Pros: Excellent optical quality, true 1:1 reproduction, large manual focus ring, light weight. Cons: Aperture ring is very imprecise, focus ring is over-dampened.
In search of a good normal macro lens for my N

FM3A, I did a lot of research online, talked to several professional photographers, and found that two lenses were consistently mentioned: the Nikon 55mm 2.8 ...
Pros: Superbly performing macro at an affordable price Cons: Objects in viewfinder may be closer than they appear!
Nikon is famous for countless superlatives in its contribution to the development of 35mm SLR photography. Among them are its legendary macro lenses near the 50mm or "normal" focal length. These lenses, dubbed Micro Nikkors, have been a reason...
Pros: Excellent value, construction and optical performance. Cons: slight "slop" in the focus ring
Macro work is one of those things that most photographers would like to try. There are many ways to achieve the closer focus necessary for macro work...from extension tubes to bellows and even reversing rings. The best method for the beginner who wants ...
Pros: Superb image quality. Goes to 1:1 unaided. Superb build. Cons: Bulky and fairly heavy. Not the fastest auto-focus performance.
The Nikon 60mm F2.8 AFD micro lens is a standard prime (i.e. ~50mm focal length) with the ability to focus to life size (1:1) where the size of the image on film matches the size of the subject. Mechanics The lens has traditional aperture ring ...
Don't bother with a "normal" lens by uniquebobc ,Nov 30 '04
Pros: Very light; exceptionally detailed photos. Cons: Is the 62 mm filter size unusual?
I bought this reasonably priced lens for close-up work. The detail in close-ups is outstanding! But what is special about this lens is that it can be used for general photography--I have used it for scenics with crystal-clear results, no matter what f-stop was used. It also has manual focus and f-stop settings--a definite plus for exacting close-up work.
Used and still a top performer by dgh23train ,Jun 08 '04
Pros: Excellent resolution Cons: Why can't all lenses perform this well
I bought my used and it is by far my top quality lens in my bag. The very first shots I took were close ups of a tea bag and ear plug and the rendition was astonishing. You could see the cross hatching in the tea bag cover. Everyone in Photo class was impressed as well.
I have set up resolution tests with the EIA1956 test resolution pattern, and of my lenses, this one was far and aware the best in terms of resolution. I saw little loss even at 400 percent.
I have not tried all scenarios to test for edge, near, far, etc. But I can say, this lens performs excellent at close up and normal portrait ranges.
