Magellan Triton 500 Handheld GPS Receiver

Pros: Interface is nice and the unit is light and compact.
Cons: Very incompatible with my PC (Windows XP Pro) and downloading maps is a chore.

First I bought the 300 model but had so many problems linking it to my XP desktop, that I upgraded to the 500. The interface is great but the unit itself is a waste. When I fire up the system, it shows me that I'm in San Dimas, CA. Well, I live in Bend, ...

Pros: Small and made of plastic and will keep papers from moving on your desk.
Cons: Terrible technical support and service, lousy product, can't perform basic GPS functions. Don't buy Magellan!

Magellen has the worst technical support and customer servie deptment in the USA. This Triton 500 is of very poor quality and features will not work and they can't fix the problem. The track feature will not work poperly if at all and they can't fix. The unit will not record your tracks, convert your tracks, store your tracks as routes, will not save tracks if your battery runs out, will not save your tracks if you shut off your unit and will not record tracks for other reasons. If you want to be totally frustrated, buy this piece of crap. This unit should win the Piece of Crap award. Magellan had to put alot of effort into making a product this lousy. I can't stress enough to run from this and all Magellan products. The level of support I have experienced trying to get this unit repaired would try the patience of Jobe. I could go on but I really get even more irritated just thinking about the money I have wasted. Run Forrest Run from Magellan.

I have owned 4 different GPS units in my life and this is the Gold metal winner for the Piece of Crap award. Don't waste your money, look to Garmin or another brand. Not only is the unit of poor quality and even worse performance, the technical support is ever worse (and that takes some doing). I have had this unit for almost 4 months and it makes a good paper weight but very poor GPS. The track feature doesn't work at all and Magellan can't fix the problems.

Pros: Really do not have anything good to say
Cons: Just say NO. Return if you can.

This is my 2nd handheld GPS and I am wondering why I didn't check the reviews first. My last GPS was a Garmin eTrex that I purchased 8 years ago. The Garmin held up well but was limited on features. The Magellan 500 cost twice as much as the Garmin eTrex and out of the box it doesn't offer anything better. The preloaded map was a joke,it does not even show major lakes. I tried downloading upgrades, but had nothing but problems. XP wouldn't recognize the GPS, Magellan software would crash every time I open it and Tech support was a joke. Plus the screen is harder to read in sunlight than the cheaper and older Garmin eTrex was. I return this unit to Costco today and plan to purchase another Garmin.

Triton 500 value pack didn't work out of the box, Fatal Application Errors. Been back to distributor and "fixed". Do not believe anyone if they tell you a software revision will resolve the issues. I am appalled by the fragile nature of the software, do not take this bush as your only means of navigation (not that you should anyway!) Mate has a 2000, same problems!

Pros: Didn't get the chance to find any
Cons: Stopped working immediately

Got this as a present for the wife. Followed all the instructions out of the box but it crashed while attached to my computer. Now won't function at all. Will be exchanging it tomorrow for a Garmin.
