's world it makes perfect sense to cut out the excessive overhead that once plagued many companies. I'll explain how the Treo 300 solves ...

Amazing electronic functionality, Achilles flip lid.

by amidship , Mar 13 '04
Pros: Excellent phone, PDA, web and email fusion for the road warrior. Sprint's support is improving.
Cons: Flip lid design flaw causes chronic lid breaks. Don't consider without Sprint's replacement coverage.
I've had my Treo 300 for nine months now. It is truly an excellent performer, but only electronically. The only downside there is that it's not Javascript enabled, so there's a functional wall you hit when you're using its otherwise robust web ...

Perfect for those who are tired of carrying two devices

by mitch528 , Jan 30 '03
Pros: Small size, consolidates Palm and phone for those who have both
Cons: Big price tag
I have had my Treo300 for about two weeks, and I LOVE it. I don't regret the $450 purchase one bit. For those of you looking into getting one, check out the review at www.the-gadgeteer.com/treo300-review.html - That's what convinced me to buy....

Pros: - Reasonable size and form factor for phone/PDA combo - Keyboard as primary input!!!
Cons: Manufacturing/design defect cause breakage. Weak battery life.
Went through four Treo 180s and on my third Treo 270 within the last 15 months. The reasons shall be explained shortly. I love using this phone/pda as it gives me nearly everything that I really need in a phone/pda combo. Of course being based on the o ...

The Treo and Meo are in Love...

by conradnostromo , Jan 27 '03
Pros: Good concept: simple PDA, Cell, WEB - just what I wanted.
Cons: Sprint PCS Vision package alone does not include "true" email.
I thought about what I wanted in a PDA Web Cellphone and this product comes very close. Here's what I wanted from the PDA part: just a PDA that I can keep lots of info, USB connectivity and sync, an installed base of freeware, and do 95% of the things I...

Miserable Phone and Battery Life

by junlei_dance , Jun 17 '05
Pros: slick look (deceiving) and good pda/phone intergration.
Cons: miserable battery life, constant resets, fragile body, worthless!
We had the worst experience with the TREO 300. Previously used a Kyocera 6035 until baby poured milk over it. So, we are excited about a TREO 300 acquired for $100 at a warranteed ebay seller. It looks good and had a few good reviews. Immediately, ...

I cut my ISP service after I got this phone from Sprint.

by stockyjoe , Oct 01 '02
Pros: The best communicator on the market. Access the world in the palm of your hand.
Cons: 1)No expansion slots for storage. 2)No memory upgrade slot. 3)Battery inaccessible.
I saw this phone on display when I was shopping for a new cell provider (my current contract has expired...finally!). Being a Palm PDA user, I was familiar with the technical specs. The phone came with 16mb of RAM (which is more than enough for an...

Smart Phone, pda and phone in one.

Pros: one device, two functins. currently very reasonable for a pda nad phone!
Cons: thumb keyboard, no graffiti, but upgradable.

A so-so first try

by wa2bux , Nov 30 '02
Pros: Nice integration of Palm Pilot, Phone. Handy to browse the web on the go
Cons: The thing is buggy and clearly first generation - not ready for prime time
I've been waiting for a palm/phone integration for as long as there have been Palm devices and cellphones around, so when my AT&T contract was up, buying this thing was a natural. Well, almost - $500 was quite a bit of change, even for a Palm and a...

Great Palm phone, poor build quality, good for Internet

by arshad , Jan 15 '04
Pros: Palm OS sync, color screen, great Internet connectivity, easy to use keyboard
Cons: Poor build quality, could have better pre-installed software.
Despite its poor build quality, I've found this phone indispensable, and haven't wanted a different one. The main reason I wanted it was the Palm OS - it worked with all of my legacy palm information from years ago, and I know how Palm desktop works. I ...

Treo worth the money

by facci7 , Feb 09 '03
Pros: All-in-One, Web, 3rd party applications, functionality.....
Cons: on the big side,

Great functionality, pathetic mechanical design (lid will break)

by drcontrol , Nov 18 '03
Pros: Screen, keyboard, phone UI, ease of use
Cons: Did I mention the pathetic flip lid?
I bought this device from a friend who had just upgraded to a Treo 600. Lucky him! Although the ergonomics are definitely in the "I can't decide whether to be a phone or a PDA" style, the Treo scores well on interface and functionality. The speed dial ...

Treo good idea but...

by npronpro , Dec 10 '02
Pros: nice thumb keyboard for short messaging; one-handed use for initiating a call; useful quick dialing
Cons: power/data port is very vulnerable and two power pins easily bent
The fatal flaw in this product is the slot on the bottom of the phone where you insert either the data sharing or power male pins. Even with careful use it is almost impossible to avoid bending a pin and then Sprint says you have voided the warranty and...

Treo 300: Right Device, Wrong Cellular Partner

by bfshea , Nov 09 '05
Pros: Fantastic "all-in-one" design that does all things right. Great functionality!
Cons: Horrific customer service/support through Sprint. And it's built to break!
I bought my Treo 300 back in December. I must say within the first day of owning it, it became "the device from Heaven" -- answering all my prayers about what I needed/wanted in a cellular/PDA device. Last week, while answering a call, the...

Pros: Portable email and web in the phone. Good color, visiblity. Adequate memory for this week
Cons: I want smaller, prettier, sturdier and more memory
I've had my Treo 300 for almost 48 hours, and am still learning. The learning process is not that bad for this machine: no worse than any other new phone. It may be easier, since I was able to beam my old address book from my prior Palm V.

Cons: Screen could be better. Takes a few days to get used to. Miss Graffiti.
It took a few days to get used to the keyboard, but nothing major. This is great for the cell phone/pager/pda carrying person. I find that I use my PDA more often as it is now with me ALL THE TIME.

Nice phone, durable, a little bulky but worth the size
by ddeavila ,May 04 '04
Pros: PDA ability, tic-tac keyboard adequate, durability.
Cons: Reception, keyboard algorithms, form-factor for lenghty phone to ear use.
This phone is a Palm PDA and cell-in-one. I've been using it for a year now (had the opportunity to upgrade to the 600 but decided not to).

The battery life is good on this phone but the overall reception I find is lacking over other phones (the antenna is very small and does not extend). Reception seems volatile. The tic-tac keyboard is adequate for me (I have large hands for a woman & short nails -- I do fine). I would think a woman or man with any fingernail length would have a tougher time navigating the keyboard. I find some of the key combo algorithms a little annoying (using the numeric keys with the function key).

I like the Treo 300 more as a PDA and less as a phone. The design is not very ergonomic and holding the unit to your ear for any length of time can be cumbersome. This unit does better with a headset.

For it's cool gadget factor -- it is worth it. Durable, configurable and handy.

Pros: It has A keyboard, phone, color screen
Cons: It is not to good of a color screen
The treo/handspring Is already a good palm with a good color screen and it is a phone. It also has a keyboard and
It is not that much more than a m100 there are cell phones that cost more than that. The m100 or even the m150 are about as much as the handspring and the m100 is not color.

Flip phone flops
by mauibound2 ,Apr 01 '04
Pros: Great combination of PDA and phone
Cons: The flip piece (the earphone) breaks and shorts out.
Great idea for a phone/pda, but I've had two and both of them have failed in the real life test. The first one broke in two at the hinge for the flip phone, the second one shorted out so that the earphone didn't work.

If I was hard on phones, I'd be a little more forgiving, but I don't even use it that much. Basically, if you plan on cradling the phone to your ear, don't consider the Treo 300.

Flaw in Flip Lid Design! Buyer Beware.
by uncbird ,Jan 09 '04
Pros: Nothing worth noting given flip lid problem.
Cons: FALTY FLIP LID.
While I love most of what I got in buying the Treo 300, I am having to return my Treo every 3 to 6 months due to a falty flip lid. It appears that there is a serious flaw in its design as it consistently breaks. It appears to be a systemic problem per conversations with others including sales reps at the local Sprint store. I did not pay $400 for a PDA to be hassled with having to return it for a "new" factory rebuilt Treo every 3 to 6 months. Sprint will not refund my money although they have been very attentive and empathetic to my situation. All that they are willing to do is replace with another rebuilt Treo. I am on my 3 such replacement and I have owned the Treo 300 for a little more than a year.

Buyer beware.

This is by far the best phone, PDA, and web device made yet. I have been surprised at Sprints quality of cell service and competitive rate plans. The PDA is Palm-based and everything from my old Palm Vx transferred over seemlessly. Now I never have to re-enter phone numbers into my phone & palm. It synchronizes easily to my Mac. I love it!

Really a slick offering except for the con mentioned above. I worked around this by creating an account on my personal ATTBI with an auto format to a SPRINTPCS email so that I would be notified when a new e-mail came in. Battery is sucked quickly when using the web. Great tool, though. I'm impressed. Fortunately, my company is paying for mine!
