  • A mixed bag, but still an HP

Pros: Powerful HP. Nothing better. Period.
Cons: HP has decided to borrow from Casio in a few areas.

Summary: A few weeks ago my trusty HP48SX, which has served faithfully for 16 years, vanished. And so it was that I was in need of a new calculator with at least the same power as the old one. And so I purchased a brand new HP50G through Amazon.com Okay. ... read more

  • Great calculator, buy it now and ditch the weak TI products

Pros: RPN, programmabiltiy, solid construction, better than anything Texas instruments has ever made
    Cons: Battery life, user manual

Summary: During an early circuits lecture the instructor offhand mentioned that a way to tell the difference between a green graduate and a seasoned professional is that the new grad is still using the ti-89 and the seasoned professional has adopted a RPN HP ... read more

Pros: good contrast and resolution screen, fairly easy to use, SD slot, intuitive units/CAS system
Cons: CHEAP plastic, buttons are slightly stiff

Summary:      I bought and used a Texas Instrument TI-89titanium before I bought this. It was a fine calculator, but the HP-50g lured me in with people commenting on how RPN would "change your life". Well ok, they didn't say that exactly, but ... read more

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Oct 12, 2008
Pros: Does what I need it to, although it feels more awkward than the old 48G
Cons: Eats batteries, slower than before.

Summary: My first graphing calculator was an HP 48G I purchased in high school. It worked nicely, and I sat down learned it's functions thoroughly. 14 years later, I figured it would be nice to get a newer model and retire the 48G for home office use. Having ... read more

  • TI fan won over by HP!

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Feb 6, 2007
Pros: Powerful! Intuitive. The best calculator available for a serious student or professional
Cons: A small learning curve moving from TI. Nice but bulky carrying case.

Summary: I have been a die-hard TI fan since the early 1990's. I am a student and professional engineer and I decided to try the HP 50g because HPs are typically the engineer's tool of choice. After a couple of hours with the manual and a quick learning curve, ... read more
