Good for the Novice

by darogers , Apr 21 '06
Pros: Easy to operate, inexpensive, most of the basic features and a few extras
Cons: Poorly written manual, no maps, no altitude profile
While the new GPS units have color and faster acquisition the GPS315 still has it's niche. The GPS 315 is probably one of the least expensive and most readily available units out there (if you're willing to buy one used). There are always units on eBay ...

Great, but out-dated. Time to look at other Magellan GPS Receivers

by east-west , Dec 21 '03
Pros: Noted durability for its time, again repeated in newer models.
Cons: the 315 is Outdated technology. No external antenna, and goes through batteries fast.
The Magellan 315 GPS was the first GPS I owned. I have used it for 6 years. At the time of purchase, it was a midrange unit with accuracy comparable to pricier units. It was one of the first consumer units available that offered an "averaging" feature. ...

Great Introductory GPS Unit

by jps246, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Dec 11 '03
Pros: Inexpensive, Accurate for Most Uses, Tough and Rugged
Cons: May not have all the whiz-bang features that some people want
A great beginner’s GPS unit, the Magellan 315 provides basic GPS functions in an easy to use package that includes over 11,000 pre-programmed locations, the ability to program 500 waypoints, program 20 routes, and has even more functionality when ...

Very Very Very Good

by Slipknot , Nov 10 '00
Pros: EVERYTHING
Cons: NONE
I have owned this Global Positioning System Device for about 1 year now, and I have seen that it is just about the best Global Positioning System out there. I use it on a Twenty-One and a half foot Sea Ray. It says that it is waterproof, and it...

The 315 has performed as expected and has satisfied the features as advertised. I have found the 315 is a great entry level GPS that has proved useful for farm planning and site analysis mapping as well as trip/trek plotting. I would recommend the 315 to other users looking for a similar product.

first used it overseas in Kosovo/Macedonia. Really easy to use, just keep spare batteries handy. Another plus would to have an external antenna connection, But for the money it did the job.

The GPS 315 is a...
by *don*_dt3000 ,Mar 25 '02
The GPS 315 is a great little unit for those who want a GPS receiver but do not require all the bells and whistles now available in other units. The unit is a little bulky, but still fits in a large pocket. The menu based setup and operations screens allow you to use the unit without referring to the instructions, a plus for those with a short attention span or a need to be operational within fifteen minutes of purchase (true for me in both cases). I used the unit recently overseas with great success - the worldwide database truly is worldwide. The only complaints I have with the unit is the lack of an external antenna connection. Drivers: don't panic on this, it works well in a dash bracket on the highways. As spring brings more overhead foliage, we'll see just how well the 315 works on the back roads. For the price, you can't beat the 315.
