Pros: Funny. Thought provoking. Did I say it's funny? Cons: Sometimes gets into frat boy humor.
If you are offended by humor that is based in irreverance about religious traditions - your own, or that of others - then Christopher Moore's Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal is probably not for you. It is a book that ...
Pros: incredibly funny and engaging novel. Moore's humor is a treat! Cons: this book will offend some. Lots of adolescent humor and colorful language.
Usually when I go book shopping, I look for something contemporary and thought- provoking. Recently when I walked into a local bookstore, I bumped into a table of “buy two get one free” books. Always ready for a bargain, I scanned the titles - nothing ...
Pros: Laugh out loud and share it with your friends funny Cons: getting over the initial guilt of buying it
It is very rare that I purchase a hardcover fiction book because they tend to be fairly expensive. But that is exactly what happened with Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff. I was standing in the bookstore waiting for my boyfriend and glancing over the...
Pros: Laugh-out-loud funny! Good light reading Cons: Don't blame me if you burn in hell!
Im going to hell. That was my first thought upon reading just a few pages of Lamb. The thought would bother me a bit more if I believed in hell, but laughing at fictional irreverent beginnings of Christs life sure brought up all...
Pros: Moore's fabulously hysterical prose. The complete researched nature of the tale. Cons: It turned The Bottom Line into a newt.
Anybody familiar with the Christian Bible, or Kevin Smith's movie Dogma, know's that after Christ's birth the story of his life skips directly to when he's in his thirties. Well it's been decided that it's now time for these missing years to be ...
Pros: Laugh out loud funny, Incredibly smart Cons: Devout Christians who love this book will burn for eternity
Ever wonder what happened to the 30 years in Christ's life that were left out of the bible? It's right here. Want to know the real relationship between Jesus (Joshua) and Mary Magdeline or how he was able to write the beatitudes (blessed are the ...
Pros: Another great Moore book. Put it on the top 100. Cons: If you believe THE BIBLE is the "Word of God," DON'T READ THIS.
Christopher Moore is quite the risk-taker. Perhaps he looked at himself and saw that he had the satirical talent of Vonnegut and Adams; the style of Barry; and the literary construction skills of a young John Irving, and decided that he was ready to...
Pros: Irreverent, Hilarious, Hysterical!
Prepare to lose yourself in adventure!
Cons: This book may not be suitable for avid church-goers, non-fiction readers, or humorless individuals.
If you are in the market for fun, Lamb is the book for you. In fact, prepare to keep replacing your copy, as friends and family members will forever be trying to beg, borrow, and steal this novel from your possession! When I first discovered ...
Pros: Very funny; thought provoking; makes one examine their beliefs Cons: Relationship between Biff and Raziel left hanging. Did Jesus have to curse?
I went to the bookstore a couple of days ago looking for a book. I found it, and on the way to check out I came across this book. I had never read anything by Christopher Moore before (I hadn't even heard of the guy). However, with a title like that how...
Pros: Humorous but respectful take on Jesus' childhood Cons: Some of the humor too annoying for words
I recently read Lamb on a recommendation from a co-worker, whose opinion I wasn't sure if I could trust. I quite enjoyed this book, although some of it was irksome to me. Let me start right off the bat by saying that I'm Jewish, and so unlikely to be ...
Witty, Smart: it is brilliant ! by bgpinion ,May 08 '06
Pros: Smart, witty, funny and very imaginative. I loved reading it. Cons: For some it may be offending (religious aspect and lots of sex).
This book was recommended by a friend. Must say at first I was little sceptical not having read this author's previous books. Would hate to reveal too much about the book and ruin the pleasure of reading for you.
You should read this book for pure pleasure of being exposed to good writing. Smart, witty, funny and very imaginative. Loved reading it. For some it may be offending (religious aspect, lots of sex); however as the author says it too - it is fiction. Was a delight to read and imagine what Christ's childhood-teenage years would/could have been..."human" like the rest of us.
~ short chapters that keep you reading
~ many references to other religions and ideaologies that keep things interesting
~ "best-friends" notion is beautifully covered
~ lots of sex: had other friends read this book as well and we all agreed that there was a lot of sex mentioned. We came to the conclusion of "well.. what do you expect.. we are talking about teenage boys in an era when people only lived to their mid 30s-40s and married at 11-13."
Recommending this book to all of my friends who have not read it already.
