  • Mosquito Magnet Defender

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jun 1, 2005
Pros: It worked for one summer.
Cons: Continued expense to operate. One acre kills more mosquitoes. Worked only one summer.

Summary: UPDATE After using this for one year, the unit would work and not work, work and not work. It was like that the entire summer. We spent a fortune on the cartridges to clear the machine. When my husband would hit the propane regulator ... read more

  • LOOKOUT!! Here's a serious problem with Defender.

Pros: Although expensive to operate, when/if it works, it works well.
Cons: My Defender didn't last over two months. VERY upsetting. Very annoying customer service supervisor.

Summary: After the 2nd tank of propane, my new unit would not stay running. Now I am told that the "combustion engine" could possibly have failed from "sediment" if the propane tank ran out. There are NO PRODUCT WARNINGS regarding this. Although all product ... read more

Cons: ALERT - COST TO REPAIR THE DEFENDER MAY EXCEED THE COST OF A NEW ONE!

Summary: ALERT - COST TO REPAIR THE DEFENDER MAY EXCEED THE COST OF A NEW ONE! Up until this year, I was happy...AND THEN, IT STOPPED WORKING... I purchased the Defender 2 years ago and paid $279.00 brand new for it. I have been pretty happy with how it worked ... read more

  • Took a little while, but that was operator error...

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    May 14, 2007
Pros: Passive collection. Really captures a lot of mosquitoes. Small dent in the noseum population.
Cons: Expense. Having to flush the lines between every 2-3 refills.

Summary: I used the included octenol attractant, and was only getting about 15 mosquitoes per tank of propane (20-30 days). We had a "cold" front come through, so I figured the mosquitoes just were not yet in force. After three tanks, I started getting a ... read more

  • Defender Money Pit

Rated a Somewhat Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Feb 24, 2007
Pros: Definitely attracts and kills mosquitoes.
Cons: Very costly to operate and repair and does not hold up in an outdoor environment.

Summary: After less than two full years of operation the mosquito magnet defender had to be shipped to a repair shop at the tune of over $200.00 --- yes, that's more than they cost! American Biophysics Corporation who manufactures the Mosquito Magnet has possibly ... read more

  • Defender works EXCEPTIONALLY well

    Aug 21, 2006
    Pros: Works as advertised
    Cons: None

Summary: We have 5 acres - elevation ranges from 23 ft to 42 ft above sea level - with ideal mosquito breeding grounds (lots of stagnant water, shade and tall grasses). Day and night the mosquitos here are horrendous; even if we only go outdoors to feed the ... read more

    Pros: Effectively keeps mosquitoes away
Cons: Expensive solution, have to refill propane tank and bait on regular basis ($$)

Summary: I bought the Defender last summer. Here I am a year later and I wouldn't give up my Mosquito Magnet for anything! I live in Atlanta, GA where Asian Tiger Mosquitoes rule. I couldn't step outside without getting swarmed by mosquitoes so I decided to give ... read more

  • Preschool Defender

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Aug 14, 2006
    Pros: It really works.
Cons: Not any real "cons" I can find.

Summary: I purchased a Defender to donate to my son's preschool this year because he was coming home with 3-4 nasty mosquito bites a day. Me being somewhat paranoid but at the same time smartly defensive of my son and the other wonderful children at preschool ... read more

  • Mosquito magnet defender 4000MM works!

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Aug 13, 2006
Pros: easy to use and quiet
Cons: The additives are an ongoing expense..but worth it.

Summary: The Mosquito Magnet is a device that is a must for mosquito infested areas. It's quite a bit more than having a cintronella candle burning! The unit model 4000MM covers about 1/2 acre, which is perfect for most homes. The operation cost basically ... read more

  • Works Great when you follow the instructions

Pros: More enjoyable evenings on the deck
Cons: We now stay up to late at night enjoying the evening outside.

Summary: I had one given to me as a gift and was skeptical about how this thing would take care of killing mosquito's. I live in Canada and the mosquito's here can be pretty bad. In previous years in the evening we could not sit out on the back deck after 7pm and ... read more

  • Great Product - Highly Recommend!

    Jul 13, 2006
Pros: Bite-free summer - do I need to say anything else?!
Cons: Certain level of maintainance, but it's well worth it.

Summary: I have friends who have purchased other "mosquito control" contraptions for less money, only to find out that these machines really don't do the job the way the Mosquito Magnet does. Although Mosquito Magnets may require more upkeep than folks might be ... read more

  • High Price to Pay to Remove a Common Pest.

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 2, 2006
Pros: It's another gadget. Gives me something to spend money on.
Cons: Price. Hasn't lived up to the billing yet.

Summary: I initially picked up the Rush Hampton Mosquito Catcher. It was $150 and claimed to use blue light to attract the mosquitos (not propane). I quickly came to the realization that if it's only using light to attract them, it's not doing any good in the ... read more

Pros: Finally is catching mosquitos with Lurex
Cons: Expensive to purchase and maintain, and a lot of work

Summary: We bought a Mosquito Magnet Defender and set it up 3 weeks ago, shortly after our mosquito season had begun in full force. We didn't catch a single mosquito. After a few days we thought we saw maybe one mosquito in the catch bag. We repositioned the ... read more

    Cons: Just about everything else.

Summary: I live in NC, and purchased the Defender to deal with the airborne attackers in my wooded lot. After bringing it home and setting it up, the instruction manual mentioned the need to use "quick clear" cartridges, which were not included and not available ... read more

    Jun 14, 2006
Pros: drives away or captures mosquitoes & black flies
    Cons: expensive to operate

Summary: Two things New Hampshire is known for are black flies and mosquitoes. Some have even suggested the mosquito should be the state bird. They make them pretty big up here. We talked before we moved about getting a Mosquito Magnet but for a long ... read more

  • Very Unreliable--It almost never runs

Rated a Somewhat Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Sep 3, 2005
Pros: Catches lots of mosquitos when its running.
Cons: Very unreliable requires expensive consumables eventually stops working altogether.

Summary: Well I should say that it does catch a lot of mosquitos when its running. The problem is that it is almost never running so it essentially is a very expensive lawn sculpture. I bought this in midyear of last year and managed to keep it going with a lot ... read more

  • So far so good......

    Pros: Effective so far.
Cons: You need to be diligent to keep it running full-time.

Summary: I purchased two Mosquito Magnet Defenders last fall (saving $150 dollars since they go on sale at the end of the season). I got one up and running as soon as possible (late April/early May), and though the mosquitoes hadn't come out yet it did a good ... read more

Pros: Gets rid of all that excess propane in the tank
Cons: IT DOES NOT WORK !

Summary: I would probably do better to pay a neighbor kid to stand in my yard and smash mosquitoes as they bite him. It would be just as effective and cost about the same as well. A week after I bought the thing I read an article in Reader's Digest about ... read more

Pros: None that I can think of.
Cons: Doesn't work. The performance of the machine is not backed up by the company.
