  • Great value for fine quality viewing DVDs

    May 20, 2003 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: A fine DVD player with lots of features. Good value.
Cons: Ultra-slow JPEG image formation. Remote complex, unfriendly. Annoying JVC-logo when CDs played through TV.

Summary: As a DVD player, the JVC XV-S502 works just fine and has all the features and quality you would expect. The remote control, however, is less intuitive and more complex than we would like. The reason we chose the JVC XV-S502 (over competing ... read more

  • Great Progressive DVD Player

    Jan 28, 2003 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: Plays DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3, JPEG Disk. Optional Progressive output.
Cons: The "looks" of the unit are underwhelming, and the menu system could use some work.

Summary: I have this unit hooked up via component video to a Toshiba TV, and the image quality is fantastic. This unit has very good scaling when bringing a movie from anamorphic wide screen down to letterbox display - shimmers and moire are virtually absent. ... read more

  • High end picture quality - entry-level price

    Jan 27, 2003 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Very good picture quality; Progressive scan capability; user configurable video adjustment
Cons: Locks up occaisionally on multi-layered disks and some mp3s; slow to load jpegs; mediocre remote

Summary: Let's face it, these days the difference between high end and low end electronics increasingly comes down to features, not picture or sound quality. A good example of this trend is the JVC S502SL DVD player. While it lacks the features and sturdy ... read more

Pros: All the features I wanted at a great price!
Cons: None yet as I can see

Summary: Perhaps you remember me as having all sorts of issues with my Samsung DVD-709 player. Well, recently I replaced it with this JVC model. I originally bought one without the box and it ended up pixelizing any movie I played so I returned it to get one in ... read more

Pros: Versatile dvd player. slim design.
    Cons: None

Summary: I have done some researching on a dvd player that I can be happy with, can do a lot of functions and be upgradable to a component t.v. and the JVC XV-S502SL is the one. For starters the slim design makes it possible for you to place the player anywhere ... read more

    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Plays VCD, S-VCD, DVD, CD, MP3
Cons: the CD tray feels little flimsy and cheap.

Summary: This unit is great. It plays all the S-vcds I made using tmpgenc encoder and dvd movie factory from ulead. the only caveat is that on the tmpgenc, make sure you reduce the CBR down to 2450, at the full 2520, the video tends to jerk and skip ... read more

  • great video player

    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: plays CD, CDRW, MP3 CD's is a progressive scan player
Cons: Does not play DVD audio, SACD, HDCD. Poor audio decoders

Summary: The real strength for this player is the quality of video it gives, whether in progressive scan or not. In progressive scan, if the famous chroma bug is there, it is not all that apparent. I have also yet to have any technical problems with the player, ... read more

Pros: Very versatile, almost every format, slim, amazing picture, feature packed
Cons: Randomness of MP3s and jpeg playback

Summary: I did quite a lot of research on DVDs, looked at the Sonys, the Toshibas, and a few of the high end ones. I ended up getting a 600BK (epinions doesnt have this as an option, there are only a few features difference) (Dolby Audio, Better ... read more
