Pros: wide angle, close focussing distance, high optical quality Cons: a lot of pitfalls
A wide-angle lens, with its special characteristics, can capture stunning images of people, landscape and stilllife. These characteristics are unique to wide-angle lenses and the techniques applied can be mastered over a period of time. The combination...
An excellent lens for scenery with little distortion and very sharp images.
Used to rely on a 21mm f2.0 lens as my wideangle of choice with previous system (Olympus), but when I made the switch to Nikon, chose the 24. Have not missed the extra...
Pros: Solidly built, sharp and contrasty Cons: None that I can think of!
This is a terrific lens. Nikon employs close range correction (CRC) on this lens to keep the image sharp when focusing on subjects very near to the camera. Close Range Correction is a system that Nikon employs with some of its lenses to keep resolution...
Pros: tack sharp, contrasty- excellent for landscapes Cons: need step-up ring and larger filters to avoid vignetting
If you're looking for a general use wide angle lens for nikon, this is the one. fast enough (f2.8) for low light, wide enough for landscapes and architecture, but not too wide for general use as well.
Pros: Great sharpness, fast glass, good price, small and light Cons: An old design that still falls short of the best zooms
This little lens is not too expensive and is sharper than the 20mm 2.8 that costs 175 dollars more. If you can do without the wider angle, the 24mm works better on digital bodies such as the D200 and D80. It's an AF-D lens and will auto focus on all DSLRs except for the crippled D40 series models. Distortion is well controlled an close focus is excellent.
Contrast and sharpness are quite good wide open and improved towards a sweet spot at around F/4. But this is a solid little lens even wide open. Focus is quick and snappy.
The lens ships without a lens hood, so pick one up for protection and glare.
This lens joins the 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 as one of the best values in the Nikon prime lineup. Sadly, the 20mm that I also tested fell a bit short. Word is that the 20mm works better on film bodies.
The only thing wrong with this lens is that everyone wants a 24mm (and other primes) that are updated and faster glass.

Pros: Color, sharpness, contrast, build quality, size Cons: Flare if a strong light enters the picture
I bought mine last year, used, from a woman who bought it on Japan in the early 80's and seems to have hardly used it. It's NEW. But that's not what makes it such a nice lens.
Color, sharpness, contrast, build quality, size, weight (I prefer "solid" ones to balance with my F2 bodies and my F3) are excellent. The only complain is flare if a strong light enters the picture. Apart this, it's a very nice lens that you'll forget it's there. I mean you'll just focus, compose, meter and shoot, well, anyway, use it. It's that easy.
For samples on what I've been doing with it, please that a look at:
Pros: Optically superior to the 28, dramatic perspective encourages shots of everyday things. Cons: relatively expensive (500CAD vs. 385CAD for the 28)
I bought this lens after debating for a few months on whether I was happy with my 28mm af-d. The day I traded in the 28 and picked up the 24 (500CAD) I felt guilty, having succumbed to internet chatter and bought the lens that the masses considered to be great. It turns out the masses are right. I'm relatively new to photography and usually refrain from commenting on sharpness and saturation since I've only used a handful of lenses, but this one is noticeably superior in the sharpness and color department than the 28. An advantage that I wasn't expecting was the dramatic perspective that a 24 provides. I have found myself taking shots of things that I wouldn't have considered before based on how cool the perspective through the viewfinder renders the image. This is a good thing -- and for the first time I'm comfortable saying that this is the lens that stays on the camera by default.
