Pros: Fun to read, somehow manages to be serious and lighthearted at the same time Cons: Very different from Carr's other books, very outlandish plot devices

Pros: Zippy, operatic speculative fiction with a point. Cons: Sometimes maudlin -- but only in context.
If you've read Caleb Carr's previous books -- The Alienist and Angel of Death -- you might expect Killing Time to be a Victorian murder mystery. And you'd be right ... except that it's set three decades in our future.

Pros: Page turner, pretty good writing. Cons: Really just a dime store novel.
