Marmot PreCip: Defying the rules/elements.

by theuerkorn Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Jan 22 '07
Pros: Very light, packs very small, basic water / good wind protection, fairly fashionable, breathable
Cons: not completely water-proof (zippers), limited storage, no integrated liner available (no insulation)
Marmot is a charismatic family of sciurid rodents of which the most famous even got its own US holiday "Groundhog Day". Despite their fur playing some role in human accessories, the marmot skin this review is all about doesn't harm any animal -- at least ...

A truly functional and packable 3-season shell jacket

by dgeesaman , Jul 08 '02
Pros: Affordable, lightweight, waterproof, breathable.
Cons: Earlist versions (smooth white) of Precip lining is prone to delamination
I bought this jacket recently to fill a void in my backpacking gear - a waterproof / breathable jacket that didn't weigh a ton like my winter shell. Weighing in at just over a pound, this jacket is no rock. For one pound you get this: - Well shaped, ...

A good shell for light weather

by natemes , Apr 23 '02
Pros: very lightweight, marmot quality, waterproof
Cons: potentially delicate fabric, a few pocket problems
The Precip jacket from Marmot is an extremely lightweight rain jacket (aprox 12 oz.). Made from thin, light nylon, the jacket is treated to make it waterproof and breathable. To my experience it has been weathertight and comfortable. For full...

Pros: Very lightweight Looks cool Keeps you warm and dry in heavy rain
Cons: None apparent
I'm an active scouter (that's an adult volunteer) with the Boy Scouts and just attended Scoutmaster Outdoor Leader Training - there was a backpacking training session by a fellow who has been to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico 11 times. He has a...

Great back packing jacket

by gator5551 , Oct 31 '02
Pros: Very light and durable with a great price
Cons: don't know any
Great Jacket for back packing! I used to use the north face mountain light jacket in the winter, and its a great jacket too, but for the lower elevations of the piedmont of north carolina the north face is a bit of an over kill as the weight of it will...

Breathable ??? (From a runners view)

by wendysgreg , Sep 19 '07
Pros: Lightweight and packable.
Cons: Lacks breathability
Runners considering this jacket might want to think twice or try a friends if possible. I feel it's lacking in breathability myself, a very important factor to me . I bought this jacket because I just got into ultras and wanted a ...

Fabulous Jacket

by mrincognito11 , Jan 22 '04
Pros: weight, packability, waterproof, quite breathable, not expensive
Cons: no hand pockets
Ounce for ounce (and dollar for dollar) the best rain shell on the market. Great packability, feather-light weight. The Precip coating is quite breathable (I believe Marmot claims it is within 5% of traditional Gore-Tex). I've used it backpacking and ...

The Precip Jacket Wacky Sizing

by naglerlover , Jan 01 '05
Pros: Nice looking with cool colors, especially the Electric Blue for men.
Cons: Marmot assigned some really strange sizing to these garments. Needs more pockets on the inside.
My wife and I each got one of these jackets very recently after reading the glowing reviews on this site and listening to the salesperson at the outfitter's where we purchased the jackets. We have not had the garments long enough to say whether they are ...

Marmot pre-cip
by dirthead ,Apr 21 '07
Pros: low cost, weight
Cons: weak breathability, features, durability
I have read the other reviews and have a varied opinion. My expierience has been mixed, the jacket works well in light to moderate rain, but the breathability is weak , more like a shower curtain, if you do anything other than easy walking, it gets humid, otherwise for 99 bucks what do you expect, limited features and durability, my gore-tex shells are far superior, heavier, but peace of mind they work better and are durable, i would not buy another one.

good for the money
by regomatic ,Oct 06 '07
Pros: light, good vents, keeps you dry.
Cons: not as durable, delaminates, breathable? really?
I agree welliott. I got this jacket for the rainy season in SF bay area, maybe like 4-5 years ago. At first it's a awesome jacket, when I was just walking around, I was always totally dry. But I notice when biking, it started feeling clammy inside, the vents help but the jacket doesn't seem that breathable. I also use it when I ride my motorcycle in the rain, sometime heavy rain. I average around 60 mph in the rain for about 45 mins coming home, and this jacket keeps me dry except for the front zipper. However, when you are doing 60 mph, water is coming at you side ways do I don't blame the jacket at all. I used it snowshoeing in tahoe as an outer shell and it worked without any problem.

I still use the jacket, it's been a few years and i notice the lamination is thinning in some spots and it tends to let water slowly seeps in, feels like a damp towel touching your skin.

Overall, I think it was worth the price.

You can do better than PreCip.
by welliott ,May 06 '05
Pros: Light, compressable-- but not notably so.
Cons: Membrane will delaminate, doesn't breathe well.
PreCip is light-years ahead of what Muir, Mallory, Shackleton and other heroes had to work with. But in terms of today's market, PreCip is definitey on the low to medium end of performance. Instead of buying one at REI for $90, shop around for something better. At REI garage sales (weekend events where they liquidate returned gear) or at discount resellers like www.sierratradingpost.com, you can find highest-end eVent and Gore-Tex jackets for 50 to 70 % off retail prices.

I've put enough use into my PreCip jacket to know it may be inexpensive and light, but it also disposable. The nearest REI outlet sells back 10 - 15 returned PreCip jackets and pants every time they liquidate returned gear, and the reason for return is always the same. After a few seasons of use, the PreCip membrane delaminates from the nylon shell. It peels away in pieces.

I do not recommend this jacket to anyone other than day hikers who need to pull something out of their fanny pack to ward off a sudden shower, and who don't care about getting the best value for their money.

Sweet jacket!
by cross2767 ,Oct 28 '03
Pros: I'm dry!
Cons: None
I'm a bike messenger for a very busy courier service in my local city, and our company rain gear is this jacket. Let me tell you that this jacket is a blessing to couriers like myself. Being outside in the elements on a daily basis is a true testament to how great this jacket is, and after this past season where the Mid Atlantic area had the most rain it's seen in many years, I'm a firm believer. When the wind kicks up between buildings, I simply tighten the straps and I'm dry as a bone, except for my face. The best part about this jacket is the way that the water beads up and you can just shake it off. Talk about a great feature for someone that is outside in the pouring rain for 5 to 10 minutes, then has to go inside and deliver legal documents! No matter what the reason, get one, they are worth the money!
