Pros: Well-deserved world fame, delicious authentic Hunan food Cons: Can be crowded
The best part of doing freelance work in San Francisco is the opportunity to work in many neighborhoods and sample new lunch spots. The Hunan, though venerable to many, is my latest "new" spot.
Pros: Large portions of what was originally farm meals for workers doing heavy work. Cons: Unless you are a true glutton, you probably should carry away a sizable doggy bag.
The original HUNAN RESTAURANT is on Sansome Street in downtown San Francisco, but there are several branches of this family enterprise. I prefer the one on Bryant Street. It is just as crowded at lunch or dinner, but one escapes the tourist trade....
Pros: Fresh, flavorful, mouth-watering, varied menu Cons: Not much ambience - it's a warehouse!
Hunan's, at the corner of Broadway and Sansome, is the quintessential Hunan-style restaurant in San Francisco. Housed in an old warehouse near Levi's Plaza, Hunan's is one of a chain of three or four restaurants created by Henry Chung.
Pros: The best Chinese food I've ever had Cons: none
When I talk about San Francisco, I always bring up The Hunan. When I find out someone is going to San Fran, I tell them they must go to the Hunan. Coit Tower? No big deal. Fisherman's Warf? No big deal. The Hunan? Oh man! That's one reason I want...
Pros: When they say "hot," they mean hot! Fresh, unique, addictive food. Cons: There aren't any restaurants outside of San Francisco. If only I had a million dollars.....
I've been to countless Chinese restaurants in the United States and Henry's Hunan in San Francisco is the only one that still excites me - my mouth is watering now just thinking about it. I lived in San Francisco for 18 years before moving to Seattle. ...
Pros: The single best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to Cons: None!
New Yorker Magazine called The Hunan the best Hunan restaurant in the WORLD. And though I've not been to every county in the world, I agree. The Harvest Pork is a delight to eat, but then, what isn't here -- including the pan fried dumplings, which are...
Pros: Hunan food at its best Cons: Not for timid tummies
If you have the stomach for spicy food, this is it. Hunan has a wide, wonderful variety of Chinese food that just writing about it makes me want to go there right now.
How I found this place was through a work assignment in downtown SF. I...
Pros: Very delicious, affordable, would travel 1.5 hours for it. Cons: No real cons.
This is a very popular Chinese restaurant in San Francisco. Being Chinese-American myself, I have visited many a restaurant. Me, along with other friends from where I live in Davis, whenever we travel to SF in a large group (+10 people), we want to go...
Pros: excellent food. big visible kitchen. plenty of tables for diners. MEAT PIE! Cons: one time took a little longer than i expected. but 1/30 experiences ain't bad!
Oh golly. I am in love with Hunan. LOVE. It's wonderful. If you've never been GO!! and order the Diane's Meat Pie and Sautéed Brocolli (its beef and brocolli, minus the beef, with the same great sauce/taste!) I have only been to the one on Sansome....so can't tell ya about the others.
Pros: Very tasty food, reasonable prices Cons: Not so good if one of your party dislikes spicy food.
Been going here for over 20 years. Try Marty's special or Henry's special is my recommendation. It's crowded for lunch in the week, but otherwise quite accessible.
I would not recommend visiting here. I ordered the shrimp chow mein lunch special, and everything was covered in grease. The shrimp were overcooked and chewy, and the vegetables were barely noticeable.
