After having lived in the Metropolitan DC Area for over 33 years, I am very familiar with Mosquitos and getting bit throughout the summer. This summer, I decided I was going to take back by backyard and my swimming pool so after reviewing the variety of ...
Pros: Continues to catch at an amazing rate Cons: Restarting design flaw. Read review for details and a workaround.
We've had the unit for about 3 months now. It continues to catch at an amazing rate. Our yard is pretty much biting bug free (except for the mayflies, but it doesn't catch those). Every time I empty the bag (usually after the 3 weeks), the bag is ...
Pros: Showed some promise occasionally. Cons: Too finicky a unit. One good self-respecting barn swallow would kill more mosquitoes.
The shame here is that I think these things could work with some more attention by the company. The machines are just too finicky, and combined with poor customer service, I have to recommend against. I am going on my 3rd season with both a "liberty" ...
Pros: Nice web site, and good marketing material. Cons: A terrible product that works only one season if that long!
Bought this in summer of 05. The first summer it at least seemed to work, although never caught too many mosquitoes. I thought that was mostly due to the fact that I had other systems around the yard for catching the mosquitoes. The second summer it ...
Pros: killed a couple of bugs the first year Cons: $$$, lousy service, $$$, lousy service, $$$, lousy service
Living a wood area on a lake in the Northeast we believe the Mosquito Magnet would be the answer to our 'buggy' problem. Little did we know that our problems would not be the bugs, or perhaps the problems were the 'bugs'. We purchased our unit ...
Pros: When it works it catches horse flys too. Cons: Cost, operation, cost, maintenance, cost, start-up, cost, extremely fussy piece of crap
I bought the Libert Plus brand new from Home Depot. It ran fairly well for three months and it was put away in storage for the winter. When it ran it caught mosquitos and horse flys. I followed the routine maintenance steps and kept the unit in prestine ...
Mosquito Magnet is worthless and an expensive sham by bristolmartin ,Aug 29 '05
Pros: Miserable product;fails to perform. Cons: This product is expensive, unreliable, irreparable and has a brief and useless life.
This product fails in the blink of an eye, cannot be repaired and American Biophysics offers NO service. They are developing their product as they go along and hope we fools will continue to buy expensive upgrades as a hopeful route to a product that will work reliably. I fell for this fraud twice and after talking to friends who have trashed theirs in anger and frustration, must do the same. DO NOT FALL for this ploy;the units last a season or less! For me, this was about a $1500 loss.
Works for me (when it works) by warralex ,May 11 '04
Pros: Works when its on. Cons: Hard to restart!
I live in maine and we have thousands of things that bite!
Picked up the liberty at Home Depot for the usual $500. It started working very well right away, within the 3 weeks quoted, we were able to go outside and enjoy our deck again. It did not get rid of ALL the pests, but at least it knocked them back to the point that they did not try to carry me away every time I stepped out the door.
At the end of the season I had emptied the net about 4 times, and it had caught enough bugs to fill a 2 quart bottle! Dehydrated! Did not try to count.
Now for the bad, I have yet to get it running this year! Picked up some of the co2 cylnders today and will try to clean it tonight.
Overall I would say it did exactly as it stated.
***UPDATE*** I did the cleaning and put on a not so full tank from my grill, it fired right up and started doing its job.
Mosquito Magnet - good idea - incredibly bad delivery by pondoo11 ,May 22 '05
Pros: I do think the basic idea of using a CO2 plume is a good one. Cons: Problems with the mechanical design and lousy customer service .
Purchased a unit for $800 in 2001. Never caught many mosquitoes (attractant did not work for Tiger mosquitoes in Texas, though the company did not mention that at the time) Unit "worked" one season. Next season would not start - company replaced the powerpack with one that had a CO2 cleanout device. It started for awhile but didn't work for the entire summer. Would not start up at all the next season - our original dealer diagnosed the problem as a fan that would not run and told us the company would not allow him to repair the unit. We complained, to no avail. The next year, it would not start. We are still complaining, to no avail. The company will still not allow simple repairs (at least for our particular Liberty unit, which they no longer make - only purchasing new units/powerpacks for $475-$625. Truly lousy customer service on products that obviously have design flaws.
Pros: Easy to use, Read instructions! helpful, about clog ups and specie types Cons: Cord, consumption of propane! Worth the price.. considering the results, need restart after electrical storm
We live in Georgia & purchased the "Liberty" in April, it is now July '04. We thought it would catch more in the "trap", but we cannot complain by no means. Our back yard is woods and a river runs through. We can now enjoy the deck without the buzz or the bite.
Not worth it for Central Texas by xjetjock ,Jul 06 '04
Pros: Easy Assembly & Instructions Cons: Didn't catch any mosquitoes
The first thing I noticed in the literature is that the Octenol "attractant" is not recommended if the Asian Tiger Mosquito is the primary mosquito in the area, and in fact it will repel them. This type of mosquito is predominate here in central (and south) Texas. I ran the unit for five days straight, day and night, on my back deck and didn't catch a single mosquito. Just 3 gnats, and a spider that was making webs. After all of the recent rains, there are plenty of (Asian Tiger) mosquitoes around, and I have the bites to prove it. I'll be returning it before it gets any wear and tear.
Pros: Can kill mosquitos at about 50 cents each Cons: Amazingly poor service for a product this expensive
Similar to other reviewers the unit (a commercial pro) ran well the first year and even ran ok the next year (but seemed less effective). Year 3 found me unable to start the unit and I gave up. Year four found me in contact with customer service were I was informed they do NOT OFFER repairs on the unit but could sell me a REFURBISHED unit for about 600. I was amazed that they could refurbish but not repair. Anyway I beat the tar out of the thing and low and behold it started to work! - for 3 weeks! I am now dead in the water. Next week I will disassemble the thing since I have nothing to lose and see what I can see.
Pros: Boat Anchor Cons: It will make you sick because of how much time and money you wasted.
I paid $795 for a Mosquito Magnet 2 1/2 years ago. The unit has never worked properly even after replacement. My neighbor has the same model with identical problems. The warranty is too short. Look at other reviews by real owners! They really have bad customer service and they do try to get you to upgrade when yours is broken and out of warranty. My unit has never lasted a season and it has been replaced 2x. Now I'm stuck with a boat anchor. Don't waste your money!
Do Not Buy This Product by tomopinions ,Jul 27 '04
Pros: The unit did work for one season. Cons: The unit failed to operate in the second season of use.
I purchased the Mosquito Magnet Commercial Pro unit last summer. The unit worked well for one season and started right up this season. Following the first shut down to change propane tanks the unit refused to start. I e-mailed the company and they promised to send a new CO2 clear valve as the old design leaked. Following several more e-mails and phone calls over almost two months I received the valve. Needless to say it did not help and the unit will not start. I was told that I could have the unit repaired for $375!! OR I could purchase a new unit for $900!! The nerve of this company is incredible and I do not believe I have ever experienced worse customer service. What a racket they have going - produce an inferior quality product with no real service outlets knowing that people will require to have the units repaired, and then charge an outrageous price for the repair itself.
Pros: Caught lots of mosquitoes in its short lifespan Cons: Reliability
We've struck out on three Liberty Plus'. The first worked for 2 weeks, caught a bunch of mosquitoes, then died. I spent hours on hold with MM, tried numerous troubleshooting, ran around looking for a CO2 cartridge to "clean it" then called Frontgate and ordered a second. That one worked for a week, and then stopped working. Plugged in the third today, and it worked for 5 minutes, then stopped. I'm awaiting a response back from MM now, but I have to question the reliability of these, after three died. I have heard the same from a neighbor, but also heard that these work from a coworker.
