Pros: Better than Dialup Cons: Slow speeds Unreliable Expensive Lacking customer service
Summary: In my lifetime I’ve dealt with dial up, AT&T DSL, and now HughesNet. Where I am now living it isn’t possible to get DSL so it’s either dial up or satellite internet. HughesNet is what we resorted to over 2 years ago. Although ... read more

Pros: Simple to set up and use. The hardware has been reliable. Cons: Broadband prices, dial-up speed.
Summary: HughesNet advertises "high speed internet", but that is just plain untrue. A big part of the problem is the limits of the technology. The service uses satellite communicaitons, so there is a limited bandwidth each satellite can ... read more

Pros: Available in the most remote parts of the earth. Cons: Slower than driving to civilization for a decent connection, very expensive.
Summary: Satellite internet sucks. It's really not Hughesnet's fault, it's the reality of the situation. When the first and second hop of your internet connection spans about 46,000 miles, things are going to be slow. But there are two things ... read more

Summary: We moved from the city limits to about 10 miles out, and have no high speed Internet options except satellite. There were a couple of satellite options to choose from, and the Hughesnet representative on the phone told me how they were so much ... read more

Pros: Fairly reliable. I don't lose my connection when it rains or the wind is blowing. Cons: Slow as Christmas. When my contract expires, so will my service.
Summary: I know we've all seen the Hughes Net commercials with that annoying woman on them who dresses like she can't figure out that she's a 40 and never had the figure for the stuff she wears anyway. By the way, what's wrong with her mouth???? But anyway, I ... read more

Pros: Sometimes it's fast. Cons: No customer service. No customer service. No customer service.
Summary: I have been a customer for over five years; but this was the last straw. I used to live in a VERY remote part of Idaho that did not have city water, telephone lines and barely had electrical. So Hughes Net was our only option for internet ... read more

Pros: The connection worked only on immacculately clear days. Cons: forced to perform de-install of equipment upon cancelling "free-trial period" or else you incur fees.
Summary: Do not deal with this company. They have more caveats in their terms than a lawyer. They claim "free trial period for 30 days" but they forget to mention that if you cancel the service, you are required to send back the equipment

Pros: It works better than dial-up most of the time. Cons: The service is terrible.
Summary: I picked HughesNet from a very limited set of options, living away from DSL and cable. I wish I had not now. There is a huge penalty, as in $700, if you leave them before your 2 year contract is up. Their tech support is located in
