Pros: like the look and counter depth. Cons: poor quality, defects and not notified of defects
We were never notified of wiring being installed in foam to tightly in freezer door, that ice and water would fail, Kitchen Aid stepped up to the plate only after repeated calls and replaced door, door does not line up with other door and according to ...
Pros: Attractive design; easy to clean, and to configure shelving. Cons: Lots to list in 15 words; better since the repair.
UPDATE AS OF 1/25/05: This is another entry in my continuing saga concerning our side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. Yesterday, the appliance repair technician arrived with our new freezer-side door. Upon arrival, the technician removed the door ...
Pros: Looks great, nice finish Cons: Noisy, the fan runs 23 hours a day
I bought this fridge as part of a 4 product package from Western Appliance in San Jose, CA. The minor issues I had just transacting the purchase should have been my first subtle clue. Upon receiving the unit and having it installed it was very loud. A ...
Pros: Good looks, water and ice in the door. Cons: Interior refrigerator space.
When we remodeled our kitchen about 2 1/2 years ago, we got all new appliances. All of the appliances we selected were stainless steel. The refrigerator also needed to be a "counter-depth" model, because of the limited amount of space in my kitchen. It ...
Pros: Stylish, versatile and counter-depth Cons: not good for large platters
As I have mentioned in a few of my other reviews and my profile, I am an Interior Designer. For the past five years I have worked for a building contractor and my primary function is to help home buyers make selections for their new homes that are both...
KitchenAid: Not so top of the line after all. by mcypress ,Oct 16 '09
Pros: Looks pretty. Cons: Unreliable, bad service, generally a POS!
I purchased a stainless side by side with water/ice in the door in May02. In the first three years I had a repairman out on a bi-monthly basis because everything on the fridge side kept freezing. Finally after three years of having to take off work to wait for the repair "moron" they replaced the fan and it has worked reasonably well for the last three years--only overly cooling the fridge side but correcting itself before acutally freezing items. That is, until this week (Oct09) when it began freezing everything on the fridge side again and the fan runs constantly. I thought I was buying a top of the line prouduct but it appears KitchenAid (Whirlpool) no longer lives up to that reputation. From the reviews I have read this is not an uncommon problem in these refridgerators and they are a fire hazard. This was a very expensive MISTAKE and one that I will not be repeating. I better replace this POS before it burns down my house. Whatever happened to customer service?
Pros: It looks very nice in my kitchen and is very easy to clean. Cons: I never get ice, a cube is always stuck or the water line freezes.
I have had this product now for about 2 years, most of the time I can not get ice because a cube gets stuck in the tray. I have contacted Kitchen Aid and their customer service in one word...STINKS! I tell everyone that is about to redo their kitchen do NOT make the same mistake I made. I also have a kitchen Aid dishwasher and it does not work well! I should have done more research!
Do not buy this product, only trouble by badexp ,Mar 19 '07
Pros: Good looking Cons: Defective design
I bought this side by side refrigerator in august 2004 for a house that we use 8 weeks in the year. Every time I have lots of people home, the refrigerator does not work. The problem: the ventilation blocks from the freezer to the refrigerator when it is full and the partition between the two freezes so that cold air no longer flows into the refrigerator. This was a stupid purchase. It is a defective design. No solution.
Our KitchenAid was a year out of warranty when it stopped cooling failed. the lights worked but the freezer and refrigerator did not get cold. The repair person came out three times and replaced both thermostats and the defrost control board twice before determining that the entire refrigerator was unrepairable. But the good news was that they offered me a 15% discount for an new $2000 refrigerator. Yeah, right.
Don't waste your money on KitchenAid. They are the worst of the worst. Since we have a 30 year-old GE unit that works flawlessly, I know that a refrigerator should last more than 6 years
Nice looking. expensive, and poor reliability by chucky03 ,Aug 03 '06
Pros: Vey nice looking. Easy to change water filter. Cons: POOR RELIABILITY. refrigerator cools unevenly
I just wish the Japanese made refrigerators like they make cars...this would be a good world as far as refrigerators go. About 2 months after my year warranty expired, I noticed the center frame and frame around the freezer got extremely hot. I cleaned the condenser coils and checked the condenser cooling fan for operation and the problem persisted. It seems that the compressor is failing, and I am now waiting for a service repairman to replace the compressor. Fortunately the compressor is warranted for six years, but it seem a shame to have a refrigerator fail after just over one year. The thing is, what refrigerator can you buy these days that will hold up and be reliable for years to come?
KitchenAid-Don't buy it!! by walteraymen ,Oct 12 '05
Pros: Good advertising. Cons: The worst in reliability and terrible value for the money.
Every single KitchenAid Appliance I have purchased in the last five years has been a tragic disappointment including the Side by Side refrigerator. The shelves keep falling out of the tracks and the compressor has died. Premium price for major disappointments. Blender blew up, dishwasher (architectural series) panel only works on one setting, mixer gears are shearing. Absolute junk. Don't be a dummy and go for the advertising.
We have had this model since 2001. In that time, the compressor has failed (just after the warranty expired), the water and ice dispenser ceased to function after the door rubbed the connecting wires raw (fixed at my expense), and finally, the door to the butter compartment broke off. You may see pictures here:
Basically, the mounting piece rotted and fell out. I sent a detailed letter to Whirlpool (parent company) requesting they repair it. Although they sympathize, they will not help me on this LEMON. The only way to fix it is to replace the entire door. Cost = $432 + shipping.
Unreliable, Can't Get Parts by mcbeth4 ,Oct 19 '04
Pros: Attractive unit, side-by-side is nice, ice and water dispenser are good ideas Cons: unit fails prematurely and you can't get parts
Beware of purchasing this unit. The evaporator fan in our unit failed in less than two years after purchase. This fan circulates cold air from the bottom of the freezer to the top of the freezer and over into the refrigerator compartment. We were away for a week. The ice in the icemaker at the top of the freezer melted, ran out through the door ice dispenser and ruined our hardwood floor in the kitchen. After much effort, we learned that the bad part is not under warranty (read your warranties carefully!). It has been over a month and we have been unable to get a replacement part. This tells us that the failure of this fan is a common problem, swamping KitchenAid with orders for replacement parts. Imagine being without a refrigerator for over a month, especially an expensive unit like this.
