Fridge Phonics: Unsung LeapFrog Product

by calliaz , Jan 01 '05
Pros: Large letters, songs that aren't annoying, letters that stick easily, really valuable learning tool.
Cons: Replacement letters are expensive, does not have lowercase letters or numbers.
When I tell my friends how much I love the LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set, they all look at me as if I have two heads. Most have never even see it before. Well, those people are really missing out on a wonderful educational toy. The Fridge ...

I can't get that song out of my head!

by maegennoel , Jan 19 '08
Pros: big letters ,no lose magnets, sticks well
Cons: weird sounds, confusing
This was a gift for my one year old son. I also have a 3 year old son who probably will benefit more from it. I like most leap frog toys for the simple fact that they are trying to teach something. This one is not the best, but not the worst. Here are ...

Dangerous to children!!!
by thinkzinc ,Oct 28 '06
Pros: None.
Cons: Confuses children with wrong letters of the alphabet.
Too bad the lowest rating is 1 star, because it deserves no stars. One of every three letters was wrong. I wonder how many parents take the time to look at this learning toy. Do you want your child confusing 1/3 of the alphabet? When my son put the X into the thing, it said, "T". I was alarmed, so I put each of the letters in, finding a whopping 9 pieces that were wrong! I repeated the test with the same results. There are fresh batteries in the toy too. I'm appalled that this item is not recalled.

Best Gift My Three Year Old Received
by kapchis ,Feb 25 '04
Pros: Easy to use, Large magnets, Clear Sounds
Cons: Numbers would be a great addition
My oldest just received the LeapFrog Fridge Magnets for her birthday and we've seen a huge leap (no pun intended) in her letter recognition. She's been far behind her other friends in the ABC 123 department, but she's now sounding out the letters when she puts them in the little speaker. What's more exciting is my 1 year old is copying her big sis and is also trying to repeat the sounds! The magnets have worked well at distracting them and keeping them occupied while I cook dinner. And this way, I can join in and help when needed (or break up a fight), as they're not all the way in the playroom.

Great toy..if it works right
by cemeyer717 ,Jan 10 '07
Pros: Great way to learn ABC's and numbers
Cons: I have had 2 defective sets to return in 3 months
My daughter received this as a birthday gift in Oct. and it would say the wrong letters-so we returned it and tried it out in the store so we knew it worked. She loves it and plays with it all the time. Well her great grandma bought her the letter and numbers one for Christmas.. and once again it says the wrong letters and numbers. I thought nothing of the first one but now I wonder how many are wrong--- Great toy but check to make sure it works right.

Great with Letter Factory Video too!
by chellman ,Feb 12 '05
Pros: Works with video reinforcement, good size for little fingers, magnets work on any metal.
Cons: no lower case, no numbers, easy to lose pieces.
This is a great toy We got one when our twins were 1 yr old and they loved it. They were already learning letters and we didn't know what to do to help them, but this was a great idea, and we have a play room that has large metal bookshelves that are perfect for this toy so we don't use it on our fridge--it works on anything metal.

The toy is great, the reviews already say most of it in terms of how it works and what it does. The thing to know is that it works with the video Letter Factory, it's a great compliment to each other. After a very brief try out, we immediately got another set for the other twin. Our toys are a mess, and it's hard to find these little ones, but we usually can find one base and several letters at any rate so it's not bad as far as the parts go. We're not very careful with sorting and keeping our toys nice. This is a good one, pick it up while you can.

We All Love It!
by gradlass ,Feb 01 '06
Pros: Great product and will "grow" with my daughter.
Cons: Letters have to to be placed in "just so".
My 21 month old daughter loves this toy. This Christmas, it was her favorite one and we had trouble getting her to open the rest. We had it set up on the fridge as soon as the presents were finished. She can't go in the kitchen without pressing the note to make it play the Alphabet Song and then she just sings and dances along. Using the letter "magnets" is a little bit harder for her to do, but she can still get them in with a little help from Mom. Even when she doesn't get them on the machine, she still loves to manipulate them all over the fridge. I think this was the best thing we have gotten her so far because I can see her using this for many years (understanding letter/sound relationships, developing phonemic awareness, creating first words, etc). It's so much better than the simple magnetic letters from my day! I recommend it for ages 24 months and up!

Teaches letters in a fun way
by anniewvfan ,Jan 11 '05
Pros: two volumes levels, cute song, easy to manipulate
Cons: none
We bought this for my 3-year-old son (Daniel) and my 1-year-old daughter (Emma). They both love it! I am amazed that Emma is learning her letters at such a young age. She can pick out the letter "E" and says, "E, eh, Emma!" Wow!

The magnetic set plays the same song for each letter. A song that is sure to get stuck in your head. (B says, "Bah." B says, "Bah." Every letter makes a sound. B says "Bah." and so on and so on with each letter.) The letter are easy to manipulate into the base. The toy has two volume levels (much appreciated). There is also a button you can push that will sing the ABC song.

One suggestion for improving this product: it would be nice if there were a storage place for the letters. A few of our letters are MIA, mostly due to the fact that Emma enjoys pulling them off of the fridge and throwing them.

This is a great learning product. I've recommended it to several of my friends. A solid "buy" in my book.

Great learning toy from Leapfrog!
by the1amy ,Mar 17 '07
Pros: Colorful, entertaining, educational
Cons: Just like any toy, adults can get tired of the music
My two year old loves singing along with the leapfrog fridge phonics magnetic set. What a great product! It keeps him entertained while I'm working in the kitchen and he's learning his ABC's and 123's in the process.

Still singing the songs....
by kidsgalore ,Nov 07 '05
Pros: Magnetic so you don't lose parts as easily.
Cons: On fridge... kids in kitchen... catchy songs... not many cons that we can find!
We love this toy/educational device. We have 2 children, ages 5 and 3, and I babysit a 10 and 12 yr old and they all play with this toy. You'll find yourself singing and dancing along whether you want to or not... Rather embarrassing at work- "A says Ahh and A says Aye..." you get the idea. Has helped my kindergartener with her letter sound recognition and my three yr old can sing the alphabet song like a pro. Even the older kids are learning, they needed help with spelling and this is helping with sounding it out.
