Pros: Learn how to take over someone's body with a simple hand of poker.
Cons: Fear poker forevermore.
This was the first Tim Powers' book I read. I must warn those of you considering reading it not to start it on a work night.

The secret history of Las Vegas

Pros: A strong novel and a powerful example of the "secret history" genre.
Cons: Only loosely tied to prequels/sequels, when it's an obvious candidate for extended dedicated series treatment.
