Pros: Educational and with the additional books it makes the learning endless. Cons: Hard to store - books come out easily - mechanical problems.
My daughter didn't quite know what to do with this when I bought it for her second birthday. It is a great computer-like system that you insert a book into the front and a cartridge into the side and your child can learn about all the preschool basics. ...
Pros: An educational and fun LeapPad intended for younger children - excellent learning tool! Cons: Pen cord not long enough, I wish books/plates snapped into place
My husband's sister does not read the age-recommendations on toys before she buys them -- that's how my boy received a LeapFrog My First LeapPad for his first birthday (at least she did manage to get him the "My First" version). Although this toy is ...
Pros: Improves fine motor skills, teaches alphabet, numbers, etc. Kids love it. Cons: Cartridge slot is fragile.
Introduction There a lot of educational toys on the market. Most kids have a habit of rejecting them outright if they are too education-focused. Finding the balance between education and fun is the key and this toy is one of the best! My ...
Pros: Durable, Interactive Fun Cons: Wand Slightly Challenging to Put Away
If you are familiar with my kids and family reviews, it is likely that you realize my adoration for LeapFrog electronic toys. A very special little girl was celebrating her third birthday, so I purchased a Leap Frog My First LeapPad for her. ...
Pros: Very user friendly for the young kids Cons: Not enough books
I bought this for my 3 year old for his birthday and he loves it! Although he seems to forget he needs to touch the green 'go' button on each page, he can still get much learning out of this toy. It teaches numbers, letters, and more depending on the...
Pros: very entertaining, teaches many skills, interchangable books Cons: Books are about 20.00 each
My oldest child received this as a Christmas gift and it is great. Before Christmas, in the store we would always have to stop and play with it. Now we have one at home.
The leap pad comes with one book that has the ABC's and numbers, and...
Pros: Fun games, engaging, many books to choose from based on popular characters, durable books Cons: Books are a bit pricey, no headphone jack
My two year old enjoys this toy a lot. And unlike the regular leap pad, where there have been a few books that were not favorites, all the my first leap pad books have been enjoyed (we have all of them). It took my two-year-old a little while to really ...
Pros: Encourages learning in a fun and interesting manner; great toy for preschoolers. Cons: Requires batteries; kids must remember to press GO with every turn of the page.
While shopping for Christmas gifts in late November with my husband, we decided our 3 1/2 year old son, Tristan, needed some kind of educational toy as he prefers to spend too much of his time either watching movies or playing video games (it's a bit ...
Pros: sturdy, versatile, adjustable volume Cons: school bus doesnt "lock" into place in any way
I had considered buying this for my daughter until I found out it was near the same price as the regular leappad, not as many books were available for it, and was for ages 3 and up. So I decided I would just wait and get the regular leappad in a year or...
Pros: Will hold a child's attention, educational, fun, portable. Cons: books don't lock in place and move around too much
My First LeapPad comes with one book and an alphabet schoolbus. We've had ours for 2 weeks, and there are so many activities and games in just that one book, that each time my daughter picks it up, it's still as fresh of a game as when she first started...
Pros: Lots of great little books with fun characters. Long battery life. Many fun activities. Cons: Durability questionable. Small cartridges easily lost.
Not to sound old (I'm 33), but back in my day, we didn't have no talkin' books. We had us some books with cassettes that gave you a little "BOING... Turn the Page" but that was the extent of the interaction, and that's the way it was and we liked it! ...
Pros: Educational, entertaining, volume control Cons: durability issues
My son got a My First Leap Pad for his 3rd birthday. We have had it for a little more than a year. It has been played with a lot and is now on "leave" until we are able to replace the pointer pen. I like this toy. It comes with an alphabet page and ...
Pros: Easy to use.
Great for car trips. Cons: Difficult for a young child to flip the book over.
We bought a My First Leap Pad for our 2 1/2 year old to use on a long car trip. The box says the Leap Pad is for ages 3 and up, but our child caught on very quickly how to use it. In just a few minutes he mastered turning the pages and placing the ...
Pros: It's a brilliant idea for interactive learning matched to the skills of a toddler. Cons: It is not very durable, goes through a lot of batteries, and no effective troubleshooting.
First let me start by saying that this toy is about the greatest toy every thought up in theory. I have long thought kids would enjoy books more and learn from them more if they could interact with them. I bought this toy new two months ago for my ...
Well for Christmas last year i decided to get my two year old a Leap Frog My First LeapPad and i absolutly hated it. Sad face I know, it was exspensive, it was noisey and he tore the pages of the book. I think the toy makers had great intentions with ...
Great educational toy for younger kids by stephavery ,Dec 13 '03
Pros: Educational, fun, entertaining, small, no little pieces to get lost Cons: Not enough books available, needs a longer pen cord
I bought this for my 3 year old because she likes to play independently. She absolutely loves this. I was hoping this wouldn't be something she'd play with a few times, then put away forever. And she doesn't. The first few times she used it, I had to show her what to do and how to use it. But now, at 38 months old, she can use it totally on her own. The books that go with it are not too expensive either, usually $10-$13. I also like that you can turn the volume up and down on the leappad. It's a great toy to take on long car rides.
A terrific educational toy by efturner ,Aug 31 '04
Pros: A terrific educational toy. Each book will provide hours of fun. Cons: None that I have discovered.
Children need to be convinced that reading is fun. Leap Pad provides an avenue though which success at this level can be achieved.
This toy also facilitates periods of quality "cuddle" time and structured opportunities for the child and parent to play together and develop positive communication strategies.
It's not just a matter of reading a story.
The music, exciting noises and activities which are incorporated within each story makes this a total learning experience par-excellence.
Leap Pad is more than just a book. It is a truly interactive toy for both the child and parent and will provide many hours of enjoyment. Our Leap Pad is carried everywhere. It is invaluable in the car where the distraction it provides makes journeys tolerable. It has proved very durable and is certainly worth every penny we paid for it!
22 Months and Loving the Leap! by wolfe1971 ,Oct 05 '05
Pros: My son loves it and it's educational. Cons: Can't think of one!
We originally bought our 22 month old son the Leap Pad Plus, which is designed for older children. He loved it, however, the pages weren't as sturdy as he is strong. We invested in the Leap Pad Plus and it's just perfect for him. He never really latched onto a toy up until Leap Frog entered our lives! We like to think of it as booting up his hard drive for school.
Pros: It help my 2yr. to read, play games and help him with his letters and colors. Cons: I don't have any problems with my Leap Pad.
I bought this product for my 2yr, His sister has the big Leap Pad Learning System. They both love there Leap Pad. I would recommend this product to everyone.
Leap Frog-need I say more? by lpilling ,Jan 26 '05
Pros: Educational, a great way to spend quality time with my daughter. Cons: none yet
While walking in the toy department at my local Wal*Mart, my daughter spotted the LEAP FROG MY FIRST LEAPPAD. She wanted it because of the color. I wanted it because of the fact she would be learning while she's playing. We paid about $25.00 for Heather's favorite "toy". The pre-reading, pre-writing and the pre-math skills are great. Heather counts right along and doesn't realize she's learning. She loves listening to what the pages tell her what to do. I recommend the MY FIRST LEAPPAD by LEAP FROG.
Far better than them watching TV, and great in the car by psbcycle ,Mar 29 '06
Pros: Easy to use and excellent practice for holding and controlling a pen. Cons: Can't view inside the books before buying.
I bought this for my 3 year old daughter, who's very proud of her computer. She can place matching books and cartridges in the body, and is really learning how to hold and control a pen to select activities, which is something I hadn't considered beforehand. I'd been tempted to buy an older version, but I think this suits her just right, with learning activities rather than being pushy about learning to read and write.
We tend to use it mainly on car journeys, and she pretty much amuses herself. As we can hear it, we can join in also with songs and things, or help. I didn't particularly want yet another play item, so have deliberately chosen books on the alphabet, numbers etc - they all have play activities built-in anyway. She doesn't realize she's learning, which is the nicest way to learn!
Leap Pad stood the test of time (for 2 years) by lizziesmom02 ,Nov 25 '06
Pros: Wonderful learning toy Cons: Mechanical problems after 2 years
We purchased My First Leap Pad for our daughter back in 2004 for her 2nd birthday. At the time, she showed very little interest in it, but my friend's daughter who was 2 months older found it fascinating. 6 months after her birthday, she fell in love with the thing. We use it for long car rides, quiet time during her little brother's nap, and even as a way to keep her on the potty when we were potty training. All in all, we've loved the product, but there have been a couple snags. Even at 4 years old, my daughter has trouble switching the books. Also, we are having some trouble with it accepting some of the cartridges. We get the message, "Oops that's not a My First Leap Pad cartridge" when it most definitely is and some weird noises. Unfortunately, the instructions (which are available on the leap frog website) only have one solution for any problem and that's the change the batteries. Which doesn't solve this problem. I will be calling Leap Frog about this and will update this review at that time.
My 3 year old loves this toy! by indecisivegirl ,Sep 14 '04
Pros: Really does help them learn preschool basics. Can adjust the volume. Cons: Book should be laminated\plastic because we've had it 2mos and its getting worn out.
We got it for him for his 3rd birthday and he really didn't know what to do with it first. After a week or so he had the toy figured out and it has since been the most used toy in the house!
Pros: good learning game (portable) Cons: Definitely the durability
My son got "my first leap pad" for Christmas last year, he really likes it. It has some good games but the durability is not good. I always made sure that he wouldn't carry it by the pen, and not to drop it. But it has been giving us problems it shuts off while he's playing and makes funny sounds (its not the batteries). too bad because he really likes it.
Slightly Entertaining...not for active children by kakamy ,Aug 17 '06
Pros: It is easy to use for a preschooler. Cons: Sound is a little fuzzy.
I bought this for my two year old, now three year old girl. She has never shown much interest. Recently, she has played with it a few times in the car. Some of the game cartridges are better than others. The Leap Frog game books/cartridges are entertaining (Dora and the Wiggles are also good)others are not very entertaining (Thomas the Train and the Princess one). In general, it does not keep a busy child entertained for very long.
Pros: educational, He can do it himself Cons: Batteries, and those yellow cartridges getting lost
I got this for the car rides. I've bought two now cause the first one didn't do good in the car all year round and the second eats batteries worse than first. My son really likes to play the games and learn but the cartridges keep coming up with the error message. which is really annoying on a 10 hour trip between NY and VA. I got this when he was 2 1/2 thinking it would keep him company in the backseat. But after buying several books, we started to lose the yellow cartridge. Four AA batteries don't last long with my now 4 1/2 year old. But he still gets plently of hours of fun on the trip.
great toy but it has problems by camncolesmom ,Jul 12 '06
Pros: great educational toy, easy to use, small enough for travel. Cons: Magic pen "stops" working after about two months.
I really, really like the idea of the Leappad. Both my boys love it as well. However, we are on our second Leap pad and about to return it to the store. On both leappads that we've owned, the magic pen stops working about two months into using it. It happened with the first one, and I thought it was just a fluke and exchanged it for another identical one. Now the second one is doing the same thing. I'm just going to get my money back this time.
Other than that, it's a great learning toy. Leap frog needs to fix the malfunction. I wouldn't buy it again because of that.
Pros: Interesting idea if it had worked. Cons: Volume too low. No volume control.
I bought this for my 3 year old grandson. The volume was so low that it had to be used in a quiet room and demanded close attention to understand what was being said. There is no volume control on the toy.
My grandson could not use it in the car at all, because it couldn't be heard over the noise of the car. I finally gave it to my other two grandchildren ages 2 - 3. They couldn't hear it either and quickly lost interest in it. I believe they just threw it away.
A waste of Money Buy the Regular Leap Pad by pigeontoes ,Jan 15 '05
Pros: Good for infants 1 year and younger who are working on the most basic skills. Cons: No longevity. Beyond ABC's and 123's, it has nothing to offer educationally.
This "My First" Leap Pad would be okay for a 1 year old, but beyond that, the regular Leap Pad would be a better, more long lived choice.
Beyond the most basic of infant school skills, the My First Leap has nothing to offer educationally. With the regular Leap Pad, your child can learn about dinosaurs, the human anatomy, phonics, and arithmetic. With the My First Leap, ABC's and 123's are as broad as it gets.
My child got the regular Leap Pad at 15 months and was able to operate it independently after the 1st week. I would not waste my time with this model.
Pros: Great learning tool. Easy for kids to use. Fun characters Cons: Batteries don't last long.
This is a great way fro kids to learn the basics. My daughters learned colors, shapes, numbers, and letters. It also has alot of their favorit characters so it makes it very fun for them to learn.
