Pros: Characters that come to life in five stories. Not his worst work. Cons: Not his best
This post is part of the Stephen King Write Off, Part Two hosted by TheUnknown285. Please take a look at some of the other entries by participants listed at the bottom of this review. Though the major consensus is that King is just riding out...
Pros: First two stories, and last Cons: Third and fourth stories
Stephen King made a name for himself 25 years ago writing horror and has become the bestselling writer in the genre ever. Now that we've covered the obvious, Stephen King has proven with his new book, Hearts in Atlantis, that horror-be-damned, he's just...
Pros: Characters are not just "bags of bones," they're very real and very poignant; King really knows how to get the details of American life just right Cons: The plots of the two longest stories are stretched thin; the padding really shows
Stephen King has been waging a war with his image for the last eighteen years. Ever since the release of his collection of novellas, "Different Seasons," King has been trying to persuade his public of adoring horror fans that he's not just a...
Pros: King's ability to build a story Cons: disjoint parts = incomplete whole
The last Stephen King novel I read was The Tommyknockers, and it was, to put it politely, awful. Up until that book I had devoured everything King wrote -- classics like Christine and Cujo and -- best of all, The Stand. He...
Pros: great interaction of characters, and there is a moral - look for it Cons: the tower looms ever nearer
This is the story of paths crossing, lives changing, and more friends for the Tower. King has tempted us for years with writings about the elusive Tower, the Crimson King, beams, breakers, and the gunslinger. I can’t remember when I first...
Pros: It is Stephen King. Cons: Not enough information on my favorite character.
Well, I finally did it. I decided now was the time to get a library card. I love to read, but with kids it is almost impossible. Now that my oldest is four, I thought it would be a good idea to take her to the library (she also loves to read). While...
Pros: A great book of short stories, exciting, interesting, and inspiring. Cons: Not King's usual type of stories.
I recently got this book as a Valentine's gift. I couldn't wait to start reading it. I love Stephen King and his work. I couldn't put it down and I had it read in 3 days.
Hearts in Atlantis is a collection of five short stories that are all...
Pros: cool blending of interweaving stories, each of which is rich and insightful Cons: ambitious idea breaks down with tag-team characters whose interplay doesn't add up to King's conclusions
HOW I GOT HERE A friend handed me a copy of this book after I'd come back from the film of the same name. I hadn't liked the film whose main character, Bobby Dearfield, had been reduced to a kind of narrative protagonist - like Nick in The Great ...
Oh no. This is a joke, right? <tentative laugh> Someone’s just messin’ with my mind, right? Is it April Fools Day already? Cuz if somebody isn’t pulling my leg here, I’d have to say—what on Earth happened to Stephen King? This garbage that some...
Pros: A good first story in this book Cons: Dwindling interest thereafter
I love good literature, a good read, and a good suspense story. I think Stephen King tried earnestly to combine all three in Hearts in Atlantis, but the result of his effort left me disappointed.
Pros: strong characters, interesting stories Cons: a hair on the long and dry side
Stephen King’s Heart’s in Atlantis is not the best book he has ever written. However, it is an interesting read, and worth a look if you are either a fan of his work or a child of the 60’s.
Pros: "Stand by Me"-esque writing style that evokes a strong sense of nostalgia. Cons: Only glimpses of certain plot details, not quite enough development.
I've been a relative newcomer to Stephen King as, for the most part, his horror was too horrific and I never found the softer, "serious" stuff like Different Seasons and Deloris Claiborne until recently. I have, though, become a voracious...
Pros: King compels you to tears in this heartfelt book. Cons: there are none
Steven King does a marvelous job in this book. It brings out something deep within in you, and reveals the heart ache the characters feel, and you might feel as well. It's a story of how the 60's changed the world forever. And from the prospectives of...
