Being Death's apprentice ain't all it's cracked up to be

by hist hist is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, , Jul 12 '02
Pros: Wonderful characters, great jokes and funny situations
Cons: A weak ending
Mort, the 4th Discworld book by Terry Pratchett, is one of the funniest Discworld books out there. It's a hilarious book that's missing some of the social commentary that permeates his books later in the series. You don't miss it, though, as you...

DEATH comes......a-hiring

by sandemp , Aug 05 '05
Pros: Good characters | Stronger Story | Very Readable | Many Layers |
Cons: Not as funny as some of the books
A giant turtle slowly makes it's way across the vast emptiness that is space, and on it's meteor pocked shell stand four over-sized elephants, on whose backs rests the flat, circular, and highly magical Discworld. Discworld is world of heroes, heroines, ...

Will this hook you on Discworld?

by utini , Jul 14 '04
Pros: Amusing, fast paced, clever dialouge
Cons: Weak ending, slightly immature style
Mort, a gangly, awkward youth made almost completely of knees, is struggling to find a trade. So when Death approaches him, and after assurances that being dead isn’t compulsory to the role, Mort agrees to become Death’s apprentice. Unfortunately ...

Don't Fear the Reaper

by ALawston , Nov 26 '00
Pros: Hilarious, with sympathetic characters and bold concepts
Cons: Might be a little crazy if you've never read Pratchett

Mort is the fourth novel in the Discworld series. For those that don't know, the Discworld novels concern events on a flat world carried through space on the back of four elephants. These elephants are standing on the turtle, Great A'Tuin.

Working for Death

by captaind captaind is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Books, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Jan 21 '03
Pros: Hilarious, fantastic, wonderful
Cons: Absolutely none
Mort is a young lad looking for an apprenticeship. Little does he know he was to end up being Death's apprentice.

A short description of Discworld for those new to the series: The basic idea is that Discworld is a flat planet supported...

His name is so appropriate!

by digitaldevil , Jul 12 '02
Pros: Death (the person) can be humorous, writing style
Cons: Not long enough, ending was a bit flat
Do you like Douglas Adams? How about Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos novels? Then you will love Mort.

What do you do when your father wants you to become an apprentice, but you're all knees and elbows? You become the apprentice of...

Death takes a holiday - literally

by Vormancian Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Mar 28 '01
Pros: Terry Pratchett wrote it. Devilish humor.
Cons: Some might not like the tongue-in-cheek style of the series.
It's hard to review a specific Discworld book. If you like any Discworld book you'll like this one, and if you don't like or don't know the series then its a long explanation.

The series, in general, is along the lines of a Douglas Adams...

Death...with a sense of humor

by jeujubes , Sep 16 '07
Pros: Darkly humorous, great characters
Cons: None
I received this book from someone who was going to throw it away. I figured it was as bad as they said, but I read it anyway, and began wondering why anyone would trash this book. Terry Pratchett has a way of writing that reminds me of Piers Anthony or ...

Death ponders a career change...

by LiquidSnake , Jan 29 '02
Pros: It features Death and Albert! It's Terry Pratchett
Cons: You might feel compelled(like myself) to read the whole series

I have skipped through the Discworld series for the past several years: reading every new title, and picking up the older ones at used bookstores and libraries. The last one I have finished is Mort, and gives me faith that...

A great title for the fantasy lovers

by erani , Dec 23 '99
Pros: Funny, original and riveting.
Cons: Had a hard time figuring out Australian slang at first.
When I first got the book, I was very excited because of its great cover, and soon I realized I was right. Terry Pratchett's flowing style captured me for hours, in which I was following the plot carefully - I didn't want to miss any of it.

The best

by khunkwai , Mar 25 '00
Pros: Hilarious
Cons: Hmmm....none
Mort was the first Prachett book I read, must have been some 12 years ago I guess, and it had me totally cracked up all the way through, a master piece of comic fantasy writing his books do for Fantasy what Hitchhikers Guide did for Sci Fi but without...

Mort

by CraigNick , Mar 12 '00
Pros: Pratchett is very funny.
Cons: Older books hard to find.
Mort was the first book that I had ever read by Terry Pratchett. It is about a common (or not so common) farm boy. When he is brought to an aprentice convention Death shows up and offers a position to Mort. The position is to be "Death" while...

by mojayokok , Oct 08 '05
Pros: wacky erudite fun.
Cons: none.
I don't care whether your a garbage man or a CEO (or a really messy CEO who happens to constantly be picking up trash) one of the most difficult problems in life is finding the place were you can feel you belong. Pratchet, in the few of his books I've ...

Well Written Shorter story
by pattermj ,Mar 06 '07
Pros: Good characters Well conceived world part of a series
Cons: Short Lower level read
Follows the time of a boy named Mort who needs to find an apprenticeship and gets stuck with Death. And Death is feeling somewhat lazy and wanting to explore what life is really about. Pretty much the story of how Mort screws up and how he has to fix it. Well written, somewhat short. Good young adult fantasy novel with some well written jokes and irony thrown in like normal
