Pros: Is pretty I suppose Cons: Poor quality...poor customer service.....poor operation
Purchased a John Deere L100 in late 04 because my cheap rear engined 8 hp Murray rider finally gave it up after 8 years (much of the first years riding over some pretty dusty, rough terrain). I was at a new house with a bigger, nice smooth sodded ...

Pros: Ride, solid feel, accesories Cons: Dealer service & knowledge
Talk to several dealers. The knowledge amount varies considerably. I was set to buy the Freedom 42 deck at the first dealer after checking out the website and going to the dealership and test driving several models.
I looked at the LT180 and...

Pros: Sharp turns, quality motor, easy mower deck removal. Cons: Too many safety features, price. Placement of the cruise control.
My old 300 gave up the ghost so I traded it in on an LX277.
I had some doubt about downsizing but figured that all I am going to do is mow with it. I no longer had need for the blade and tiller either. The one feature that I miss on the
LX277...

Pros: Good power, good fuel economy, easy starting. Cons: Price, defective mower deck, poor warranty support, poor customer service.
My husband and I purchased a new John Deere LA100 from Lowes in May, 2007. On June 13, 2008, the right mower spindle tore out of the mower deck while I was mowing a level lawn. I expected the deck to be covered by the standard 2-year warranty on ...

Pros: Quiet, strong Kawasaki Engine, easy to remove deck Cons: Safety Feature mowing in reverse
After owning many disposable lawn mowers such as Craftsman, Snapper, and Cub Cadet, my wife and I decided to buy a real Lawn Mower. The mower was for her as she uses it to trim around our 3 acre pond and the many trees on our farm. I use a 72" Rhino...

Pros: Cuts down the time it takes to mow your lawn Cons: Cant mow in reverse due to safety feature
I purchased a John Deer LX 277 this past summer. This lawn mower is one real go-getter. I purchased a John Deere 111 in 1989 and I got it used and it is still going, but we needed another one due to the expansion of our yard. The LX 277 comes with a...

Pros: Easy to operate, Freedom deck, safety features, access to parts and accessories Cons: Expensive, rattles
I bought this last year after using a Yamaha lawn tractor for years. The Yamaha was really nice so I thought the John Deere would have a tough time filling its shoes. The John Deere was a pleasant surprise. It is very smooth and refined. The deck...

Pros: Mows grass excellent Cons: None
This tractor does an excellent job mowing. The hydro transmission is wonderful with the foot controls. It has plenty of power to pull a trailer or other stuff. I use it in the winter with a snowblower and absolutely love it. The only problem I have had...

My John Deere LX279 is the best.......
by acetone7 ,Jul 27 '04
Pros: Smooth ride, powerhouse , fun to drive, hydrostatic trans is the way to go. Cons: That I didn't buy one sooner!!!!!
My LX279 has a 17 HP Liquid Cooled engine and a 48" deck. This thing is like driving a luxury car compared to the 16.5/42" Craftsman I have. I wish I had more grass than I do have so I can continue mowing. This tractor stickers at $5,200 brand new and now I know why. I am the 2nd owner and will more than likely be the last.

Not good Value for the money
by atractorman ,Aug 09 '04
Pros: Nice Looking Cons: Expensive and unreliable.
Everything about this tractor and John Deere is way too expensive. You can only buy parts from an authorized John Deere dealer and you'll pay a lot more than an equivalent part from any other manufacturer. I was lucky enough to find a Fram Tough Guard oil filter instead of the John Deere and it was better and 1/2 the price! And I had one John Deere dealer sell me a used part as new and then claim I did the swap. I got really upset, threatened to sue and they finally investigated and admitted it was their fault. I contacted the factory about the problems I was having and they said go back to the dealer, that's it! I'll never buy another John Deere.

John Deere LX 288 with 48" deck.
by hogrider02 ,Oct 21 '03
Pros: The hydrostatic drive is plush. Cons: If you need to get the grass cut don't get one of these!
My dad bought an LX288 brand new 3 years ago.
Within 1 month of ownership it was already back in the shop for repairs. There is some kind of airflow sensor in the carburetor that won't let the engine run unless the air filter is brand new / clean condition. The least bit of dirt and it shuts down. I can't even finish mowing once without having to stop and replace/clean the filter. The mower is now back in the shop with a broken connecting rod -this is not covered by the warranty even though the mower is only 3 years old - and it ain't cheap to fix. If you need a reliable mower and are not a good mechanic stay far away from this one - I've got a 12 year old MTD mower that will run circles around the John Deere.

Worth the price
by lumpulus ,Feb 04 '05
Pros: Powerful
Comfortable
Runs all day on a tank of gas Cons: Reverse switch a pain sometimes.
My family has always owned John Deere tractors, so when I bought my new house, I shopped for mowers and settled on the LX279 with the Powerflow Bagger and 48" Mower deck.
I spent summers as a kid mowing lawns for spending money, so I consider myself pretty knowledgeble about different kinds of riding mowers. I've used Cub Cadets, Ariens, Toro, Murray, Snapper, Honda, and The Deere.
I think the best thing you can say about John Deere products is they LAST. My brother still has the Deere tractor we used as kids THIRTY years ago. He takes good care of it, and it looks like the day it was delivered.
I've had my LX279 since 2000, and aside from changing the oil, feeding it gas, and getting the deck leveled, I've had ZERO problems with it.
Our neighbors are always complimenting us about our lawn, saying it looks like a golf green.
I couldn't be happier with my LX279

JD - Not what they used to be
by atractorman ,Oct 03 '04
Pros: Nice looking Cons: Unreliable, Parts are Expensive, Lousy customer Service, not much good that I can say.
It seems that John Deere has decided to trade it's reputation for profit by building tractors not worth what they are asking for in $$. They were supposed to be the best but now they are full of problems and don't even think they will fix them. After paying top dollar you expect top quality, you're better off buying a Kubota. I had one John Deere dealer sell me a used part as new and I had to threaten to sue them to get it resolved. Parts prices are way out of line compared to other manufacturers.

When you can afford better than the average
by soccerche ,May 03 '04
Pros: Well built, quiet, comfortable, solid, handling, great cut. Cons: None, except some would say the price, but to me it is worth it.
We purchased the LX 277 last year to mow one and one half acres. We previously owned a large store brand and I wish that we had just bitten the bullet and purchased a John Deere some years ago. Let's face it, we spend a lot of time on these tractors and it is not a place to go cheap. I went cheap and regretted it some years ago.
The JD is expensive compared to other brands but in my mind worth the cost. It is more comfortable, quieter, reliable, solid and better built by a margin significant enough to justify the cost. The Kawasaki engine is quiet and runs great. I weight 250 pounds and it hauls me around he yard without a whimper.

One tough tractor!
by idlejunk ,Nov 11 '05
Pros: Quiet, Comfortable, Servicable, Welded Frame, Kawasaki Engine, Tough... Cons: None
I own two Deere's, a 2004 L118 and a 2001 LX277. When I bought the L118, I believed it to be the toughest of the inexpensive lawn tractors - haven't been disappointed a bit. However - I just bought a used LX277 and found it to be one tough tractor. It is many times quieter than the L118 and is far more servicable. Easy to tell this is a tractor built to last a lifetime. Well worth the price - especially one that was lightly used for $1200 bucks...
